The beginning of the end for Lavin?

I just read thru this thread and I must admit I never thought our fans were this fickle. I feel terrible that 3 of our recruits did not qualify but that is the way the ball bounces sometimes. I cannot believe the cynical anti-Lavin talk. The man took over a program that was bleeding and going nowhere...we became irrelevant as a program. A classy guy gets hired to take us back out of the dungeon and we actually have guys talking his demise. I think this is the worst thread I have ever read on this site.I wish there was a way to get rid of it, all of it. This needs to be washed away. Coach Lavin in the event you read us and I am sure you do, I just want to say I am sorry for the nonsense.

Lavin is a big boy making a lot of money if he cant take some harsh words then he shouldnt be here.

tux. no one in the B.E. is feeling sorry for us. The kids can do either of 2 things, feel sorry for themseklves that they lost 3 top100 players for the first semester or everyone including the walkons all step it up.

Hey sometimes s* happens, but are you man enough to get through it. MAN UP.
That`s basically what it comes down to

This absolutely sucks, there's no sugarcoating it. Now we have a season with 6 guards and a Juco center. Will this nightmare ever end. We cant deal with any injuries or fouls. Another $600 down the drain.

I went back and forth on this. Sarcasm or not. If it is ignore the rest of this. If it isn't sarcasm, then don't pay your 600, so I can move up and get better seats.

First of all, I never called for Steve Lavin to resign/be fired. I wouldn't want someone to say that about me at my job, so I wouldn't say that about someone else. Nor do I think he should be, after the tremendous job he did last year.

I also didn't mean to imply that he was resigning/getting fired in the immediate future, no way. That was speculation as to weather or not the calls for this would be coming, if eligibility continued to be a problem in the near future (which we don't know if it will be). We all love to live in the here and now, but good programs always think about the future, 2 or 3 years down the line. As fans, we don't really have to do that, but I just like to try and think along with the program as best I can.

I can understand why my original post(s) was taken the way it was. I can't guarentee that I won't post my wild/off-the-wall thoughts on this site again. However, when I do, I'll say it is such in either the subject line, or the first part of my post, so if you don't want to read it, you don't have to.

I apologize if anyone took offense. I'm not on here to antagonize, I just want to discuss the team we love with the best fans in the world. Do I regret a couple of lines that I had in my original post? Of course, but there's no going back on that now.

I look forward to seeing a lot of you guys out at either CA or the Garden this season. Hopefully, the 3 guys get eligible in the second semester, and we are on our way.

No you didn't call for him to be fired. You just STATED that you don't think our coach cheats, but that you believe that our coach wants to cheat and that the only reason he doesn't is because Fr. Harrington won't let him.

Don't apologize to us for having an absurd thought (or three) make it from your brain to your keyboard. Lots of people around here have done that.

Apologize to him for such an unfounded and slanderous remark. Maybe you can fit that apology in the notes section on your next donation check.

Am i missing something or isnt it possible that these 3 young men can be elligible in December ? Thants plenty of time to gel for the BE and whatever post season tourney we get in. Honestly, as long as these kids stay with the program who cares if they miss a semester. They are a very talented 8 Frosh and this is a good time to experience any growing pains. Lets stop ANY negative talk of coach Lav, he has turned this program in such a positive direction and things like this are when "TRUE" fans are supportive. Go Coach Lav, and Go Johnnies !!!!! PS_ we need anderson !!!

I believe EVERY major coach not named Bob Knight has at least been tempted to cheat at some point (I also believe a lack of this temptation is one of the reasons Knight's later teams fell from being truly dominant, at the end). It's only human, IMO.

I do believe that Lavin was given an edict not to break any NCAA rules, while administrators of other schools probably don't mention this to their coaches, or if they do, then look the other way when they know that rules are broken in the name of winning (see Miami and Ohio St., and those were just the guys who got caught). I mean, UCONN was hit with probation just 7 months ago, and they have a national championship, and 2 McDonald's All-American recruits coming in, mostly because Calhoun thumed his nose at the infractions commitee (a board that I hope we never have to go in front of again). Stuff like that just makes you wonder if nice guys can ever win at this college game. Fortunatly, I still think Lavin has enough of a controlled "mean-streak" to bring us back again.

SJUfan2, I wish I had the money to make a donation to the school. I'm fortunate that my father lets me use his tickets for nothing (he doesn't get to as many games as he used to).

Tough day but we will get through it
We still have our best class in over 20 years.
I will still be sitting there for as many games as I can
GO SJU!

First off, there isn't a Big East coach, or ACC, or Big Ten, who would have run from these kids based on their academics. Well, based on history maybe Notre Dame.

Two years ago we argued long and hard on here about recruiting a kid with an arrest record, and most of us would have been thrilled had he decided to come here.

Marginal academics is part of big time college basketball. These kids WILL gain eligibility and more than likly play for us soon.

I marked this season as one where we would hopefully produce some highlight reel moments, but may fall short of the NCAAs. I still think there will be many great moments with this bunch of kids, but even a few days ago we were ranked 11th in the big east preseason. We could be at full strength by the time January rolls around, and still make a lot of noise in league, but in any event we weren't slated for the upper eschelons of BE basketball - YET!

If you do go to CA or the Garden I expect you to be the guy who shouts FIRE!!! And be the first to run for the exit!!
You post a thread that that Ahole at the NY Post just loved and now you apologize??? All three of these kids are nice kids with talent that no college coach would not recruit in a heartbeat! There are football players cleared by the NCAA with 8th grade reading levels from southern schools! Because these three made a legitimate effort post high school they get screwed----period! As for your jab at Lavin, you should be ashamed! In less than a year he recruited and signed the best freshman class in a quarter century and gave three kids on the academic fence an opportunity and you think it is the end??? As for Father Harrington be aware that he firmly believes in giving kids a chance at SJ as we all discussed ad nauseum in another thread and these kids fall into that category! You don't see him firing the admissions staff for accepting kids with 2.0 GPAs and below average SATs do you??

Again, I am all for free speech but this thread belongs in the archives and should be locked!!

LET THE TEAM BOND AND DEVELOP CHEMISTRY AND EVENTUAL SUCCESS ON THE NATIONAL SCENE...LET THE NUMBERS DECIDE WHETHER LAVIN STAYS OR GOES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AGREED, THE NUMBERS SHOULD HAVE BEEN APPLIED TO NORM,BUT NOW WE HAVE A COACH WITH A GREAT VISION AND THE EXPERT STAFF TO FULFILL THIS MISSION.LET'S HOPE STEVE IS AROUND FOR A LONG TIME,WHICH WOULD MEAN AN NCAA TITLE FOR US

I never said it was the end for Lavin, no way, no how.

I just said that I wondered, if player eligibility becomes a repeated problem (let's hope not), how long would the powers that be put up with it?

You mentioned in another thread that Norm's record didn't matter that much to the administration for the first five years. Sadly, I think that was a correct assumption on you're part. They just wanted Norm to clean up the program, and it seemed like anybody with a sketchy academic reputation under him was shown the door immediatly (why wasen't Derwin Kitchen given a chance is a solid question to ask, although admitadly, we don't know the whole story there - FSU had no problem with him, though). Because of that, I'm still a little skeptical as to how they would react should player eligibility become a REPEATED (keyword there) problem.

Again, we're years away from anything I posted becoming a reality. I was just trying to think of a possible future scenerio (one that, let's hope, never happens), and admittadly, some of what I wrote was born out of frustration over yesterday's news.

Please refrain from posting in all-CAPS in the future.

It is the internet equivalent of shouting.

Thanks.

Norm Roberts would not have signed ANY of these players. He may have signed a bunch of players rated between 100-150 at best and we were all going to be happy about that scenario! Do you think he would have had a Ricardo Gathers in the fold who is a top 50 player? This was going to be an up and down year with all freshmen anyway so the sky is falling mindset by some fans is ridiculous! We are left with 3 top 100 players (four if you count Lindsey)! Would we have had FOUR TOP 100 players this year with Norm Roberts as coach?? I am not going to hold my breath for a response!

Well put. and to add I am heartened by Amir's and Norvel's stated determination to get back to the guys and coaches. JaKarr hasn't spoken yet, but it concerns me that his AAU spoke for him, and it wasn't exactly a totally inspiring set of comments.
