The 2014 College Basketball Preview

watched a little Villanova vs. BC. What happens to the new Big East if Villanova follows through on it's initial decision to move it's football program into the big time?

BC won all of 2 games last season. They are 2-0 but will lose 5 of their next 6. LOL!
Nova followed the BC loss with a loss to Fordham-----FORDHAM!!!
Villanova, Syracuse, Uconn, West Virginia, Cincy are big time in their dreams! In reality, they suck and most would fold financially had it not been for ESPN trying to fill programming voids.

WVU will be fine...they have been great before and will be great again for football. Agree with every other school sucking in football.

If fine is finishing with a losing record in the Big 12 and being at best in the middle of the pack then...OK.
But they never had a losing record in their last 5 years in the Big East. The question in the 12 is will they ever be better than a .500 team.

They have been national title contenders for 2 seasons recently. Once back when they had Slaton and White, and just a few years back with Geno. They were in the top 10. It's a country football school with lots of exposure and popular merchandise...I see it a decent amount even on LI. I think they are too big to fail.

Joe, you do realize that this thread is about the 2014 season, not Creighton's future. Like it or not McDermott is a part of the 2014 team barring an injury. As far as next year and beyond, what does that have to do with someone picking them to finish first this year?

How can someone have such tunnel vision to avoid the very real possibility of a complete free fall from Creighton after Doug leaves? I understand it's about 2014, but it must be a real concern. Unless Doug has a twin brother ready to suit up for another 4 years and Mr. McDermott keeps pumping out baby Dougs to replenish his team, I don't see how Creighton doesn't fall. I hope I'm wrong though.

NYCRedmen didn't say anything to make it seem like he has tunnel vision when it comes to Creighton. Life after McDermott doesn't have anything to do with Creighton this upcoming season.

Why are you going through great lengths to prove an irrelevant point (Creighton's team after McDermott leaves) when the discussion wasn't even about next year?

You've built your own strawman and now arguing against it.

I feel like a media representative in a Rex Ryan press conference and my question is ignored! I understand you are talking about the 2014 season period. Is it illegal to ask beyond that? I'm just curious what you guys think is all. Because unless they can pull their weight recruiting with the big teams, then I'm very worried they become a nonfactor in our conference without their 1 guy who does it all: Doug.

I know what you mean but hell, the Big East still thrived when we became a non-factor after Louie :sob: Forget about Creighton, if they finish in first, good for them, if they finish last, that means someone else finishes first. After 2014, if we are sending 5 to 6 six teams to the Tournament, who cares if it's Creighton or DePaul, someone always has to finish last.

He thinks Greene is going to be starting PG? He clearly has no idea who Branch is.

Agreed, not to mention he thinks Gift was a freshman 2 years ago, and he doesn't say a word about Sanchez and Hooper. Most of these preseason predictions are nonsense anyway, but when a writer can't get the facts right, I'm left regretting that I wasted the two minutes reading the article. I guess it's too much to ask for these guys to do a little research and be accountable for their work.

Anyway, I look forward to us moving away from the speculation and predictions, and getting on with practices and games. This year will be a lot of fun, regardless of what a misinformed writer believes.

How many of you had even heard of College Sports Madness (stupid freakin' name by the way) before someone found this article. Nuff said, even if it's connected to USA Today. Bleacher Report is connected to CNN. Doesn't mean it's not a useless space eater out there on the interweb.

Good ole whipping boy Bleacher Report is trying to legitimize itself. They have made some big hires recently. That's great. Now can they stop letting any Tom, Dick and Harry write something.

The former means nothing if they can't change the latter. Those who know nothing will not be able to tell the difference and pass on their bad stuff along with their good thereby denigrating the brand and those who do know will just stop reading rather than go through the tiresome process of not just reading but evaluating the quality of the content. Just MHO.

Typical surface-level analysis expected from "national" pre-season coverage. Only the outlets that are really tuned in know what is going on with every program in every conference, and even those seem to be in "a boatload of talent - now prove it" mode with us. Probably rightfully so.

The part of this that resonated most was "by the numbers". Looking at those almost makes 17-16/8-10 last year seem like an overperformance. We were in the bottom quarter of the conference and outside the Top 200 nationally in almost every statistic. Just brutal.

The good news is we already defend and take care of the basketball, two huge components. The need to shoot it better (from 3, 2, and the line) has been discussed at length and is clearly the #1 area of needed improvement. Where we need to make a secondary commitment this year is either cleaning up the glass or sharing the ball. In an ideal world you have both, but rarely do you see a team win at a high level without one or the other. You need one.

Two great examples in the Eastern Conference Finals last year. Indiana not a dynamic team in terms of creating for others on offense but wrapped up possessions and got lots of second chances. Miami not a good rebounding team at all but one of the best passing teams in the game.

I see both improving immensely for us (would be difficult not to) but hopefully we really take one to the next level.

That was a pretty good write-up. Makes for a nice match-up with Wisconsin.

St. John’s:

Last Season: 17-16, 8-10 Big East (11th); Lost in the NIT’s 2nd Round
Key Losses: Amir Garrett
Key Returnees: D’Angelo Harrison (17.8 ppg, 4.3 rpg), Phil Greene (10.1 ppg, 2.7 apg), JaKarr Sampson (14.9 ppg, 6.6 rpg), Chris Obekpa (6.2 rpg, 4.0 bpg)
Key Newcomers: Rysheed Jordan, Orlando Sanchez, Max Hooper
Outlook: The Johnnies will be the most intriguing team in the Big East next season. They are deep, they are talented, they have athletes up and down their roster. JaKarr Sampson might end up being a lottery pick. D’Angelo Harrison and Rysheed Jordan will be one of the most dynamic back courts in the country. Chris Obepka defends the rim like he’s got skis for arms. Will they put all the pieces together? Can Steve Lavin coach a winning team? He’ll have every chance this season.
