The 2014 College Basketball Preview

My last word on the subject; criticizing College football because It is harder for David to beat Goliath is like criticizing Kate Upton for her penmanship! :)

At all ???? My fellow johnnie we will def make the top 25 this year !!! We should of been at least 10-8 last year in the big east (ot lost to nova cause we committed a foul on the 3 point line with 40 seconds left, close game with providence) along with 3 bullshit losses that we should of won on our non conference schedule (unc-ashville, usf, Murray state) we lost those games because we were the youngest team in America, inexperienced , not knowing how to close out games. We are loaded this year ! We are the most athletic team in America (Jay Williams even said it himself) , but most of all we now experienced upper class man , seniors and juniors know how to win games . We finally have a bench we are 11 deep. 4 guard rotation between Jordan, Harrison , Greene , branch . Then with Jakar, sir Dom, hooper on the wings . Have a nice 3 big man rotation of oblockpa, Sanchez, and gift. Marco, balamou, Christian jones can give us some insurance or some good spurt minutes. People also forget that Sanchez is 25 years old he is a grown man that is going to be playing against 18,19,20 year olds he's going to be moving bodies easily. We can finally break zones with Sanchez at the high post , Jordan penetrating and kicking . We can finally rebound and get out on the break more. Are players are never going to be tired because we are so deep. This is a top 25 team with no doubt anything less than elite 8 is a failure you have to put these expectations for this team . We have 5 nba players on the roster . Jakarr(who still has 3 years to work on his game), obeckpa(defense alone gets him in, Also can work on offense for another 3 years) Sanchez , Jordan( could be a 1 and done) and sir Dom (has 2 years to work on that jump shot , his defense and athleticism gets him in the nba think tony Allen). This team is much better than our 2011 boys that made the dance and they got the be the # 12 team in the nation , lavin coached those kids who weren't even his. We will make the top ten ! We will make noise in the dance , we will make New York City believe !!!!

How many teams truly go from missing the tourney and one of the worst FG% teams in the nation to top 10 elite 8 overnight? Just to see SJU with a number from 1-25 next to it would be a major, major thing in itself. Don't get me wrong, we are loaded, but we are SJU. We need to learn how to win again. Not sure if that all happens in 1 year from rags to riches. Being a top 10 team means you are essentially the cream of the crop. There are lots of very good teams...let's see how we come out of the gate before demanding a top 10 appearance. Recent history tells us that the hype has not added up. I would be the most excited fan on the entire board if we cracked the top 10...ecstatic if we made the elite 8. But let's not get carried away. We have tons of potential...right now it's still just potential. I'll need some evidence we are top 10 caliber before I can agree with that opinion. That evidence means no stupid losses, get off to a hot start winning the games we should, beating the big boys of the Big East i.e. teams like Marquette, Nova, Cuse, G'Town, etc. and finding consistency.

Thats the thing Joe, its not overnight. It's been since Lavin took over. Building the programs reputation back up the first year, great recruiting classes the following two years, and now the time is here. Recent history has been about inexperienced teams with a short bench. We're now an upperclassmen laden team with a deep bench. There are literally no excuses for those poor out of conference losses this year. As other posters have pointed out, several of our players could/will leave for the pros after this year. THIS is our year to do big things.

I agree w Joe. The expectations of a top 10 finish or national championship is a bit too lofty. It is possible, but unlikely. Give me a sweet 16 and I will be happy.

I was just saying it was a major reasaon I ddn't like college football. There's also the lack of skill level vs NFL (unlike NBA where fundamentals and strategy aren't really important at all).

But that's not the main reason I dont' GAF about college footbal, it's mostly the college football fans that bother me. ;)

Oh well, don't let the door hit you in the #$$ as you don't GAF! :)

Sporting news college BB preview has us 7th in the BE .

Does he predict that every starter will have their arms fall off during the first game? Seriously, wtf? If we finish any worse than 4th, something went seriously, seriously wrong i.e. major injury to key player(s) or Jordan/Sanchez/Hooper becoming complete busts.

I try to be conservative on here with my expectations compared to many, but even I don't see us any worse than 4th.

I dont agree with those rankings but we haven't proven that we deserve to mentioned at the top

Hey Joe, North Dakota State (an FCS school) just beat the reigning Big 12 champs in their house and Towson (also an FCS) beat UCONN, which is in a BCS conference. NDSU has now won 7 of their last 10 games vs. FBS schools.

You beat me to it but I don't really care much about the upsets but anyone that didn't see yesterday's Ole Miss Vandy game missed a great one. Somehow I think College FT will survive just fine without the support of Joe and Astour. Oh well, to each his own.

That's what happens when you go to an ivy league school, you end up finding lax more compelling than college football. Hey, lots of folks watch Nascar as well. To each his own.

I love just about every sport but the only one my brother-in-law does like-car racing. Needless to say we are not close lol. Oh I said just about every sport but car racing-add lax to my short list and unless it's the finals of the World Cup-soccer. On topic would like to see us finish 23-7, win a game or two in BET and a game or two in NCAAs at minimum-recruit well enough to continue success nest year leading to a great 2015 class so this program can really take off.

So congrats, you found the white buffalo. The few upsets that ever happen. By the way, Towson beating UConn is not a big deal. Remember, I said RANKED and power conference. Not either or. There are schools that aren't that great in power conferences unranked like Virginia, UConn, Cuse, etc. so it's not nearly as meaningful. I still don't think you even named 5...you are up to 2 or 3. #2 Ohio State plays Buffalo soon...watch the score be 56-3.

Toledo expected to give top 10 Florida a tuff game on the road. we shall see.

Why ???? Why be happy with that ?? Understand this is our one shot to make something special happen because the way recuiting is going we're going to have to wait until 2015 to make noise again and let's hope Jakar and obeckpa are still around which won't be likely. We have to set the bar high real high , forget about disappointment . We been in the dumps for the last 10 years we haven't had a chance to put expectations this high . My johnnies think big this year enough with the " they have to prove it first " this is our time . Our time is now .

Nah, probably another 42-10 blowout just like 99% of them.

Ranked power conference basketball teams do not lose to the St. Francis' of the world on their home floor very often.

And don't throw me one or 2 examples because teams play 5-10 cupcakes a year compared to football teams playing 1, if even that many, per year. I'd bet the percentage of major upsets in football is greater than in basketball, and that's even with all the football upsets happening on the road.
