The 2014 College Basketball Preview

Until it's done on the Court, pre-season forecasting only makes for conversation. This team needs to show a lot of improvement on defense, perimeter shooting, rebounding and foul shooting. It's time for Lavin and these players to step up and show they will contend for a BE Title..Finishing 7th or 8th in the BE would not be progress in my mind, regardless of a NCAA bid.

I think until we actually start showing the "so called" experts that we can shoot from the outside, can rebound with the big boys, can defend the 3 & make free throws, many college basketball gurus won't give us the respect. I know there has been some positive press as of late but even those articles have been more in the "we may be a surprise team" instead of actually saying we will be one of the teams to beat. That said, maybe it's better that they keep picking us 6th & 7th, it will be all the more sweeter when we prove them wrong.
City, U right there with reasons we getting picked 6th@7th. You pick us higher, right? Where's the biggest improvement?

Yes, I think we will finish higher, how high remains to be seen. The improvement should come in three areas:

Point guard play - Rysheed Jordan can only help our PG situation if he is as good as advertised
Rebounding - Sanchez & Gift will no doubt help ease our issues on boards
Beyond the Arc - Hooper (and hopefully Marco) will help open up the floor on offense

And hopefully a well disciplined Harrison.

I picked up my copy of Lindy's today. Many of you already know that they have us picked 6th. Below are their picks for the season:

1-Creighton (sorry Joe)
2-Marquette
3-Butler
4-Georgetown
5-Villanova
6-St. John's
7-Xavier
8-Providence
9-Seton Hall
10-DePaul

Their "All-Conference" picks for us are D'Angelo Harrison 2nd team & JaKarr Sampson 3rd team. Top Defender Chris Obekpa & Most Entertaining D'Angelo Harrison. They also mention that Rysheed Jordan was the "Number 1 signing coup" & that he will be the best "playmaker/passer" and that he is "dynamic enough to help the program get back to the NCAA Tournament".

Other "Picks" of note:
Player of the year - Doug McDermott
Rookie of the year - JaJuan Johnson (Marquette)
Top Shooter - McDermott
Top Rebounder - McDermott
Top Player - Grant Gibbs
Most Versatile - Bryce Cotton
Top NBA Prospect - Semaj Christon

Last & most importantly they have 6 Big East teams going to the NCAA Tournament (same as the ACC), they are Creighton, Butler, Georgetown, Marquette, Villanova & ST. JOHNS!!!. Lets hope they know something in the bracketology department.

I'll take the NCAA tourney any way we can get it...but has a mid major program like Creighton ever had a totally seamless transition to major basketball finishing 1st right away? I highly doubt it will happen. Not saying they will be bad...they won't, but they will need time to get used to NCAA tourney games every conference game instead of having many gimme's on their schedule in the MVC. But, hey if they win it then that means they are ranked and did a great job which only raises the profile of the conference. My major concerns with Creighton are 1) transitioning from mid major to a major conference and 2) Life after McDermott...is there any?

The teams Creighton played in the MVC they were lucky to have 2 or 3 tourney quality teams to face. The rest were just cheap filler. In our conference they will face Xavier, Butler, Nova, G'Town, SJU, Marquette, Prov...that's 7 tourney quality teams more than double what they saw in the MVC. That's why I don't see a totally seamless transition like most people seem to think. And also, who just said that Creighton's future doesn't matter because Doug is with them this year? I wasn't aware we were renting Creighton for 1 year...if we were I would agree. But they are now locked in with us and if they suck after McDermott which there is a fair chance of, they will hurt our RPI and conference reputation. One good season from a team is not good enough.

Joe, you do realize that this thread is about the 2014 season, not Creighton's future. Like it or not McDermott is a part of the 2014 team barring an injury. As far as next year and beyond, what does that have to do with someone picking them to finish first this year?

How can someone have such tunnel vision to avoid the very real possibility of a complete free fall from Creighton after Doug leaves? I understand it's about 2014, but it must be a real concern. Unless Doug has a twin brother ready to suit up for another 4 years and Mr. McDermott keeps pumping out baby Dougs to replenish his team, I don't see how Creighton doesn't fall. I hope I'm wrong though.

NYCRedmen didn't say anything to make it seem like he has tunnel vision when it comes to Creighton. Life after McDermott doesn't have anything to do with Creighton this upcoming season.

Why are you going through great lengths to prove an irrelevant point (Creighton's team after McDermott leaves) when the discussion wasn't even about next year?

You've built your own strawman and now arguing against it.

Man, who the hell cares about Creighton.... wait... what?.... in our new conference?.... WTF?.

I feel like a media representative in a Rex Ryan press conference and my question is ignored! I understand you are talking about the 2014 season period. Is it illegal to ask beyond that? I'm just curious what you guys think is all. Because unless they can pull their weight recruiting with the big teams, then I'm very worried they become a nonfactor in our conference without their 1 guy who does it all: Doug.

They are coming off great year. This year they will get even more attention. If they replicate or come close and kids see their building packed every night and Doug getting Lottery pick talk kids will go there. And the operation will keep churning.......

I know what you mean but hell, the Big East still thrived when we became a non-factor after Louie :sob: Forget about Creighton, if they finish in first, good for them, if they finish last, that means someone else finishes first. After 2014, if we are sending 5 to 6 six teams to the Tournament, who cares if it's Creighton or DePaul, someone always has to finish last.

watched a little Villanova vs. BC. What happens to the new Big East if Villanova follows through on it's initial decision to move it's football program into the big time?

BC won all of 2 games last season. They are 2-0 but will lose 5 of their next 6. LOL!
Nova followed the BC loss with a loss to Fordham-----FORDHAM!!!
Villanova, Syracuse, Uconn, West Virginia, Cincy are big time in their dreams! In reality, they suck and most would fold financially had it not been for ESPN trying to fill programming voids.

WVU will be fine...they have been great before and will be great again for football. Agree with every other school sucking in football.

If fine is finishing with a losing record in the Big 12 and being at best in the middle of the pack then...OK.
But they never had a losing record in their last 5 years in the Big East. The question in the 12 is will they ever be better than a .500 team.
