Tariq Owens

Get Tariq a jump hook and a reliable 12-15 jump shot and he'll be a huge plus for the offense next year.
Watched Red Storm Report yesterday and Mullin said he is not worried about his weight he just needs to strengthen his core. Sure why not just put him on a liquid diet and shave a few more pounds off that imposing frame?

Could be off on this but was TO the first player to commit to us after the Mullin hiring? If I'm not mistaken it was only a few days after. If that's the case we are lucky the timing worked out to get a player who filled our biggest need this year MIDSEASON by stepping up his game. Impressive and really needed.

Hi Sirvoo!
So many supportive and upbeat ( I've been using that word a lot) posts here
Nice
Surely T O is a significant, pleasant and surprising story with all the positive aspects conveyed in your and other preceding posts!

If some want to dwell on which recruit did not blossom ( immediately) or lament which "stud" was not signed, good to give equal time to this fine young man.

And what a magnet he is and will be with potential recruits - who wouldn't want to hang around his goodwill and spirit! Great ambassador for the Redmen!

Good for you Tariq!!!

Mullins comment that Tariq doesn't have to gain weight to improve his game is simply facing reality. Tariq has been here two years lifting weights and eating extra meals and probably hasn't gained 5 lbs.He has to concentrate on the other facets of his game and if any strength or weight gain happens that would be great but he can be a force without it.
The key is to put a tough 6ft 9in.forward along side him.

That was a bizarre statement by Mullin, considering the fact that Owens has gained 20 pounds since he's arrived at SJU.

Going from 180-200 is one thing but going from 200-220 is another. His dad on twitter seems to know that if he can he needs to gain weight. Seems like they'll try.

Oh, and one other thing from my favorite TV show (yeah right) The Red Storm Report-Mullin while still discussing Tarik said he expects him to be a 3 point shooter next season. Say what? Kid hasn't even established a reliable 10 footer now he is ready to graduate to 20 footers? Trust the process...I guess.

It's not impossible for his slight frame to gain another 20-25 lbs by next season. However, he has to be totally committed to an aggressive eating program in addition to the required lifting.

Question is: did he start yesterday with trying to eat a more than he did the day before?

Actions verify priorities.

Did not know that we had so many nutritionists on this board. I am sorry, but some people just aren't going to gain much weight. What Mullin said is correct, they will work with Tariq to increase his core strength and add to his game. As someone posted earlier, to gain the first 20 lbs was one thing but anymore is quite another matter. Let's appreciate what Tariq brings to the table instead of trying to mold him into what we think he should be. Hopefully he will continue to get better over the next two years.

not a nutritionist but I've got past experience working with a few college & pro S & C coaches during offseason working with mix of college and some pro athletes

Owens won't be 275 but no reason he can't be 225...Point was everyday counts and hopefully he already started, same for Freudenberg, Ponds etc.

Watch a recent Ponds instagram post and see him do really crappy curls and it would make you question the the quality of instruction going on with S & C team at SJU.

Two are long timers at SJU and a younger kid. Not all that impressive credentials.

Most posters, myself included, have found that putting on that second 20 pounds is really quite easy.

True, but it's usually in the belly.

Agree. And the reality is that expanding Tariq's range is probably in his best long term interest. He'll never be spaceeater.

The Board was killing the big guy a couple of years ago for being too fat. Now we have a big guy who is too skinny.

I don't care how fat or how skinny they are. Just play the game well.

I hope slim nails down that 12 foot jump shot during the off season.

that's us focusing on our core :)

I think he will gain 20 pounds. He needs to go to big man camp and develop his skills. Watched a little bit of Patton last night, also skinny, but he has such good hands. Has a soft touch and knows how to get the ball in the hoop.

Tariq continues to push himself. He is loosing some of the awkwardness that comes with being 6'11. I really think he has potential.
