Tariq Owens

If his follow-up slam doesn't make SC top 10 there should be an investigation. :cheer:

They should run it from the block straight through the slam, baseline to baseline awesomeness.

. He skies for the block from outside the circle. Celebrates his amazing block, then like a gazelle makes it easily back for the putback slam.

Everybody has to love this kid. He's ALL hustle, and has excellent athleticism. Plays with enthusiasm. He will only get better. Love watching the way he effects game at both ends of the court. He's a really sneaky good player, that teams still don't scout for at all.

Lost in the stats is 8 sju blocks, 3 by owens, 4 by yakwe, one by ahmed. Together they held delgado from having his way, with ahmed putting a body on him and mot getting out muscled.

Not trying to knock obekpa but owens blocks shots the way they should be blocked - without sacrificing straight up d. He has cat like quickness and tremendous length. Fun to watch

If this kid keeps working hard, he will be All Big East 1st Team before he graduates. He is here for two more years!

This was truly a great acquisition that occurred very early in the Mullin era. Once again....big kudos to Matt.

April 2015 CM hired to coach an expansion team w double AA players
An amazing - truly - 21 months turnover later we are pondering a tourney bid!
And how many negative critiques have been
posted (IMO prematurely & sometimes rather ruthlessly)
Against CM
Against Owens, Ahmed, and of course Yakwe, Mussini, others
Nice time to be a fan
Such promise
Good times ahead and hey
These are already good, fun-to-watch times

The best!

Never expected this level of play by Tariq & agree he can really impact a game in ways not always evident in box score. (Although yesterday that was quite evident)

Related to this, give Matt A credit for assessing his & Williams potential getting both to transfer here. His bringing Simon & Clark seems to have similar potential. In rebuilding process, where would we be without these guys? Nobody is perfect, but have to give credit where due.

Btw, really hope Williams is back. Lastly, I sense Matt has a specific grad transfer candidate from his Rolodex in mind to provide more interior physicality & rebounding. With two transfers sitting out, key guys returning & a grad transfer with bulk, I see a very good team next season.

Ahmed on Delgado? Maybe on the occasional switch. KY was on him from the git go with Tariq on Nzei.

Per Jon Rothstein
Tariq Owens has now blocked four or more shots in 10 different games this year for St. John's. Has emerged as legit defensive anchor. #SJUBB

They switched it up a lot to try to limit starters foul exposure. For his part, Ali got his tirn and wasn't burned

The best part of that block and slam sequence if you were there is that the crowd cheered the block, then it got louder with the slam, and then over a minute or so it rise to a roar until SH called timeout as the place exploded. REALLY great fan reaction reminiscent of the days when the msg crowd was our 6th man

I dont want to overpost on the same subject but I think we have gotten a special player in Tariq. With hopefullly other good scorers in the program we don't need him to average 17 points per game but with a little more work I think Tariq can develop into a legitimate offensive threat to go with his blocks, rebounds and hustle.

You are not over posting at all but rather praising a kid who lost his mother at a young age, didn't have things work out for him at his first school of choice and continues to be positive and to make the best of his experience and the chance he took on SJU and its rookie coach. I am sure he has exceeded everyone's expectations, perhaps not his dad, and is really a fan favourite.
So refreshing to read posts like yours rather than knee jerk reactions about Jc busts, players who should be in division 2 , bums , players who hopefully will be in Croatia next year , etc. Don't stop.

He needs 25 pounds, a 15 foot jump shot, and to learn to count to 10 when he feels like taunting one of his victims.

If he works hard off season and can put on 20 pounds, He can be very good next year.

yes he needs to add some weight
20 more pounds would be ideal for a year. With his size and explosiveness this kid can be electric. He already is now the guy that usually gets us jumping out of our seats with his high flying acrobats. Add to that him being able to push people around with some more weight and that would really be something

Based on his improvement this year Tariq because of his length and work ethic that if he gained 25 lbs and a 15 ft jump shot SJU would have an all big east player and possibly an all American. Let's just watch him continue to develop.

Why you hatin on the kid after the best game of his career?
