Tariq Owens

I dont want to overpost on the same subject but I think we have gotten a special player in Tariq. With hopefullly other good scorers in the program we don't need him to average 17 points per game but with a little more work I think Tariq can develop into a legitimate offensive threat to go with his blocks, rebounds and hustle.

He needs 25 pounds, a 15 foot jump shot, and to learn to count to 10 when he feels like taunting one of his victims.

Why you hatin on the kid after the best game of his career?

My bad, I thought he was Italian.

Lets hope that the eye for transfer talent Matt had for Tariq Owens is as good for transfers Marvin Clark, Jr. and Justin Simon.

There is a jump shot hiding somewhere in that skinny frame. Or get Kareem in here and have him Tariq sky hook lessons. It is amazing that not a single player since Jabbar could come close to duplicating the single most devastating weapon in basketball history. Kareem owes us one since choosing UCLA over us.

He has a decent stroke and has shown he can hit the 10' jumper, just not consistantly. I expect that's one the things he'll be working on over the summer.

He appears to have some Sicilian in game.

Never expected this level of play by Tariq & agree he can really impact a game in ways not always evident in box score. (Although yesterday that was quite evident)

Related to this, give Matt A credit for assessing his & Williams potential getting both to transfer here. His bringing Simon & Clark seems to have similar potential. In rebuilding process, where would we be without these guys? Nobody is perfect, but have to give credit where due.

Btw, really hope Williams is back. Lastly, I sense Matt has a specific grad transfer candidate from his Rolodex in mind to provide more interior physicality & rebounding. With two transfers sitting out, key guys returning & a grad transfer with bulk, I see a very good team next season.
And a potential existing recruit in Freudenberg. I know it may be wishful thinking or lunacy. But, the staff saw something in him. If he works over the summer and starts to fulfill the promise we had for him, it'll be like another recruit.

From what I recall, RF was a highly recruited & desirable YOUNG European recruit sought by schools other than us - RF had options!
There were many posts on this site eager to have him and when he signed we were all pleased - very...
This year he got his feet wet, dealt w his major cultural change...
He could be a very fine contributing player for us if we give him a break...
and "time will tell"
Walt Whitman would likely reflect that we need to chill 'says I to myself'
Thanks
:)

Richard is just 18 years old and will build up his body over the off season.

Richard will be a contributor before his career Is over at St. John's.

Maybe Richard adds 20-30lbs of muscle in the off-season and he becomes the PF/low-post presence that we're looking for?

Most improved player on the team. Credit to him for putting in the work and effort in season to get to where he is, which is not easy. As good as Ponds, Lovett, and Ahmed have been we probably aren't at 6 wins in conference without TO.

Seems as though we have found our starting center for the next 2 years, already exciting but who still has upside, which is just incredible to say given where we mostly thought we were in this department 2 months ago.

Next year I think that 15 footer goes down for him. Just hasn't seemed to get totally comfortable with when that's his shot within the offense. With all the progress he's already made in more challenging areas, a summer full of hundreds of jumpers when he already has good form is probably going to pay big dividends for him. If he makes that a rhythm shot for him could see that becoming a shot we look to get him. In particular has been effective diving to rim in P&R game, if he can contrast that with pick and pop becomes an even harder guard.

Also think he has ability to become back to basket presence. When he gets position at 5-7 feet, with his high release and if he can get comfortable with a slight fade, very difficult to defend if he can make that shot a part of his repertoire.

Re: added weight think it's a middle ground. He may not be a candidate to add 30+ lbs. and become a bruiser. As others have alluded to that might not even be completely beneficial to his long/quick/athletic game. But adding 10-15 of muscle, even if not as visibly noticeable, should be helpful in making him more solid in the post.

Could be off on this but was TO the first player to commit to us after the Mullin hiring? If I'm not mistaken it was only a few days after. If that's the case we are lucky the timing worked out to get a player who filled our biggest need this year MIDSEASON by stepping up his game. Impressive and really needed.

I just find it kind of humorous. We have a kid who is an outstanding hustler and athlete, with tremendous timing and anticipation down low, who runs the floor like a gazelle, and already is a big asset and an impact player. What he isn't is a dominant inside force on offense, or tremendous rebounder. The suggestion for improvement - 30 lbs of muscle, a 15 foot jumper, and a sky hook, while all very nice to have, are not very likely to be gained over the next 2 seasons. We say that nearly every season talented athlete with limited offensive games, or who isn't a rebounding machine. I'd say be happy with what he is right now, because the improvements we will see will be smaller in nature, but not diminish his value to the squad.

Agree Well put

That's my point. RF had a tough first year. But has potential upside. If he can deliver some of it in year 2, it's like another recruit.

His father sounds like he has a good head on his shoulders and is positive influence.

Tariq's father posted this photo noting he had a five inch growth spurt in 8 months as a young kid. Thought he was going to be a point guard.

Get Tariq a jump hook and a reliable 12-15 jump shot and he'll be a huge plus for the offense next year.
