For many St John's fans, me included, it still is hard to believe, let alone accept, the evidence that we were once at the same level as Syracuse in college BB ..We aren't anymore and the drought is now into its' second decade..
Yes, Lavin has improved the program to a mid tier BE level, but Syracuse has elevated into the Duke, Kentucky, L'ville, Mich State, UNC,Kansas,UCONN level.. It's been painful to watch ..And, our downfall was swift and deep..Recovery has not been quick or substantial yet.
12/15 at MSG will be a showcase for college BB in NY.. I wonder if the situation was reversed and Syracuse had fallen off the competitive map for 13 or so years and had the won/loss record we've had in that time period, if the subway alumni for the Orange would be so prominently in attendance?
I'm certain if we had a potential final 4 team again, and Syracuse had been to the NCAA's once in the last decade, there would not be that many Orange sweaters in the GARDEN either. More likely the Garden would have looked like the sea of RED, it was back in Feb 1985 against G'town, when we were the number 1 team in the country.. The Sweater game!
In Team Sports, winning is the driving ingredient in fan involvement, its undeniable.. NY will embrace St John's BB Again when it shows the ability to play a competitive opponent, like Syracuse, and have a even chance at winning. We're not there yet..
If we had started this season like a Villanova, won a tourney, beaten ranked teams, been unbeaten... I think its possible that 15,000 would come out for the game, with a equal RED/orange representation.
It's been games like this in the Garden or other venues against Indiana, Maryland, Kentucky,G'town, Marquette, Duke over a long time span, with blow out losses that have drained even the most loyal fans..
Sure, the Hardy team did a lot to revive the program with quality wins but, those results haven't been followed up yet.. Yes, the buzz did return with that team..
We're all waiting to see it again.
