Syracuse Game Thread

Harrison should be completely focused on stopping Triche. Triche can overpower most guards and can catch fire from 3. Harrison is strong enough to not let that happen. Cuse only has 3 legit scorers in Fair, Triche and Williams. Shut them down and Obepka will swat anything Grant and Christmas throw at the rim.
He has be offensively off last two games hope he is..on Marco need 25 mins and he will givw us 15pts

Whats the latest on Branch?

Back when I commuted to St. John’s my best friend “went away” (quaint, but that is what we kids in Bklyn called it back then)--to Syracuse. So of course I visited him all the time for the obvious reasons which I need not state here, (anyone who is 18+ and in college and lives with Mommy and Daddy knows what I mean.)

Loved the bars, hated all the snow. Had a blast and best of all, we beat them in BB several times during those 6 years; he went to law school there on a combined 6 year program) I commuted to St. John’s for 7 years.

Liked Tipperary Hill with the “green” light on top. Hated downtown Syracuse and all the snow.

We can win, if a few of the things mentioned in this thread happen. CO has a big game, for some reason--- I sense that.

Anyway, Mattc thanks for starting a great thread.

Let’s go Redmen! (That is what we were from ’71 to ’78.)

Any word on the team's travel plans for this game? This storm is supposed to cripple the upstate New York area. The further north you go, the worse the snow.

Ideally, us and the officials make it up there, but the snow cripples the area so much, that most folks stay home, turning the normally loud Carrier Dome into an atmosphere that sounds more like one of our home games. I understand this has little to no chance of happening, but what a shame that would be, huh (and by calling it a shame, I mean it would be a very, very good thing)?

Team leaving tomorrow morning.

Wanted to get this going. I want this game so bad. As many of you know and for those that don't, I went to Syracuse.

As for the matchup, I think the keys will be on defense. I'd like to see Lavin put Pointer on Michael-Carter Williams and Sampson on CJ Fair. I think those matchups are crucial. Play a lineup of Greene, Harrison, Pointer, Sampson, Obekpa as the starting five. Without Branch, we need Greene on the floor as much as possible because Harrrison can't be the main ballhandler going up against the Cuse zone. Hope Bourgault gets some major minutes to extend the defense, but I don't think pairing Bourgault and Harrison in the backcourt together will be a good idea against Cuse.

Cuse has only 7 scholarship players. They love to run but I think we can run with them. Cuse only has one big - Rakeem Christmas, and I think that Obekpa can take care of him. Cuse doesn't have great bigs this year.

Matt, you get both +1 kharma and thank you from me, because like my kids, you went to another Big East school, YET still root for St. John's vs. their school. Obviously a win in the Carrier Dome would be great. Seven scholarship [players or not. big or not, beating Cuse in the dome is a tall order. I haven't been serious about our NCAA hopes and still am not, but a win in the dome may change that for me. You seem to think there is hope, so I'll go with that.

If we want this win we need everyone to bring their A-game. I don't think Harrison needs to go off, but he needs to get at least 15 points and play an overall solid game.

LETS GO REDMEN!!!!

Well thats what I heard a couple of hours ago.

I think with Harrison and the Frenchman we can break the zone and whip their butt

Bourgault could play a big role. The biggest difference might be allowing Harrison to get some space. It's very tough to keep tabs on two great shooters in the zone when they are running through the lane or baseline. I like what Dunlap did against the zone at times last year overloading one side with Harrison waiting with his feet set and Moe at the foul line extended, forcing the defense to choose. I'd like to see the same with Sampson and one of the shooters or perhaps even Bourgout and Harrison.

Pointer is built to stop a player exactly like MCW. Cooney could be the biggest thorn in our sides Sunday. I thin Rakeem Christmas is as overrated as they come. I also fully expect Southerland to be eligible by Sunday and that will be a game changer.

On SNY just now the Syracuse show had Beheim (spelling?) say there is no word on Southerland - did not seem like that player would be on the court. We shall see.

Leaving tomorrow at 7 A.M. with my two bothers. Going to Baseball H.O.F. tomorrow afternoon, dinner at Dinosaur BBQ Saturday night, and will be witnessing a big time upset Sunday my first/last time ever at the ugliest building in America. Lets go Johnnies!

While I would like to be as optimistic as everyone and would be thrilled if SJU won (maybe even more so then when SJU upset Duke 2 years ago at MSG or better yet 10 years ago at MSG after Hatten's gw ft), history is not in SJU's favor. I put together a list of the past ten games and results.

Date W/L SU SJU Marg. Home/Away
2/18/2003 L 66 60 6 Away
1/7/2004 L 65 59 6 Away
1/5/2005 L 79 65 14 Home
2/12/2006 L 75 60 15 Home
1/21/2007 W 60 64 -4 Home
1/2/2008 L 76 70 6 Away
2/24/2009 L 87 58 29 Home
3/2/2010 L 85 66 19 Away
1/12/2011 L 76 59 17 Home
2/4/2012 L 95 70 25 Home

The average margin of victory is 13.3 over the last 10 games. It is not pretty but hopefully this team could turn it around and steal one in Syracuse, will be tough but hopefully they just keep it close. I'm guessing the line will be -13.5.

It's been rough Will the last 10 years, and we had it bad being up there together. The problem has been that they always run us out of the gym. This year we finally have the athletes and the horses to run with them. They have been a different team with only 7 scholarship guys, and I do not see them running circles around us. I think this will be a much closer game then it has been in recent years.

Mattc I think you are right, this team definitely will be able to run with these guys for the most part, and I love that their Bigs are not so powerful that they can kill us; that is why CO can come up big.

I am so hopeful.

Imagine this: (1) we blow them out like we’ve done to Duke every so often (that would be so sweet, good God) or (2) D lo Harrison hits all three free throws with nothing left on the clock, cause he got fouled trying a three with us down two.

come on guys.......let's steal one and go home!
Let's go REDMEN!

Ever hear of the law of averages? We are well overdue...and how many of those teams from those years were as good or better than our current team? 2? I can only hope Cuse takes us lightly because we are absolutely the kind of dangerous team that can steal one from them. No team wins 100% of their matchups.

I just feel a sense of calm for these next 2 games. None of us expect them to be wins, but we all obviously hope for them. Instead of playing "not to lose" against teams like Seton Hall, Rutgers, DePaul, etc. Cuse and L'Ville will be playing "not to lose" against us. I still view next year as the true time to make big noise, so it would make losses easier to take, but hey if success comes sooner than expected then why not us?
