Summer get together with Matt / JohnniesPride Tweet
Many of the comments in this thread are among the most humorous I have read in a long time.

Repetitive posters on this site enjoying the anonymity of this public forum criticizing Matt’s offer to meet fellow alums and fans of St. John’s basketball..... priceless.
I agree. Matt offering to take time and meet passionate fans instead of just big donors of very generous of him.

I know most will roll their eyes and expect lots of "coach speak" but you'd be surprised what some guys say off the record namely Goff. I think it's a positive anytime a staff member tries to meet with fans or take questions.

Yeah he does and loose lips sink ships

If he's half as chatty on the record as he is off the record, it should be fun. Someone should ask his thoughts on the current recruiting structure and April no-shows.
So, you going?
Will it be in Oakland? If not, I'll just wait for Mullin and Mitch's, since they'll be closer to me this summer than Matt will.
Deputize, ask bama fan and '72 to stand in, better yet why don't you just tweet Matt.
1) Don't know either of those guys
2) Don't have a twitter account.
Gotcha, but you can PM bamafan and 72 to stand in for you.;)
Here are some things that you could ask:

1.  What are the factors that would make a talented Big man like Kofi decide to choose St. John's over other schools?
2.  Who on the staff can develop a big man's talent the best?
3.  What is the biggest recruiting challenge facing St. John's in the New York City metro area?
4.  Why does he think players have been leaving the program?
5.  What does he think of the absence of Slice?
6.  If St. John's were to hire another assistant coach who are his favorite candidates.
7.  Does his wife enjoy living in NYC and does she attend the games.
8.  Has he blocked the Maven on Twitter?
9.  How often does he visit redmen.com?
10. Is he actively looking for another job opportunity?
Why should I ask your questions for you? Go yourself and fire away.

I might have to find different stand-ins. I'm polite in real life, but I'm not sure if those guys are.
Ba-boom:)

Let me save you a trip:

1. What are the factors that would make a talented Big man like Kofi decide to choose St. John's over other schools?
A: We have to show up he has the opportunity to be a big part of a rising program.

2. Who on the staff can develop a big man's talent the best?
A: Development of big men, like all players involves the entire staff. From Coach M all the way down to the trainer.

3. What is the biggest recruiting challenge facing St. John's in the New York City metro area?
A: Performance on the court has not been up to 'expectations' lately, so we have to show recruits that they can accomplish their goals here and resume the winning tradition of the program.

4. Why does he think players have been leaving the program?
A: Unfortunately, in the current state of the college basketball, roster turnover is a facet of all programs. We are no different.

5. What does he think of the absence of Slice?
A: We miss him, and he brought a lot to the table, but it just didn't work as all parties expected. We're all still great friends.

6. If St. John's were to hire another assistant coach who are his favorite candidates.
A: We like our current staff, and I have nothing further to add to that.

7. Does his wife enjoy living in NYC and does she attend the games.
A: She loves it! NYC is the greatest city in the world.

8. Has he blocked the Maven on Twitter?
A: You know I can't comment on individuals on Twitter, or otherwise.

9. How often does he visit redmen.com?
A: I am aware of it, but I do not actively visit it.

10. Is he actively looking for another job opportunity?
A. Ha! No, I love this program and my job.

See how much you learned?

I applaud Matt for reaching out to fans. No I don't expect him to reveal state secrets. However, this is actually very forward thinking. In fact, it is really not that unusual in that professional sports teams have these events with season ticket holders. I get this is college and somewhat different. However, from personal experience I can tell you I have met Mark Murphy who runs the Green Bay Packers. He takes questions from fans. Sandy Alderson does similar events with the Mets. Obviously this (SJU recruiting) is a smaller scale (and $$$ aren't involved as far as we know) and I hardly think the pro team is revealing who they are interested in etc. However, they do reveal some of their thinking about what they are looking for in players and how they evaluate their needs. I know Matt is not CM but he is our primary recruiter and I don't see the harm in listening to what he has to say.

Honest question. Why didn't Matt tweet it out himself? Why did he reach out to a fan to mention it? Any idea?

It was indeed Matt’s idea. He was not courted to do this. Self serving? Who knows. Let’s see how it turns out.

I agree let’s see how it turns out. I can’t believe it’s causing such a big deal. He is willing to do it, that’s great. Even if it is self serving I don’t care. How it’s asked who cares. As of now from what we see he is basically the only one pounding the pavement daily. I would let it be known that I am busting my ass while others are sitting on their ass. So if the time comes and the staff gets let go he can atleast say I did my job.

Why does it matter? Just go and ask away.

It matters to me and I'm entitled to pose the question :)

Matt has more followers than the person who asked it. If you want reach logic says the person with the bigger reach. Asking an honest question of why use an intermediary.

I have no desire to attend but for those who do, I wish them the best.

I don’t follow twitter regularly, but maye Matt has a regular rap with this fan and posed the question to test the waters?
But no matter, by doing that and not being slapped down—which maybe is what Matt was nervous about—it’s an open possibility.
I applaud it.
Urge people to attend it in good faith, not to attack, but be respectful and simply to know about the Staff’s strategy and how they view and are planning for the future.
Many questions on numerous topics can be asked using that template.
Thank you Matt for raising it with a fan.
I’m going.

I think that it is a good idea.

But the problem is that our majority of fans are older than 45 and don´t use twitter. :)
