STONY BROOK, Tue., Nov. 7, 7p, FS-1

My thoughts…

Very easy opponent but also the first game with a completely overhauled roster...so can't go too crazy in either direction.

Jenkins - Good playmaker, great energy on both ends, and very athletic. 6 turnovers are way too much, though, and he had another 3-4 dribbles around his chin that would have been steals against better competition. I liked his drive and kick to the corner the most...he's got a good pull-up jumper off the pick and roll as well.

Ledlum - Unreal offensive rebounding. He bumbles with ball on his drives, so the new charge rule will really help him. He's just got to pick his spots. He's probably best at 28 MPG so he gets enough rest to stay active. He had some slow feet on the defensive glass. Shot looks good when he's set. I like him posting up down low...would like it better if he passed out of it.

Alleyne - Best shot of the night was an inside-out to Alleyne for a set three. That's going to be one of the best shots this team has all season. His defense was steady as can be. He needs more shots. I feel like Soriano and Ledlum posting up will give him and Dingle space all year if they are willing to pass it back out.

Taylor- Very good glue guy. Quick feet and good size to help Ledlum on the defensive glass. Very good defensive potential. If he could just add some finishing moves around the basket he could be really good.

Conway - I thought he looked good. He wasn't playing with any confidence early. He got some swagger with the three on the dish from Jenkins. His defense is fine even though he was beaten badly once. He's much more athletic that Dunlap.

Wilcher - Insanely quick feet on defense. He really stands out. A little too active with his hands, but that's what freshmen do early. Very high defensive potential. The college game is moving a little too fast for him on offense right now, but that's to be expected.

Dingle - Looks like he needs some conditioning, but he's 10x as skilled as anyone else we have on offense besides Luis. He's got to touch the ball more and we have to set him up for shots. We need 20+ from him against Michigan, so Ledlum and Jenkins need to take a step back there.

Dunlap and Davis have the longest arms I've seen in a while. Almost Kevin McHale proportions.

Soriano is so steady on both sides...no wasted movements, but he's got some heavy feet. He was beaten vertically a lot tonight on the glass by the SB big man. I don't mind him taking that open 15 footer or a wide open 3 like that first one he hit. He's got a decent drive as well when he picks his spots.

I completely disagree on Ludlum. I have him at 29 mpg :)

Nice to get to see the guys play, and play pretty well. Long season ahead against much better competition, so too soon to get tournament fever. Depth is nice, but it's going to be the core group of Joel, Dingle, Ledlum, and Jenkins, and most likely a healthy R.J., with important minutes for Taylor and Alleyne. It's only one game, but it will take a while for the freshman to get comfortable with Pitino's system and Big East level competition.

We need Joel to play a lot of minutes, and need to find Jenkins a solid back-up. Liked Daniss' ability to create and score, but he is a little loose with the basketball. 6 turnovers against S.B. doesn't bode well. Having a St. John's team with a number of decent 3 point shooters is a welcome change. We have all been calling for more basketball players and less pure athletes, and we have that this season. I don't see the explosive athelticism of many past teams, but that's OK. Going to be an interesting season that should result with a better product in February than November. That's something that has been missing for this program for quite a while.

Pitino coached more on the sidelines in one half than CMA did all last season.

This was a good first test. SB had a lot of fight in them. I think we had more TO's than they did.

As for gauging the players and their respective roles at this point, I think all will make meaningful contributions at one time or another this season.
