Steve Lavin Update

MF said "I believe and we'll never know". Not exactly a definitive statement or stating fact. Plus MF is usually full of sh*t!

Lavin was always nice and respectful. When you talked to him he made you feel like the only person in the room.

I almost agree with you. Lavin was always nice and respectful. When you talked with him he made you feel like HE was the only person in the room. :)

Lavin did what many thought was impossible - Resurrect a moribund program with 2 NCAA bids in 5 seasons. Still, the bar was much higher than that, and he failed to even come close to entering the post season prepared. At the end, no one felt that those successes were a springboard to elevate the program.

Lavin talks a lot, but I also do not think he cared to develop the type of relationships across the university that would make people comfortable with him. Most say he wasn't even around enough to do that, even within the athletic department. He's not a bad guy, far from it. At the end of the day, he didn't even leave a foundation on which the next guy could build on, and that will be part of his legacy here as well.

You need a coach who is engaging with alumni and fans. It is called FUNDRAISING, I am not going to give money to arrogant, disrespectful person. IF you are a coach you need to do both.

Jay Wright is perfect at it just name a coach. You need to be able to interact with fans and alumni. Having an attitude towards people is just going to rub them the wrong way.

Do you think Lavin was a highly visible part of fundraising? He wasn't. At his final President's dinner, he sat quietly at his table, and didn't work the crowd one bit - an obligatory appearance. At Carnesecca/Kaiser birthday, he wasn't present - a prior obligation (what could be more important to interact with former players and alumni for the school paying you $2 million per?).

You are right about Jay Wright. He speaks to incoming freshmen at orientation. He is the keynote speaker each year at the senior breakfast. He engages and gets to know students by name on campus. He is a visible part of fundraising campaigns. He teaches in the school of continuing ed. I'd like to see Mullin take on some of these roles. But one thing you are missing is that Mullin immediately went on a goodwill tour of NYC, present at sporting events, throwing out first balls, hitting all the gyms and renewing relationships with programs that Lavin ignored. He will be mobbed at alumni and athletic department events, but if you get the chance to engage him, you will find him as open and honest as Jay Wright, You won't ever confuse the two, because Wright is the naturally more engaging - but Mullin is every bit as respectful, open, and eager to interact with fans.

Let's end this discussion. Lavin is a good person who is gone for a reason. Mullin is a good person as well. Hopefully you'll get a chance to know him if he is here for the next 15-20 years - that would mean success for our program and the best possible outcome for the school.

Have people forgotten Jarvis?

Mike Francessa stated that Lavin was being re-upped until Mullin called for the job.

Mike's "source" on this is likely someone who used to post on this forum but no longer does after he got called out. ;)

Wow, Mullin in for a rough year on here. Thought honeymoon would at least last to first game.

Lavin was not the worst coach or the best coach we have had but either way he is gone, so I think we should move forward. Mullin is basically the face of the program and has been since 1982. Posters bitching already are clearly crazy! People get way to wrapped up on our FORMER coaches.

BTW Norm stunk ;)

Excellent post---except for the gratuitous shot at Norm. We should move on from doing that too.

Was a joke, but honestly statute of limitations is not up yet on the pain he inflicted on both my eyes and the game of basketball. He is really the only former coach that still merits scorn.

I'll challenge that last line...

I would say Norm and Steve represented SJU well and improved the program from where they started. Did either do an exceptional job? No. But did they move us forward? I'd say yes.

The only coach that still merits scorn is Jarvis. Guy absolutely trashed SJU hoops and left it in a stinking mess that we're still trying to fix.

What/who are you referring to?

"Google" it. :)

Nothing comes up, what should be my search terms?

Don't open a detective agency. :)
It is right before you. No more clues.

Ah man I got trolled. Mr. Google.

Who was he?

Norm and Steve's 11 year joint venture left a barren program. Norm left Steve a full squad, giving him time to bring in some players. When Steve was hired he was thought to be a professional coach, so more of the onus would fall on him. Coach Mullin could be considered a risky hire, but he's special so we all feel good about him being back.

Every coach except Norm brought at least one year of enjoyment to the table. Mullin brought me four as a player so he gets a pass from me no matter what happens going forward.

WASJU's new core math to determine SJU coach's worth.

NCAA appearance =+2
Sweet 16 =+3
Elite 8=+4
Final Four=+5
Nit=+1
NIT Title=+2
No tourney=-2
Putting program on probation=-10

Louie +45
Mahoney -1
Fran 0
Jarvis -2
Norm -9
Lavin +4

I had to work today and was very bored!!!!
