Any idea when that is over?
then get used to yearly 10th place finishes after this season.
Get used to? Lol... we compete for that almost every season.

How could an AAU season possibly take precedence over a D1 college gig? Makes not much sense to me. If he was coming on board, an assistant would coach the AAU season out.

End of July. August would be a fair gauge imo, but we’ll see.

Obviously Rice would have committed by now if offered. Surmise he is just finishing Rio season, since a firm offer has not materialized yet. I admire his patience, but also realize he does not have any other offers relatively close to home. Staff including Mullin have hosted him a lot over past year & one AC in particular would be really happy if he joined staff. Chris ultimately will make his choice & I’ll live with that.

Let's also be honest with ourselves as to why we want him. We want him because he'll theoretically give us a better shot with 3 specific '19 recruits. There may be some other peripheral benefits, but if we achieve the success I think we are all hoping for, he would likely be gone after 1-2 years for a head coaching gig. Or maybe he'd take the torch here?

How can we make an offer with an AD? Who has the sign off? Gempesaw?

I think Chris signs off in Gempesaw’s hires.:)

Actually Joe Oliva, the AD’s boss would do so

Actually, I don't think it's been expressed here too much that the reason we would want him is to tap into the NJ pipeline of recruits, or specifically '19 recruits. I do think we need help recruiting. I don't think we necessarily need an X's and O's guy, as St. Jean has progressed very nicely. I think the roster (and defections) the past 3 seasons (and the 5 before that) has been more of an issue than coaching deficiencies.

If the reason is to bolster recruiting efforts I'm all in if Rice can help deliver players.

I do think his tenure here would be short lived - erase the baggage he is carrying now, be part of a winning season or two as the program is restored, and then someone would take a shot on giving him a hc position.

Rice fills two specific and mutually exclusive voids on our staff
He would certainly give us a better shot at high level recruits
He also had head coaching experience and is thought to be a good x and o guy
Was highly thought of when he coached at Robert Morris before Rutgers
His enthusiasm would also provide some needed energy into the program
I hope that CM moves Mitch into an advisor role and hires Rice in his stead

Although team defense improved last year imo, I think Rice could help build upon that success.
if nothing then, Mullin's toast.
This is not a Tiny situation. Can he help us with Lewis and other major '19 recruits? Sure, but I don't think anyone's expecting them to commit either way. Rice will be a huge upgrade helping us with development and coaching and has tons of experience (something no one else has really). He wouldn't just help us with the '19 recruits, he would help us every cycle especially with the NJ recruits. With Tiny, he was used to get Whitehead then they got rid of him. I would assume we keep Rice even if he doesn't get Lewis for us if hired since he's a real coach. I don't see Rice as some type of savior...he's simply a major upgrade based on what we have which is zero experience with our coaches and Matt is fed up being the only recruiter. If Mullin doesn't hire any help I wouldn't expect Matt to take it for too long before leaving. We need to start making decisions that are obvious at other major programs.

By the way I think he meant "toast" referring to ultimate failure and not necessarily being fired. If this doesn't materialize, it's hard for me to see Mullin being successful. If Heron is eligible and Rice comes on board, can we all throw a party somewhere? That would mean the stars aligning for once.

I believe this has been posted before: Team Rio's schedule

July 10-14 UAA III, Atlanta, GA (NCAA Live) (ALL TEAMS)
July 17 Rice 17U JSBL 8pm
July 18-20 Hoop Group Elite II, (NCAA Live) Albright College (ALL PLAYERS)
July 21-22, West Coast Elite 100, (NCAA Live) Los Angeles, California

July 25-27, Live in AC, 17U, Atlantic City (TEAM TBA)
July 25-29, 17U Rice UAA Championships, Las Vegas, Nevada

I thought that we were waiting for Chris to resolve the Mitch issue—which I thought was ‘happening’, and that following the AAU Season, Mike Rice would join the team.
IMO, the Staff needs to be ‘right-sized’ to both be more focused on recruiting, to hone team defense some more, and to inject some energy and spirit into the program.
Since, there’s only “1 choice”...I sure hope ‘he’ is hired and joins.

Completely agree not a Tiny situation. Coach Rice is dynamic and can contribute in any number of ways. My point was more that if we're successful I doubt he'll be here all that long - which would ultimately mean that anything he does to sway the '19 kids would likely be his biggest contribution.

Ive said this before. Lets say we hire Rice, he is very successfull, we get some studs , make the sweet 16 and he leaves to be a head coach somewhere else. We should be so lucky to have such problems.
