St. Thomas Aquinas

I kept thinking during the game that at least some of what was happening reflected rookies learning to move in rhythm to Lovett's penetration, quickness, and passing, and coming to their first game and guess what's not there. Unfortunately for me it has deep de javu traumatic overtones as NYU ranked pre-season #1 in 1964 was notified just before their opening game that their one point guard (Neil O'Neill)was academically ineligible.
As SJU fans we don't have to go back that far. Just think of Sampson, Pelle, Sanchez,Thomas, And ADR. Unfortunately we are veterans of this . Let's hope our luck changes w Lovett.

I miss Lavin.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're being sarcastic.
But suffering through another season of Lavinism isn't something to take lightly.
Personally, I think "I wish Lavin was here" jokes are a step too far.
I wouldn't wish it upon Syracuse or even the Eagles.

So it wasn't really the tie thing.

Just addressing ONE SPECIFIC POINT, those saying it wasn't a game it was an exhibition. What type of exhibition was it? A basketball exhibition? If so, did we put basketball players on the court for a basketball exhibition? If we did they certainly didn't exhibit the playing of basketball. As that putz Lupica would say: that's it and that's all.

U
He didn't do any coaching. Chris St. Jean did the majority of the coaching from what I saw. Mullin kept looking up into the crowd and smiling, consistently looking over at Lou, Mahoney and Rutledge and smiling. Not what I am looking for from my head coach 10 days before the first game.

7 Coaches sitting next to each other, no coaching or teaching to the kids on the bench. That was a complete joke last night. That was beyond embarrassing.

I don't care if he was taking things in 10 days before the season is inexcusable. The coach should be up talking to players.

Buck, I think you're selling zendon short here.

Reality is college ball is a guards game and out best guard did not play.
Our next best two guards were freshmen playing in their first college game and neither is a pg. no Lovett is a recipe for disaster. Not really sure what is hard to understand. If Lovett can't play this season expect to be pressed every game by every team that can. Not sure how that is Mullins fault ? ????
As for him remaining calm again if your team is loosing badly because they can't break a good press or are turning the ball over repeatedly what is coaching going to do ?????
Perhaps the strategy was let the game play out and let's work on the mistakes after? And would it have been productive for Coach Mullin to have pulled a John Chaney or Keady imitation ????? I certainly don't think so. I believe it could have proven far more damaging to the least experienced team in division 1 , since some of you get offended when I have called them the youngest team. The reality is Mussini, Ellison , Williams , Sima, have never played a game of Division 1 ball. Ron M played 1 season , Johnson played 2 seasons ,AA played a few games and Jones has played a few games. We are pathetically inexperienced.
However if you want to know if Coach Mullin can coach , look at CJ as the perfect example. For 3 years he has been an absolute bust and with a new coach he is playing like a stud. Give us a healthy Lovett and some time and we will be fine.

I miss Keady :) Would have liked him and Lavin to have traded places. The Keady of his Purdue days , that is.

Surprised no one mentioned Mrs Lavin?

Question for Mods, I have moved to SCAROLINA but, have kept my EZ Pass..Can I be SCarolinajoe or, remain as currently.

note to posters: only positive comments please, the Sunshine and daily golf have mellowed my outlook.. as well as, NO MORE NY TAXES!

Dinkins is in sc. You and he should hang out

Dink packing as we speak :)

Games like last night are a great reason to bring back the R&P forum. Will divert some of the attention from future clusters#*k games and let everyone argue in a different forum :)

OMFG I think I am watching Mike and Mike and Greenberg is again predicting the end of civilization for the 10 thousandth time. Yes we sucked but its their first game, welcome to college basketball. Boys you are not in high school any more its time to put the big boy pants on If you let these games bother you you will all have ulcers. Let them take their lumps and let them learn. It may not be fun to watch but we are building a foundation here. By next year we will have Ponds and Yakee and some kids with some experience. Have a little patience

BOE, Not sure if you are serious about winning the NCAA with those , Sampson and Harkless? I doubt they would have won more than 2 NCAA games. Lavin's coaching was a big obstacle to overcome and clearly he was near the bottom of his BE Coaching colleagues.

Steve seemed to lose interest after his Cancer treatments and loss of his Father. Plus, he was out of his element here in the East and, it showed.

It was a joke regarding steves assertion of an ncaa championship had those guys stayed. In charlotte before the game i asked him about dlo's health and he launched into a long diatribe that included how much better we would be if both sampson and Harkness were on the team.

Regarding any excuses as to who was or wasnt available for us remember that sta doesnt have a single d1 player and anyone on our roster was recruited higher and should have outplayed them. Its a stinker of a ganecand best flushed and not analyzed.

You ever watch preseason football... etc? Sometimes as a coach you set out one or two specific things to accomplish in these scrimmages that don't count and you are not focused upon the score or even looking pretty. You're using it as something to build on for when they quickly will start to count. As a fan you understand that (hopefully - unless say you are rooting for Joe Montenga) . You'd like to see a W. You'd like to see your stars doing nice things if they are even on the field and you'd really like to see some new guy show some stuff that you weren't expecting. But regardless you know that your team is not putting its best foot forward and unlike our situation where this game might be the biggest game of our opponent's season, in those sports like pre season football, the other team isn't putting its best foot forward either.

If the goal here was to stink up the place and expose our glaring weaknesses, mission accomplished!

Look at the Turnovers in the Red/White then that coupled with a well executed press and we were toast especially sans Lovett. Some of those T/Os were completely inexcusable at any level past say 4th grade CYO especially repeating them. They weren't ready and they got rattled almost immediately. At least Sima's FT form looked a little better like he had worked on it and gotten some instruction.
Now they have some game tape. Let's see how they use it and respond to the punch in the gut.

I DID NOT SEE THE GAME BUT WAS WONDERING HOW WE DID AT THE LINE

The way I see it this is an absolute win-win.

Either we're going to improve (you know, after the first exhibition without our best player and two rotation players where 80% of the team was stepping on a college court for the first time) and make our way to a respectable record with momentum on and off the court.

OR

We're going to struggle and this is going to become the most entertaining place on the Internet. This is a fanbase that was split on Norm Roberts. NORM ROBERTS! And now we're going to bring home the best player in program history, whose era a majority of the core fanbase understandably identifies with as the best time in their SJU if not sport fandom career, as coach and introduce some controversy?

They'll be hundreds of thousands of words typed debating, only to be rendered completley irrelevant when we charge at 20 wins and a tournament bid one year from now.

You can already see the undertones in this thread. Going to be great either way :cheer:

As someone else posted, SJU's 3 best players (Lovett, Yakwe, and Owens) are not eligible right now, 2 of his 3 most experienced players (Johnson and Mvouika) were D1 bench players who haven't played in 2 years as both are coming back from injuries.

Owens looked pretty good in the red white game but I wouldn't call him 1 of our 3 best players. Yawke also has a lot of potential but I would imagine Lovett, Johnson and Mussini are probably our top 3. I think Johnson will be fine and just had an off night.

Before we criticize Mullins coaching lets give him a few more games at least. This is gonna be a tough season. Everyone knew that. I want to see hunger coming out next game.

Fair enough

Who was the best player?
1. Chris Mullin
2. Chris Mullins
3. Chris Mullen

I never saw the other two play so I am going to go with Mullin. In fact I think Mullin was the 2nd best player in the BE right behind Patrick Ewings

There is a song by Jesse Winchester that comes to mind about this upcoming season especially in light of the STAC game the other night, it has a few lines that go something like this:

It takes patience to walk on
And spirit to run
But nothing to pity yourself
Because it's dangerous fun

This season those lines might be apropos.

Considering the word FUN is in there I wonder if FUN was being serious in his post in this topic. I think somebody else stole his moniker and posted!
