St. Thomas Aquinas

I know beast mentioned it, but you guys need to realize that it takes time to become comfortable on the sidelines. As much improvement as we will see from this completely new team, im sure there will be just as much improvement from Chris. You dont just know how to work the refs, or to demand respect in the huddle, or when to use timeouts, how to make adjustments on the fly. It seemed to me (through my computer screen) that Chris felt a little awkward, all eyes were on him and he might have got stuck. This thread will be a great one to look back at.

Just playing devils advocate here (I know CM can do no wrong in many eyes on here) but perhaps it was not the brightest decision for a gravely struggling program to hire someone with no experience coaching, zero, and will struggle and have to learn how to coach opposed to someone who has been in this situation before. At the very least there should have been a highly regarded experienced coach hired as an assistant for in game coaching.

Obviously hiring Mullin was a risk. But after one exhibition game I'm not ready to say it wasn't a bright decision. The reality of the situation is we won't know if this decision will work or not for some time. How long until we can start making judgments, that's up for debate, but I can say with 100% confidence we can't make that judgment in November of year 1.

My read on this debacle is as follows: opening night jitters and lack of preparedness for their full court press caused panic and a rapidly spiraling plunge in confidence. It reminded me of a similar embarrassing loss to Georgetown many years ago when we just couldn't get out of the gate. That being said, I'm really disappointed in what I saw from some of our more experienced players, especially Williams and Johnson. The next game should tell us a lot.

Positives- Jones looks like the confident kid he was the first 5 games of his career, realistically I think he should have got a touch every time down the court. . Ive always seen his talent, its good that he apparently is back to recognizing it himself. Mussini does a good job of not showing the ball to the defender, his shot is good but he NEEDS Lovett to be truly effective. Ellison had a rough game but I love his skills and physical package.

Negatives- A lot. Williams is the biggest disappointment to me. Was hoping for so much more. Runs, passes, and even his shot looks similar to obekpa. And I never wanted to see obekpa do anything other than block a shot again.

Anyone else worried Mase is veering towards Carmine -Phil Greene territory with Jones?
Should we organize an intervention?

Haha youre late on this WASJU. Jones has been my man since day one. I understand he is far from great but he has skills that can be used if put in the right spots. Plus ive got a soft spot for guys who seemingly have their confidence taking away from them. You could never say that was the case for Phil.

I miss Keady :) Would have liked him and Lavin to have traded places. The Keady of his Purdue days , that is.

Surprised no one mentioned Mrs Lavin?

Question for Mods, I have moved to SCAROLINA but, have kept my EZ Pass..Can I be SCarolinajoe or, remain as currently.

note to posters: only positive comments please, the Sunshine and daily golf have mellowed my outlook.. as well as, NO MORE NY TAXES!

This was a long term hire. Simply put. My best bet is that the Chris we see on the sideline (much like the team we have) a few months from now will look much much different then the one we saw last night.

First call Francesa took today was from a Johnnies fan, asking if Mike was concerned about Mullin's coaching after last nights game. Good grief.

I realize this may be a shock to all the basketball savants and HOF coaches masquerading here as SJU basketball fans but I have to believe Mullin and co. were rightfully using this game to get a FIRST real gauge on where they were and not treating the 1st exhibition as a win or die type situation worthy of a Bobby Gonzalez meltdown. Yeah, Mullin was a deer in the headlights, so nervous he forgot everything he ever knew about basketball, couldn't think enough to adjust in the middle of the game to change offenses and defenses, although maybe he would have if he knew he was going to presented with a Doc Butler War and Peace dissertation on the state of Chis Mullin's coaching career after his 1st exhibition game. As someone else posted, SJU's 3 best players (Lovett, Yakwe, and Owens) are not eligible right now, 2 of his 3 most experienced players (Johnson and Mvouika) were D1 bench players who haven't played in 2 years as both are coming back from injuries. Another of the hopefully key pieces, Williams, has been hurt and therefore is out of basketball shape. Everyone else, excepting Christian Jones who played pretty well, were freshmen seeing their FIRST college action. PANIC TIME...............................................

Do I get some kind of special award for my milestone? Like the lamp the Dad from A Christmas story got?

Boy, Darren McGavin loved that Lamp! Too bad Ralphie, of course, shot his eye out as soon as he got his Red Ryder BB GUN. And, had that scene led around with a dog and cane and glasses. Iconic Movie.. Right up there with National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

Thanks for the thoughtful response kid. I questioned Mulliin's hire from the start but 1 exhibition game is too early to be jumping off any bridges. The staff has to learn how to coach and drill a college team. No one except Barry has really done that and Barry's results at Manhattan weren't anything to write home about. But they do have to learn how to do it. Recruiting is tough , even for bulldogs and hall-of-famers, if the players don't think they are going to win and improve. Hopefully progress will be steady.

Oh, and since my karma sux, You can take your thumb out of my ass any time now, Carmine.

Over? Did you say 'over?' Nothing is over until we decide it is! Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor? Hell, no!

Simply stated, it ain't over yet, let things play out. It was our first exhibition game.

By the way, Animal House is the greatest movie of all time. The uncut version, definitely.

He didn't do any coaching. Chris St. Jean did the majority of the coaching from what I saw. Mullin kept looking up into the crowd and smiling, consistently looking over at Lou, Mahoney and Rutledge and smiling. Not what I am looking for from my head coach 10 days before the first game.

7 Coaches sitting next to each other, no coaching or teaching to the kids on the bench. That was a complete joke last night. That was beyond embarrassing.

I don't care if he was taking things in 10 days before the season is inexcusable. The coach should be up talking to players.

They lost by 30 to a D2 school, what did you want him to do? Pull his players aside and instruct them to be better basketball players?

How about talk to them when somebody consistently jumped in the air with nowhere to throw the ball. It is called COACHING! Instead of the kid making the same mistake multiple times pull him aside and say something to him.

Mussini and Willimas having words with each other on plays it was just embarrassing.

Tough business to pick up in your 50's.........

Maybe because I am younger didn't see Mullin play I am not in aw of everything does. I just look at him as a coach and well you know what he looked piss poor last night.

I would hate to see how some of you people behave during a real crisis.

Be careful, remember what happened to Chip when he tried to tell the people at the Faber homecoming parade to stay calm. I think it is best to just get out of the way of the crazy people.

FWIW any Animal house reference gets a + karma and a "thank you" from me

You can get your thumb out of my ass anytime now.
