St. Thomas Aquinas

How about talk to them when somebody consistently jumped in the air with nowhere to throw the ball. It is called COACHING! Instead of the kid making the same mistake multiple times pull him aside and say something to him.

Mussini and Willimas having words with each other on plays it was just embarrassing.

Tough business to pick up in your 50's.........

Maybe because I am younger didn't see Mullin play I am not in aw of everything does. I just look at him as a coach and well you know what he looked piss poor last night.

What coach is demonstrative in coaching during games? Those photo op coaching moments that Lavin was famous for were BS. Games, exhibition or not are not the place for that. Practice and film sessions, not during games.

I miss Keady :) Would have liked him and Lavin to have traded places. The Keady of his Purdue days , that is.

Surprised no one mentioned Mrs Lavin?

Question for Mods, I have moved to SCAROLINA but, have kept my EZ Pass..Can I be SCarolinajoe or, remain as currently.

note to posters: only positive comments please, the Sunshine and daily golf have mellowed my outlook.. as well as, NO MORE NY TAXES!

But big, big mosquitos.

No recruit is coming here because of our tradition of recent success.

They're coming because Mullin and Richmond are Hall of Famers, and we can offer a ton of playing time.
Going 0-30 wouldnt change that.

I wouldn't be so sure about that!

He didn't do any coaching. Chris St. Jean did the majority of the coaching from what I saw. Mullin kept looking up into the crowd and smiling, consistently looking over at Lou, Mahoney and Rutledge and smiling. Not what I am looking for from my head coach 10 days before the first game.

7 Coaches sitting next to each other, no coaching or teaching to the kids on the bench. That was a complete joke last night. That was beyond embarrassing.

I don't care if he was taking things in 10 days before the season is inexcusable. The coach should be up talking to players.

Nasty is right on! I was at the game two rows behind CM and I saw Chris look up in the direction of Louie on at least 2 occasions! Listen nobody is a bigger fan of CM than I, and nobody wants to see him succeed more than me, but to say that I am a bit concerned is an understatement! I just got the impression that he was completely overwhelmed. Nasty is 100% correct saying that St Jean did most of the coaching. And as far as Slice is concerned, he had the look as to say "what did I do!"
Of course it is way too early to pass judgement on both our coach as well as the players, but I had anticipated a better showing from both parties! Let's hope for the best!

First call Francesa took today was from a Johnnies fan, asking if Mike was concerned about Mullin's coaching after last nights game. Good grief.

You called him?

Think its early to panic. I think Mullins inexperience is showing but I think he has a high ceiling and will figure it out quickly.

If they lose to Wagner and UMBC then forget about Alkins or Thon....or even Bashir. Then it would be time to panic and maybe meet up at the GW bridge for a group suicide jump
But I think Mullin has a high b-ball IQ and will figure it out very quickly. Even highly talented people can stumble out of the gate at first if doing something for the very first time.

You can bet that last night's outcome and way we lost is in their head, or will be. Not good. And if you think the outcome of games have no effect on TOP recruits that we are chasing, then take another sip of the kool aid.

it is way too early to pass judgement on our coach

That is a bold statement. After all, Mullins has been head coach for nearly six months and has more than 39 minutes of game experience behind him already. Still, I agree that it is impossible that Coach Mullins just rolled the balls out and allowed his 11 new players to get their feet wet while participating in a completely new experience to all of them, especially considering that two of them had played together before and one of those was coveted recruit Amir Amiroviovich. It is much more likely that Mullins just doesn't know too much about basketball and was completely overwhelmed by the idea of following in the footsteps of of giants such as Mike Jarvis and Norm Roberts. Hence the deer in the brake lights look and all the smiling and so forth. Not to mention Mitch Richmond, why is he even on the bench when more experienced head coaches such as Tom Pecora and Tim Welsh were available. I only hope that when the search committee convenes in December that they don't make another disastrous decision, because long time season ticket holders such as myself have had it up to here.

Hilarious thread to start the season.

It is funny that so many of you preached "patience" with ex-SJU Coach Lavin and now we are seeing Chris Mullin being killed after one game that doesnt even count.

Just a reminder for all of those who forgot - ex-SJU coach Lavin left the program in a state of total shambles-which is the equivalent of an expansion franchise in its first year in professional sports.

Not only has CM and the staff hurried to put together a team of all new players with the exception of a few stragglers left from the ex-SJU coach Lavin regime, he has also repaired the tarnished image in the local HS community which was all Lavin's doing

St John's has a roster with virtually no returning players because ex-SJU coach Lavin failed to recruit players over his last two years, not CM. The staff is working tirelessly and progress is being made - even the biggest critic should agree that CM gets this year. It is an utter embarrassment what ex-SJU coach Lavin left behind and unfortunately it may take a little longer than we would have liked to get the smell out, but once the dust settles i think this staff will have great, great success at SJU and every SJU fan will be proud of the program and staff that leads it.

Everyone chill...its one game that doesnt count in a season we have all pretty much chalked up as a rebuilding year.

Every new coach is going to have his struggles and should at least have 1 year of leniency to get some of their own recruits in and to get their feet wet and CM is no different there. However, my frustration and I'm assuming others' frustrations are rooted in the way last night specifically panned out. Lack of any cohesiveness, no organization, players not getting along, and coach not doing anything to string together at least a few consecutive plays of solid basketball. Oh not to mention it was a D-II program and we looked like a CYO team.

A new coach certainly calls for patience and understanding, however, a performance like last night, on all cylinders both players and coaches, is unacceptable.

Wow at this rate bet the under for the first Fire Mullin thread. Although if I were betting title of thread will be Fire Mullins or Mullen

It was not a game, it was an exhibition. No reason to go Chicken Little. Embarrassing outcome (just about every minute of it) but won't affect RPI or anything else other than the choice of the team to learn from it and build off of it - or be losers. Check Sima's latest tweet.

I thought the Robert Morris performance was the worst in history and still do. Those were experienced guys that had been together for years that just wussed like spoiled children. This Aquinas "game" was the difference between a team that played like a team and a group of inexperienced guys coupled with more experienced guys who have been out of ball for a year or more led by a completely new coaching staff. It will take time.

That was one of the more painful things I've watched but I am still grateful for this team and coaching staff.

Why does this matter? If we win 10 games this season I won't give a crap. Take the long view people, I want a final 4 in the next five years and believe we have the people in place to take us there.

Don't have time to look through 24 pages of posts but has anyone here blamed Coach Roberts yet this loss.?
Aside from that, Coach Mullin was handed a crap sandwich, not as bad as Norm but bad, when he took the job. He has big shoulders and a super reputation that will carry us all out of the hole in time but it is going to be rough for a while. Thomas Aquinas was sensational and we looked surprised. This was disappointing but it was not close to an opener at CA 10 or so years ago when we were schooled by St. Francis of Bklyn. and it counted in the season. This didn't count and it was a learning experience that everyone will forget.
Ten wins this year will merit us a ticker tape parade.

I kept thinking during the game that at least some of what was happening reflected rookies learning to move in rhythm to Lovett's penetration, quickness, and passing, and coming to their first game and guess what's not there. Unfortunately for me it has deep de javu traumatic overtones as NYU ranked pre-season #1 in 1964 was notified just before their opening game that their one point guard (Neil O'Neill)was academically ineligible.

Look at the Turnovers in the Red/White then that coupled with a well executed press and we were toast especially sans Lovett. Some of those T/Os were completely inexcusable at any level past say 4th grade CYO especially repeating them. They weren't ready and they got rattled almost immediately. At least Sima's FT form looked a little better like he had worked on it and gotten some instruction.
Now they have some game tape. Let's see how they use it and respond to the punch in the gut.

I miss Lavin.

I'm going to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume you're being sarcastic.
But suffering through another season of Lavinism isn't something to take lightly.
Personally, I think "I wish Lavin was here" jokes are a step too far.
I wouldn't wish it upon Syracuse or even the Eagles.
