St. Thomas Aquinas

Adonis somewhat reminds me of Hibbert when he first came to G'town. Not many fans were expecting much from him, as he was not in shape and somewhat green.

Both of 'em had/has evident skills.

Agree. Adonis has skills. In time with hard work he will be a solid player.

At one point ADR had four straight nothing but net free throws. I thought when was the last time we had a center do that - or a guard or a forward for that matter? The guy is way better than he was cracked down to be. He ran the floor and showed a low box roll to the basket move that was formidable. He seems to know what he's doing and it's just a matter of getting his legs under him. I think he's a real good pickup who could wind up being one of the better bigs in the BE down the road. The combo of DLo, Sheed, Green and Branch was terrific and Sir Dom contributed mightily as well. When Green and DLo started trading threes we started to look like Nova out there. The chemistry was excellent and I think we have a chance to be good this year. Now if we can sign some kids maybe we can build something going forward.

Ii agree with your assessment, bobre. The most enjoyable part of the game for me was when we had the 4 guards and Dom on the floor. Theball movement ws excellent and it led towide open 3's. Obviously, that might not be as effective against bigger opponents (especially on the defensive end) but hopefully it gave Briscoe a sense of what the offense might look like with him on the court.

Adonis looks very very raw and not ready in any single way to play. Just terrible right now. He should definitely be redshirted.

Amar on the other hand looks a little lost, but he's pretty fluid and long. He needs to learn how to use his hands better and be more aggressive and involved (especially defensively), but that will come with time.

Sorry, we don't have time this year.

I don't know what Save the Hero is talking about. Adonis is one of the most skilled freshmen centers in the country. I don't want to give the CTK coach any props after his immature attack of Lavin on twitter, but the kid is coached up and fundamentally sound. You can tell just by the way he holds the ball.

His problem is that he is fat. He is so out of shape that he can't get into a proper defensive stance and he plays way too high. It's a shame, but he can easily drop 20 pounds by the start of the conference games, and he could be down 40 by the Big East tournament. That could make all the difference.

Last year, there were points of nearly every game where our bigs were being pushed around like they were on ice skates. GG, for his great build, had no functional lower body strength. ADR would have been huge to stop that bleeding and could be this year.
There was a point where we had the biggest team on the floor I've ever seen at St. Johns: 6'3 Brach 6'3 Harrison 6'6 Pointer 6'9 Alibegovic 7'0 ADR

I did not see the game, but it seems to me that ADR is exactly as he was cracked up to be. Fundamentally sound but athletically very questionable. He was very well coached in High School, in addition to being pushed very hard by his coach. Lets see how he keeps up against a higher level of comp before we start labeling him with high expectations.

If he had gotten down to 265, 270 before the season, he would have pushed Obekpa to PF and gotten as many minutes as his lungs would allow.

He still may, but his lungs currently allow for a lot fewer minutes.

He has unique skills for a big man, and could be the X factor for us if he could just drop the weight.

It sure would be nice to have a big man at St. John's who really makes the opposing center work on the defensive end.

He's a center on a basketball team, not a jockey. It's about time we got one of these huge guys rather than watching them destroy us. This kid should continue working hard in practice and eating everything in site.

I actually can't tell if you are being serious or not, but when was the last time you saw a 380-pound center who was effective for three minutes, much less 30?

The kid will drop dead on the court if he eats whatever he wants.

He was playing stronger the longer he stayed on the court. He took a while to warm up and was hustling till the end. His weight is not an issue - its an asset. He just needs more court time to gain his legs and learn where to position himself on D.

He's not going to turn into Jack Lalanne.

I don't know if anyone's mentioned this yet, but I was intrigued by our out-of-shape freshman center who scored some points during the later half of a blowout against a d2 squad.

Let's talk about this some more.

I can't tell if you are being serious. There is no advantage to having fat on your body in basketball. If he was 320 of muscle...it's a different story. If he was a high school wrelster, he'd likely be able to certify for the 215 weight class. As he is right now, he can't even get low. He needs to lose 20 pounds immediately. The kid can play. He is very skilled and there is something really likable about him.

We were all scared that he didn't get any time last scrimmage and we all seem to be pleasantly surpised by what he gave us this weekend. I know I am. I feel much better knowing he can give us 2-3 minutes at a clip here and there. Great touch on him...loved the mini jump hook. That is COMPLETELY indefensible coming from him--wouldn't be a bad set play to throw in a few times a game after a stoppage of play.

FWIW, he did hustle his arse up and down the court at a respectable pace, but that is not where his conditioning is the bigggest issue. He took a lot of shortcuts on D in the half court...bad habits like standing up straight...looking strained holding his arms up...slow rotations, etc.

He called Lavin a liar. I don't have the link as I am not on twitter. Someone did post it on here, though.
