St. Thomas Aquinas

Adonis looks very very raw and not ready in any single way to play. Just terrible right now. He should definitely be redshirted.

Amar on the other hand looks a little lost, but he's pretty fluid and long. He needs to learn how to use his hands better and be more aggressive and involved (especially defensively), but that will come with time.

Sorry, we don't have time this year.

I don't know what Save the Hero is talking about. Adonis is one of the most skilled freshmen centers in the country. I don't want to give the CTK coach any props after his immature attack of Lavin on twitter, but the kid is coached up and fundamentally sound. You can tell just by the way he holds the ball.

His problem is that he is fat. He is so out of shape that he can't get into a proper defensive stance and he plays way too high. It's a shame, but he can easily drop 20 pounds by the start of the conference games, and he could be down 40 by the Big East tournament. That could make all the difference.

Last year, there were points of nearly every game where our bigs were being pushed around like they were on ice skates. GG, for his great build, had no functional lower body strength. ADR would have been huge to stop that bleeding and could be this year.
There was a point where we had the biggest team on the floor I've ever seen at St. Johns: 6'3 Brach 6'3 Harrison 6'6 Pointer 6'9 Alibegovic 7'0 ADR

What did Arbitello say about Lavin on twitter? I missed it.

He called Lavin a liar. I don't have the link as I am not on twitter. Someone did post it on here, though.

That was during the first half and was the first game action, I got to see of ADR. His footwork was much sloppier than in the second, where he showed a lot more polish. I agree his problem right now revolves around his weight.

Couple of thoughts from Saturday:

1. D'Angelo Harrison is a warrior. It doesn't matter if it's a D2 exhibition or Duke, he comes to play every second in every facet of the game. 7 offensive rebounds is about nothing more than elite effort. Having trimmed down, increased his athleticism, and with his skillset he's starting to remind me of Randy Foye - a 3/4 mentality in a guard's body with guard skills. That's a really good thing for us.

2. You don't always appreciate what you have, and that is going to be the case with Sampson/Sanchez. Imperfect as they were, we - of all programs - are in no position to be losing not one but two 6'9" forwards with skills, mobility, and length. We are very fragile up front this year. Forget injury, if Obekpa gets into foul trouble - which you can bet is going to be high priority in every opposing game plan - we are going to have some trouble.

3. Phil Greene is a spot up jump shooter - and has turned into an excellent one at that. He needs to focus on being that and little more on offense. When he's taking low percentage pull-up 15-17 footers, having tunnel vision on the break, and dribbling east/west 25+ feet from the basket it cuts into his productivity as a shooter. Get to a spot and wait for Branch and Sheed to find you. Confusion about his role on offense is a dangerous thing for this team.

4. There is no time when our offense is more "hard to guard" then when Sheed has the ball in the mid post with his back to the basket. He's a tough cover for any guard 1 on 1 there, and if a double gets sent he has the size to pass over the top. I don't see any other set we have right now that forces a defense into a difficult decision just by virtue of the set itself . It needs to become a routine part of the offense, not an every now and again approach.

Agree on all points, but especially your 3rd. Greene is a senior, and he is still very confused about his role on this team. With players like Sheed, DLo, Dom, and Branch with a slash first mentality, Greene could be forgotten by many defenses if he spots up outside the three point line and get many wide open looks. We will see what happens this year but something tells me we will continue to see more possessions of just a Greene dribble-fest.

Is Arbitello friggin kidding me. I mean you have to have some respect for the success CTK has, but their coaching staff from the top down has a bunch of crusty rugrats. At least LAvin didn't get his job because his predecessor was a pedophile. When one of my kids played in their vaunted AAU program, they played in only 4 tournaments (vs. the typical 7-10) because one of their program directors, an assistant coach at the school, allegedly spent the registration money on groceries - no joke. F this guy Arbitello, seriously. Lavin earns more in a day than this guy earns in a year of coaching CTK, and the dude is just jealous.

This CTK guy seems like higher maintenance than a Mariah Carey concert backstage contract. Next thing he will want red roses in the locker room sent by us after the games

F off

Not condoning what he twitted(or is it twittered?), but I would let my kid play high school ball for Arbitello in a heartbeat. His kids bust their butt every minute of every game(and in practice), and they are all extremely fundamentally sound and well prepared. Trust me when I tell you this, I enjoyed watching the CTK coached team last year far more than I enjoyed watching our team.

I think Adonis has himself in position to really make a name for .himself. He's much more mobile than I expected and handles the ball very well. It's just a matter of time before he gets in shape and starts to do damage regularly. Our set of guards is as good as anyones. They can all guard bigger guys and create matchup problems on offense. On one play DLo got up higher than I've ever seen him.and the league is a definite possibility. My NBA buddy also thinks that Sir Dom has a future at the next level as long as he continues to play "D" the way he can. Jury is still out on Ali Babba but he showed a willingness to stick his nose in there for some scrums. Good to see he's not just a perimeter statue. Jones on the other hand seems gun shy despite all that muscle. Time for him to wake up.and smell the cash available for guys like him. The walkons looked more functional than ever and backcourt fouls will be all but meaningless. It remains to be seen how we'll fare against taller teams but the manpower is there to give them fits all game long. SJU has had a long list of successful 6'4" guard/forwards and plenty of candidates for that role this year. I hope Lavin keeps it fluid and doesn't overthink things this year. Could be just a "go with the hot hand" year and lots of surprises for the competition.

agree with beast here: arbitello was basically coach in training and he has gone above and beyond to protect a convicted pedophile. @CNG_Staszewski @BIGEAST no surprise him and his staff have no respect for NYC. #theylie

Is Arbitello friggin kidding me. I mean you have to have some respect for the success CTK has, but their coaching staff from the top down has a bunch of crusty rugrats. At least LAvin didn't get his job because his predecessor was a pedophile. When one of my kids played in their vaunted AAU program, they played in 4 tournaments because one of their program directors, an assistant coach at the school, allegedly spent the registration money on groceries - no joke. F this guy Arbitello, seriously. Lavin earns more in a day than this guy earns in a year of coaching CTK, and the dude is just jealous.

Arbitello is a POS! I know a few kids that go to CTK and the kids there hate him. Yes, he pushes his players but he is not considered a "nice" guy. You can be both like Jack Curran was.
