St. Mary's Game Thread

Also, some props to Coach tonight. He made the right moves by assigning Dom to Waldow and recognizing some other adjustments. Is he the best coach in college bb? Maybe not, but he's not bad! Good job tonight, Coach.

I also think this team plays better when they press and go on the fast break. I think if they use this strategy, they will win a lot. We saw it last Sunday with Fordham. In my opinion, this is the game strategy to go with.

All I can say is Pointer, Pointer, Pointer, Where would we be without him this year? One thing that kept me screaming at the TV was Obekpa following # 11 out to the top of the key, leaving Sir Dom alone with Waldow underneath. Too many easy baskets for St. Mary's in the first half, nice recovery for the Redmen. We kind of lucked out, especially since Jordan and Greene did not have a great night shooting. Hey, Joey D looked good, have a good feeling he will help out this year. Have to think this surprised everyone based on past post.
This close fought game is a good preparation for Long Beach next week.

That was a hell of a 2nd half. I have stopped posting in game threads because I would have been screaming bloody murder in the 1st half. I'm really starting to buy into this group.

That's for sure, however we were not getting any boards in the first half. One shot and done.

The reason I am happy with this game is that we basically put up a clunker and won. That's different than last year, were if he didn't play out A game we would definitely be an L.

Attendance: 4645. That's a disappointing number.

However, the people who were there (and I'm glad to say I was one of them) were great. That second half, especially when we were coming back, was as loud as I heard CA in a long, long time.

Keys to the 2nd half:
-We need to execute on offense.
-We need to limit our turnovers.
-We need to defend the 3pt shot.
-And we need to rebound the ball.

Key to second half:

Sir Dom!!!

Yeah the crowd was really getting into it and the players were feeding off of it which was good. I know it's close to the holidays but this should have been a sell-out on a Friday night. Also Mike Repole made his first appearance of the season.

Sure sounded loud on TV. Thanks to you and others for making it sound so good.

I was there with my little guy tonight and he was very down at the end of the first half. But, once we started the second half, you could see the energy level rise from our team and then with the crowd. That game was a lot of fun, and I think my son is a believer now.

We sat a few seats over from Looie and saw a bunch of former players. Terrence and Sharif came over, and I didn't realize Jim Harrick was there until I saw one of the posts here.

Not a great display of basketball by our guys, but you can't be on every night, yet this was certainly a gutsy performance and a necessary one to get the W. I love this team.

You can call me a BS'er but at halftime while reading these negative posts. I was just smiling.
I knew we were going to comeback and get this game.

This year will be more special then 2011
Elite8 Special? Well stay tuned.

And to cap off this thread, how about the fact that this game was the topic of another thread for Seton Hall fans. Seems as if they almost have some type of little brother complex with us

Great comeback win! Played and sustained a great defensive effort throughout the game which was key because they could have let their poor offense in the first half effect the D and fallen even further behind. Nice to hear crowd got into it but have to say there are two times when even a ST JOHN'S crowd gets loud and into a game 1) when we make a big comeback 2) when we feel like we are getting screwed by the refs.

In the old, old days (pre 1985 even), this would have been a classic this-is-how-we-do-it win. Last five minutes at Alumni Hall, the outcome in doubt, and all of a sudden, everyone ups the ante, and we pull one out with superior play.

Last night, the crowd could sense as we pulled even at 41, crawling out of an early 15 point deficit, that our kids had plenty of gas left in the tank, and that St. Mary's was fading. Others have mentioned Dom's job on Waldow, which is appropriate, but really it was everyone not backing down, whether it be Harrison or Jordan, or anyone on the court. At times a worn down Waldow looked like a wounded bear stumbling towards the basket wildly out of control.

As others have mentioned, the crowd was loud. At the start of the game, the student sections had about 15 or so students behind each basket. By end of game, the 164th street side appeared about 60% full - not bad. Long time fans were on the feet urging our guys on. It isn't hard - they are a likeable group.

My son, who has gone to games with me since he was about 4 or 5, and who is now in his freshman year away at college, came home on Thursday and made his season debut. It added to the win, and he reminded me on the way out that his showing up resulted in a win, but my 3 appearances at his school's football games resulted in losses. I smiled and said, "What are you trying to say?" Special night.

Pointer has gone from one of my least favorite to my favorite player on this team and when we start talking about our players and the NBA he needs to be front and center. Jordan OTOH showed again last night that he is nowhere near ready, after his best game of the year he thrw out a complete dud last night. Also, One of the reasons putting pointer on their big man worked last night is because it allowed Obepka to help out off his man. As others have said JD can be a valuable big man for us, doesn't look like he'll give us anything on the offensive end but if he can play some D, bang the boards and set a good pick that's enough.

I liked seeing Obepka hitting a couple of mid range jumpers. If he can do that with any type of consistency it would be great for us.

I like seeing them go in and he has a nice stroke at about 8-10' but would much prefer to see those shots right under the hoop going in.

Agree Paul, for some reason CO finishes weak at the rim.

And would someone on the coaching staff please tell him to stop leaning back on his free throws? He had perfected his stroke over the summer and it still looks way better but they ain't going in. He needs to just go through the proper mechanics going up with his weight forward instead of back and his free throws will start going in...

Yep, its all about confidence -- which eliminates thinking...I liken it to golf...when you stand over the ball, focus on multiple thoughts and mechanics nothing good happnes...its the same with foul shooting...deep breath and hands to the target

Comebacks like the Looie days...that's what I was thinking...
