St. Mary's Game Thread

Who cares about if your kid is a believer?

I for one care to read it. It was great to see a lot of young families at last nights game having a blast. This program lives off of fans who never went here and who were brought in by fathers or by friends fathers.

Keys to the 2nd half:
-We need to execute on offense.
-We need to limit our turnovers.
-We need to defend the 3pt shot.
-And we need to rebound the ball.

Key to second half:

Sir Dom!!!

OLV has made me a convert. His aggressive play took "Big Waldo" completely out of his game. Gallant, effective effort & clearly a game saver!

Fun, you've become what should have been your greatest fear - irrelevant and utterly boring. There was a time - albeit relatively short - when your rants were somewhat interesting and occasionally funny. That time has passed. I suppose you can take some perverse pride in your ability to be negative in every circumstance, but I, for one, won't be reading it anymore. The act's gotten real, real old.

You can call me a BS'er but at halftime while reading these negative posts. I was just smiling.
I knew we were going to comeback and get this game.

This year will be more special then 2011
Elite8 Special? Well stay tuned.
You were the only fan smiling after the first half. That was one of the worst halves I've ever watched. Fortunately we turned it around. I give Dom the game ball.

Great move putting Dom on big man. Obekpa is a much better help defender, he really struggles guarding guys straight up. Dom played the pick and roll much better and had the quickness to get back to Waldo. What an effort!

Great 2nd half. Joey D will get some quality minutes this year

Real solid game for Dom and thank God again for Dlo's scoring

Very nice win. Now let's take the next

D'Lo is an animal... Great plsyer, leader and it comes out every game. He drew fouls purposefully all day and he orchestrated it impressively. Pointer also was awesome. At 6'5" guarding a 7 ft center the entire second half and didn't give up an inch. He has honed his scoring as well. Much improved player.

Dom played so well. With the expectation of the one fast break where he tried to take it himself he played a close to perfect game. That jump shot under two minutes was huge. Have to admit I was screaming no no no when he was about to take it. Kudos to dom.

What should not be lost on Dom's effort is Lavin's gutsy call to go small on Waldow in the second half, especially after Obekpa fouled out. Shades of 1970 with Willis Reed out, Holzman instead calls on Dave Stallworth and a bevy of small men to guard Chamberlain. Yes, Chamberlain went off in game 6, but the Knicks won game 5, 7 and got their rings.

Credit to Lavin.

If Fun spent more time paying attention he would realize that Gonzaga & St. Mary's are both in the West Coast Conference & not the WAC.

Now back in the North Country after the drive home from Long Island. I'm getting too old for those intense comebacks and question mark endings.
I agree with all the Dom points but I think the biggest surprise was the play of Joey D. He may be the essential defensive big man we needed after losing Thomas before he even started.
I thought he showed exceptional poise and great floor instincts in positioning himself through various defensive sets. He is more than just another body to collect fouls. Granted he didn't show much offense last night but he wasn't asked to do so and had few chances anyway. He is a very pleasant addition even he can stay only for one part of one season. Too bad it appears he will never get to play with his brother for us.
There will be many games ahead in the big East season when we will be glad he can spell Obekpa with strength and positioning.

Impressive gritty comeback win. Showed lots of poise and didn't get rattled. Got to tighten up the defense. Too many uncontested points in the paint for St. Mary.

Well, Mr Fun can be a tad abusive or at least irreverent at times, but his analysis of that particular game was spot on. Let's face it, we were lucky to walk away with a win given our horrible shooting and Sir Dominic's effort notwithstanding, our defense which was helped immensely by St. Mary's lousy offense, all of which Fun pointed out, by the way.

Well I just read another thread and I guess there at least some theory that he can play next year. Hopefully, that's the case, but this year is critical for us, so again, we are a bit deeper after last night,s introduction to him.

Beat I agree that Lavin coached a very good game yesterday, but I'm not sure I'm prepared to anoint him the next Red Holzman ;)

So our defense couldn't stop them in the first half and their offense stopped themselves in the second half? Under that scenario, yes we were lucky, not sure I buy that theory.

Yes our offense struggled most of yesterday, but what team doesn't over the course of the year. Were we luck yesterday, maybe, I would prefer fortunate.

ADR could be using this time productively such as getting into the best shape of his life. Instead he looks heavier every game. WTF

The guy was never funny, annoying is more like it.

His act was always irrelevant. You could see his agenda from day one.

OLV has converted me too. Anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Brian knows he is a glass half full type of person and he was positive on this team before the season started whereas I had no expectations after the whole Keith Thomas thing.

I'm a believer now. Keeping up a great season and maybe doing some damage in the NCAA's would be the best christmas present I could ever get.

These kids deserve it and hopefully we take a lot more teams down in the next couple months

Analyze all you want, but the fact of the matter is that in the first half our shots weren't falling and our defense, especially of Waldow, was weak. In the 2nd half we made the adjustments needed and we won. Not one of our better performances but still we stayed the course and never came apart, as we had done in past years. I can't tell you how much I enjoy the composure these kids exhibit during the tough stretches. I'll take the W and move on.

PS we were 8 pt favs and won by 7. So we pretty much did what was expected.
