St. Mary's Game Thread

Keys to the 2nd half:
-We need to execute on offense.
-We need to limit our turnovers.
-We need to defend the 3pt shot.
-And we need to rebound the ball.

Key to second half:

Sir Dom!!!

OLV has made me a convert. His aggressive play took "Big Waldo" completely out of his game. Gallant, effective effort & clearly a game saver!

OLV has converted me too. Anyone who has had the pleasure of meeting Brian knows he is a glass half full type of person and he was positive on this team before the season started whereas I had no expectations after the whole Keith Thomas thing.

I'm a believer now. Keeping up a great season and maybe doing some damage in the NCAA's would be the best christmas present I could ever get.

These kids deserve it and hopefully we take a lot more teams down in the next couple months

Judging by Paultzman's celebratory high five's in the last minutes of last night's game convinces me that he could probably block one of Dom's driving jams. The second half of last night's game was a lot of fun to watch. It was a good workout for many of us.

Well I just read another thread and I guess there at least some theory that he can play next year. Hopefully, that's the case, but this year is critical for us, so again, we are a bit deeper after last night,s introduction to him.

ADR could be using this time productively such as getting into the best shape of his life. Instead he looks heavier every game. WTF

Last night was the first time I've seen ADR up close since the CHSAA championship game last season. He is unequivocally in no better shape than he was in last season, may be in worse shape. I mentioned this in an earlier post, he was winded on the pre-game lay up line. Huffing and puffing. IMO he is so far from being able to contribute at this level that its pathetic. Frankly, I have my doubts that he will ever be a contributor here, but I sure hope that I'm proven wrong.

Fun, you've become what should have been your greatest fear - irrelevant and utterly boring. There was a time - albeit relatively short - when your rants were somewhat interesting and occasionally funny. That time has passed. I suppose you can take some perverse pride in your ability to be negative in every circumstance, but I, for one, won't be reading it anymore. The act's gotten real, real old.

The guy was never funny, annoying is more like it.

His act was always irrelevant. You could see his agenda from day one.

He only has fun when this team loses.

Analyze all you want, but the fact of the matter is that in the first half our shots weren't falling and our defense, especially of Waldow, was weak. In the 2nd half we made the adjustments needed and we won. Not one of our better performances but still we stayed the course and never came apart, as we had done in past years. I can't tell you how much I enjoy the composure these kids exhibit during the tough stretches. I'll take the W and move on.

PS we were 8 pt favs and won by 7. So we pretty much did what was expected.

Agree, last year's team would have closed the gap in the second half, made it tantalizingly close, but then fail to close out. The mentality of this team is completely different.

Unfortunately ADR's problem is weight distribution. Sixty-five % of his weight is in his ass.

he'd fit right in with us on the board then

To me shot selection is an extremely important factor in staying the course when things arent going your way. The teams of the past few years had horrible shot selection, especially Samson and Sanchez. And it becomes contagious. In spite of the poor shooting % in the first half, the were IMO very few poor shots.

Attendance: 4645. That's a disappointing number.

However, the people who were there (and I'm glad to say I was one of them) were great. That second half, especially when we were coming back, was as loud as I heard CA in a long, long time.

Great crowd considering 3000 dorm students went home for Christmas.

And every single offensive lineman in the NFL.

No reason why the game should not have been sold out. For starters most of the dorm students live within close proximity to the school. Secondly it was a Friday night game, so no excuse that people had to get up for work or school the next day. Thirdly we played one of the better teams that we are going to face at CA. Fourthly we are ranked in the top 20 and there's a buzz. I could go on, but I think you get the point. Game should have been easily sold out.

Arena looked packed to me. There were a few empty seats in the upper corners and in the student section behind the basket but that's about it

One aspect of Lavin's style of coaching that I admire is the manner in which he speaks to his players. After watching so many coaches scream and belittle their players, it is such a pleasant contrast to hear how Lavin addresses his players -- even during emotionally charged moments in a time-out huddle. I watched a little of the Marquette game after the STJ win and was turned off by the way Wojo rips his players. That style of coaching seems far more typical in college sports. I guess each kid responds differently, but I would be more motivated by Lavin's approach. Some things are more important than winning. I hope he is extended.

You can call me a BS'er but at halftime while reading these negative posts. I was just smiling.
I knew we were going to comeback and get this game.

This year will be more special then 2011
Elite8 Special? Well stay tuned.
You were the only fan smiling after the first half. That was one of the worst halves I've ever watched. Fortunately we turned it around. I give Dom the game ball.

Well I know these kids heart. They played like shit in the 1st half, they must have been embarrassed, and I'd bet ya they talked to each other and said lets make this right.
They wasn't going to go out like that, this year that's not who they are.
They might have some periods of bad ball playing, but you better not sleep on them, because at some point in the game they will make their power move.
Though they better come strong against LBS, because a bad start against them could bite them in the ass.
WE ARE...

Lavin made his values perfectly clear when he suspended D'lo. The kids are more important than wins.. more important, even, than an NCAA bid. Five seniors are graduating. Add to that the fact that the kids improve on the court (more than I can remember at St. John's in a looooong time), and I think there's a compelling case to extend him for as long as he wants to stay.

With a raise?

Great win for reasons stated. Crowd seemed louder than previous games and hopefully that continues. You couldn't practice archery in the seats, and that's always a plus.

This team is very entertaining to watch and they have a lot of ability. I truly think we can make a bid at a sweet 16 appearance which we can add to the rafters.

Delarosa definitely adds to this team. Being able to bring an additional big body off the bench to rest obekpa is huge.

And let's give Lavin and his staff credit for getting guys like Pointer, Obekpa and Greene to play the best ball of their college careers. All these guys improved their games this year.

I have been a long time admirer of some of Lavin's actions, but not all, and have quick to point out the positives in the darkest moments of his tenure, drawing ire. That being said, I agree with all but your last sentence. I admire how he handled Dlo, and any number of personnel disciplinary issues, but college coaches who make 2 million per year are paid to win, and need to win to stay in their jobs.
