St John's - Villanova

Just because Greene "got a BE scholarship" doesn't mean he can ball. He is a position-less player. Can't play the 2 and certainly can't play point. Keep watch him zig-zagging around the court mindlessly with his dribble and defending him with little class or honor.

C'mon man. This is a bit harsh. He was our second best player in the last 10 minutes of regulation tonight.

I'm not an X's and O's guy, but isn't Greene's aimless dribbling east & west a function of the half court offense as a whole? Isn't the onus on the 5 players on the court, taken collectively together to create opportunities?

Don't get me wrong, it drives me nuts that Greene dribbles so much, but the half court offense seems to just never get going. I think the ball needs to get into Branch's hands more. His mental mistakes notwithstanding, at least Branch has the ability to the get to the rim. It gets Greene off the ball to be a spot up shooter - which he is pretty good at.

I've repeatedly crapped on our offensive "sets" and our inability to get our best player the ball and even offered ways to change this, more than a few times earlier in this thread, so you're basically agreeing with me.
I think it's ridiculous to just crap on Greene like he sucks or something. He's definitely a DI player and can play a very important role on this team. This year, and the next 2 afterwards.

The team is poorly coached. It's plain as day.

Now that doesn't mean Lavin is a bad head coach. However, it's quite clear that he's not teaching these players how to play as a team. They severely lack fundamentals and situational awareness.

These two statements are pretty damn accurate.

Giving up 98 points to this Villanova team is absolutely insane. We are a glorified AAU showcase team right now. Lavin has consistently shown his inability to make in-game adjustments like the high pick and roll with Arcidiacano tonight and the dribble penetration with Doolin from SF. So sick of always hearing excuses for this team and that starts with Lavin always feeling the need to mention how young we are in media appearances.

Not too shabby for a marginal freshman chucker, eh?

I kept yelling " get that mother chucker " at the tv during the game.Well maybe something that sounded like it

Has anyone ever seen Greene take the ball to the hoop? I'm not talking about his east-west bullshit that he does on every play with the dribble. Him and branch are garbage. Harrison should bounce after this year. Sampson is not ready. Garrett has a lot of heart. But branch and Greene are not big east caliber players.

Please meet me on a court I am 21 never been on any team but grew up in the hood. I would show you who is garbage. If branch and Greene where on the court we would have not reached ot. You sir are a jackass that need to stop be such a hater on a team you are a fan of.

Where exactly is this 'hood' that you speak of?

The heights of eastern Long Island my man. Gordon Heights.

hahah...I live and grew up on Long Island...where the hell is that, man?

Coram.

hahah...I am just busting his nuts, but Coram? I grew up in more of a "hood" than that.

its not a good area. I know three people that got shot within two blocks of my house. there is two sides of coram north of 25 and south of 25. I live in the south side.

I was only kidding man. I grew up in North Babylon. A lot of people think that's a crappy town, but I don't agree with them. And, I played there, too. haha....centuries ago.

Running Greene at PG, questionable substitutions/rotations, poor rebounding and complete lack of Xs & Os.

No such thing as morale victories when you need a Herculean effort from D'Angelo to even hang with a middle of the pack Nova team.

And guys need to really lay off the refs as if that's why we lost the game.

Knew this was coming back to bite me. I've watched a lot of Nova this year. He has had 3 good games so far including tonight. Tonight he was unconscious but we made NO adjustments whatsoever to the same freaking play he was scoring on over and over. He has shown poor decision making, lacks quickness and the inability to beat his man off the dribble. A lot of Nova fans were down on him coming into tonight.

Likes:
1. Greene jump shot shooting - he was solid.
2. Harrison's mostly smart game of drawing fouls and his long range shooting.
3. Branch's ability to get to the rim and create some shots.
4. Amir's smarts around the boards.
5. Overall team hustle, i felt like our guys were gassed at the end - that's a sign they left it all on the court.

Dislikes:
1. Ability to make defensive adjustments on other team's outside shooter.
2. Half court offense. - I don't understand this...but i'm not an Xs and Os guy, so i'm not sure how to critique it. I don't have the vocabulary.
3. Rebounding
4. aimless dribbling by greene - may not be his, or it may be his fault. i'm not sure.

Hopes:
1. Sanchez be good at rebounding and gets eligible quick.
2. Branch gets a little more controlled, but controlled aggressiveness - we need him to create for others and be able to get to the rim. We have no on the team that can do that.
3. Sampson doesn't continue to get into foul trouble like he did - he was eliminated from this game.
4. Obekpa - somehow, please get better rebounding

This team is pathetic. 8-7 almost guaranteed now. All you rose colored shades guys WAKE UP. This team sucks. I don't care how close you come...it's a big fat L against a lower level Nova team with half the talent we have. No way we even sniff the tourney or NIT, and get ready for 20 pt beatdowns at the hands of Cincy and G'Town. Call me negative, but I'm just dead realistic. Maybe next year.

What's with some of you clown posters who get off on calling out other posters who feel optimistic about their team?

Since it'll be next year, then I hope not to see you post on here 'til next year.

Give me ONE reason to be optimistic. I can't stand people who are optimistic for the sake of being optimistic. I am from the realist crowd. Give me reasons to celebrate and believe me I'll be the first one doing so. Give me reasons to want to throw my remote as hard as a Garrett fastball, and I will not give some fake facade as if we are good. The cold hard truth is we are in the basement of the Big East. Not bottom tier, not middle, not upper middle, not top 3, THE BASEMENT. We will still win 1 or 2 games we aren't supposed to, but it will be too late anyway after Cincy and G'Town eat us for dessert. To lose back to back to the same team in OT with Harrison scoring what 36? It's just garbage. Garrett's inexcusable 3 pt foul was the sword to the chest moment for us. We win that game if he doesn't make such a stupid foul. This must look fantastic to Jordan and Lawrence sitting at home. I think it's time to raise the possibility that SJ is just a cursed, snake-bitten team for years now. Throw them in the same pile as the Islanders, Mets, and the Jets. Amazing how with so much talent we are so pathetic and can't ever shut the lid on a team no matter how bad they are.

Bring on the "you are so negative", "stfu", "get off the board", "then stop being a fan", etc. comments, but you know I am correct deep down. I want this team to be great just as bad as the rest of you, but the results do not pan out for us. I wish we could play our own defense so we could score at will like anyone else in the country.

I can't nor will I make you optimistic. That has to come from within. No reason to call folks out because you're miserable. That is like trying to steal someone's glory. There really isn't anything to be optimisitic about at the moment (it's not looking too hot right now), but I'd rather be in the presence of an optimistic person versus a pessimistic person all day long.

If you feel we're not gonna be any good the remainder of the season, and feel you have to spew your cobra-like venom at every, single turn, then maybe you should move on from the board the remainder of the season.

So you want only biased viewpoints like Fox News? Sorry, let me take a step back here. SJ is a premier basketball squad with a plethora of NCAA appearances over the past decade! We were ranked like once in the past decade for a week or 2...that was cool. Hey, we were good in 1985 once! Hmm...we also have a slick looking coach! His wife is smoking. Oh yeah, and our coach wears air force 1's it's awesome! We are absolutely going places guys...top 10 ranking or bust! Elite 8 within reach! GO SJ!

Is that what you would rather? I don't need to be comforted...I am concerned with the truth whether it's something I'm happy about or not. Point blank, I do not feel confident against any team at any level in college with this SJ squad. Zero. You guys said Seton Hall would be bad? They are great. Nova? Supposed to be bad right? Wrong...they are very good record wise. UConn? I thought they were terrible this year...wrong. We are the worst team in the Big East besides MAYBE DePaul. Reckless optimism gets old fast. Let's call this team what it is: BAD.

Learn to comprehend what you read, Mr. Black and White.

How is Seton Hall great? What is this based on? 'Nova has a similar record to the Johnnies. How do we know what UConn is gonna do the remainder of the season? So, those teams are good based on what exactly?

You're either seeing everything as black and white or building strawman arguments.

Personally, I wanted to see Branch back in the game at that time, especially since he was warming up offensively prior to being taken out. However in the first half I didn't understand why he would throw Arc...... to the floor in front of the ref, took away a three point Redmen lead to put Nova up by five.
He gives us another needed offensive player.

It was tough for them to throw additional help toward defending the PG (not even trying to spell his name) when Yarou and Pinkston were killing us inside the end of the 1st half and the first 10 or 12 minutes of the 2nd. We had no answer. We're too small, too young, too thin.

"I can form argument but when I get pissed because so called fans start shitting on their team"- Scott

I think this proves my point. Not going to waste any more of my time with a fool who can't put a sentence together and blindly defends players because he "grew up in the hood"

No I defend players cause you give them one game to prove themselves by you account Jakkar Sampson sucks cause he had a bad first game. How's that for an argument?

Come on, don't tell me a D1 coach is powerless to diagram against stopping a high ball screen.

I never said they were. What's your options? Doubling the shooter. Switching defenders. I have to admit, I didn't get to watch the game on the TV until Branch took the FF, but it just sounded like 15 was hot. Plain and simple.

I was just pointing out it's tough to double up top, when a guy will free up and the ball will eventually find its way to the blocks, where we will be dominated.
I really wish Gift wasn't redshirted. I still don't quite understand this at all.

This team also seems to lack hoops acumen (I guess that can arbitrarily placed under situational awareness, as well).

Welsh has smarts as an announcer as he pointed out our lack of cohesiveness on offense in the first half and our poor rotation on defensing the open three point shot.

There were times (especially, in the first half) when we got out on Arcidiacono and he still nailed the trey. There are times the other team (and players) deserves credit.

Overall, it was a very, winnable game.

At what point do moral victories sitting on our throne in the BE basement not count anymore? By the way I respect you and enjoy your posts even when we don't agree. That question is truly genuine.

Who said anything about moral victories? C'mon! Are you that obtuse? I'm generally never one for moral victories. I'm certainly not one at this stage of the game for our team.

Appreciate the sentiments.

Lavin needs a insider banger to succeed in the BE, not just athletic gazelles. I'm beginning to see why UCLA FANS

got frustrated with him as a Coach..He unquestionably gets very good talent but, so far, it's not enough.

And, fundamentals appear lacking on both, offense/defense. Major breakdowns at crunch time too.

OT tonite showed again a powerlessness to stem the tide of the opponent going on a game deciding run. Those breakdowns have cost us games against Ashville, Murray and Baylor. USF WAS JUST A TEAM DISGRACE!

Against Nova we snatched a loss on a game we should have won in regulation.

Unfortunately Garrett fell for the three point fake to allow Nova to tie the game. Can't fault his hustle though all game.

If we would have won vs. Murray, and USF, then this loss becomes much less painful. Out of the first 3 conference games, this was the one that we absolutely needed to get right off the bat. I'm sick of OT losses, I'm sick of games being decided by 1 or 2 possessions, I'm sick of teams like USF and Asheville blindsiding us. It's not like a lot of other Big East teams are having a rough time like us. It's us, Providence, and DePaul who are struggling. Everyone else is either meeting or exceeding expectations. Why that never happens to us I have no clue. I'm just sick of seeing this team get the short end of the stick. I want to finally be on that other side witnessing the success of SJ, not a disappointment after disappointment year after year. When will this grey cloud pass? This was supposed to be the year we had a coming out party as at least a mid level Big East team. We have done nothing to separate us from the likes of DePaul. The other guys like Pitt, Nova, G'Town, Cuse, etc. make it look so easy. Even though the game was tight you knew Nova was playing better overall and always had an answer for us. If Sanchez comes back and we still crap the bed game after game, then something is seriously, seriously wrong.
