St. John's/Gtown game thread

This team barely has a 2nd scoring option. Sampson is the only one that can be counted on to score after Harrison. I think Sampson will have his inconsistencies in conference play. We do not have a third scoring option to speak of. None!

I would just use 10-11 players, and just press the dickens outta teams. Turn the game into a helter-skelter show.

Unfortunately this type of game kills program in 2013. Lots of reverberations from this type of game.

Wonder if lavin will stick it out here, maybe too steep of a hill to climb.

Tough to sell the turnaround after a day a like today, but its one game. A terrible game, but just one game.

On the upside, I don't see anything that makes me think we're going to lose Harrison, Sampson or anyone else to the NBA next season. We'll be a little older and smarter. We'll have Gift or another big man. Might have to evaluate if the staff needs another teacher/strategist.

Don't like what I see today, but should get better.

I've just returned home from my son's basketball game. I checked the score on my way home. Laughable.

I'm the last one to throw negative haymakers, but this looks bad. I'm not even gonna bother watching the remainder of the game. I was told by one of our posters, via text, that we're blowing easy shots and missing FTs.

I'm starting to wonder whether this team was poorly constructed. We may have too many athletes versus actually having basketball players.

Quite frankly, G'town isn't even good. To put it bluntly.... They stink, but we seriously blows.

This G'Town team took Indiana to O/T.

Your point? I've seen G'town play several times this season, and that Indiana game was their shining moment. They've played some serious clunkers in the past month and a half. I mean some downright, ugly games.

Too much dribbling no movement no give and gos no back doors poor shooting no foul shooting no offensive plans no subs yes no defense etc

If Lavin is leaving us on his own he's going straight back to the analyst desk

That would surprise me. Coach seems like a competitor and I can't see him giving up that fast.

I hate to drift into coach-speak and excuses, but we are young. We have some talent. Plenty of work to do, but I wouldn't expect Lavin to walk away from what he's started here.

What makes you think that? He's getting plenty of playing time and lots of opportunity to show his skills. Transfer means sitting out a season which puts him at least two more years away from the NBA.

This team was picked dead last in pre-season, and that's when the voters thought Sanchez would be eligible.
This one is on the team, nor the coach.

I was present at the Marquette game you guys speak of when we scored 8 points in the first half.

This game is right on par with it if not worse.

I could've pointed to that Marquette game and easily said lack of talent and poor coaching.

Simply stated, I can't say lack of talent this time around.

Guys will come on in here and defend Lavin until their fingers hurt from typing.

But if this game didn't scream "poorly prepared" then what does?

Kids will miss shots all the time. But when they happen to be forced shots, hard to blame anyone especially when there was no adjustment for the type of defense you were playing against.

I'm quite sick of this. And I'm tired of the spin Lavin puts on everything.

We've lost with worse coaches and less talen but we at least had some sort of gameplan even if we didn't have the best players in the nation.

I'm tired. MSG deserves better. Our fans deserve better. Stop the damn excuses.

On the team, not the coach?

He recruited them. It's his job to put them in the best position to score and defend. If they can't shoot, run play sets where they can score easy buckets. He knew they weren't shooters when he recruited them. Ok, adjust to what you recruited.

I agree. I stay optimistic because we have talented and athletic players, but this coaching staff really has been bad. Don't they have a set offense to run against the zone? Lavin would be a good coach for the Lakers, because he seems to allow one on ones on every possesion and poor defense

I'm usually very optimistic, but the past month and a half has been hard to watch. This isn't even good basketball (IMO, it hasn't even been watchable of late), and losing only compounds it.

there's enough of a gap in this dismal performance to spread culpability pretty broadly.
It won't accomplish anything though.
Let's hope that the coach and his assistants can motivate, prepare and push these players to put a Division !, Big East product on the floor next game.
