St. John's Big 12 rumor/Pitino & Prime

This doesn’t make sense to me. The 4 schools they’re talking about don’t have football. It would just ruin the Big East too. Seems like there is going to be 2 or 3 conferences when this is all done.
The big East back when it had football and non-football schools worked to a degree, and gets access to NY. B12 may be desperate post departure of Texas and Oklahoma.

Fanta mentioned B12 rumors with uconn and nova quickly last night on the Field of 68.

Take UCONN leave Nova. Makes more sense. With SJU becoming a powerhouse the TV $$$ will be higher during the next negotiations. Also, Nova fans are less a-holish.
But that’s like saying Jeffrey Dahmer had a unique palette.

Ugh, during the best Tournament the realigned Big East has had (up until the Sweet 16). In that case we'd have to hope St. John's is included... I'd think MSG would prefer that B12 over the remaining BE teams, and further the BE would become the A10+ rather than a Power conference.

I still believe these rumors are being put out there by the Big 12 and the Big East schools aren't on board (yet). Expect Gonzaga to join shortly, though.

Bumping this as SI included St. John's in an article a couple weeks ago, and it appears Colorado (and others?) will be heading to the Big 12 tomorrow. I think it'd be pretty unlikely, and probably not a good idea for St. John's unless a few other Big East teams go with them. If the B12 wants their tournament at MSG then I think St. John's would be a must.

Plan A might be plundering two to four teams from the Pac-12. Plan B might be a Colorado-UConn power play—but if Colorado is a non-starter, that probably ends the scenario. Non-football aspirations could involve St. John’s, which has the big-dollar booster backing of Vitamin Water founder Mike Repole and just landed Rick Pitino as its coach. They could involve Gonzaga, the hoops power of the Pacific Northwest, which would get the Big 12 into all four time zones and at least partially fulfill pursuit of a coast-to-coast conference.

Here we go again with St. John's going to a power conference!
We are in one of the top 3 basketball leagues in the country.
Negotiate a better TV deal!
Why be a poor step child for the richer football schools??

Could be worse, we could be one of the other 9 Big East teams not mentioned at all by SI. The nightmare scenario would've been if this happened a year ago and perhaps Villanova and UConn were taken and St. John's left behind. St. John's may now be the biggest brand after UConn with Pitino, Repole and MSG.

Still don't think we should go if offered, especially not alone, but it's better to be wanted than be a program like Seton Hall. If the Big 12 offers significantly more TV revenue then St. John's may need to look into a basketball-only pod with Nova and Georgetown.

We are not going to the Big 12 ever.

You never know with conference realignment, but Sports Illustrated is a legit source and this was posted 2 weeks ago, so some interest is there on the Big 12's end. As I've stated months ago before the UConn interest was confirmed, I believe the Big 12's goal is to get MSG for the conference tournament. MSG would not be interested with just UConn and a bunch of middle America teams, but if they also took St. John's, Villanova, and a couple schools like Arizona and Gonzaga to give it national appeal it then MSG would probably prefer that over the current setup. They'd be able to expand the number of nights / sessions while still having several local teams to guarantee ticket sales.

All I'm saying is if UConn joins, I think it's pretty likely St. John's becomes a target and they may be pressured by MSG / money. Just this week a bunch of NIL funds met with the NCAA to discuss TV revenue potentially going towards NIL. It's going to become really difficult to turn down extra money.

We are not going to the Big 12 ever.
Kansas to the Big East?
Howard to the Ivy League?
Uconn to the PAC 12?
Georgetown to the ACC?

PLEASE! The realignments are all football driven because that's where the media $$$ reside.

Every major conference wants to see the Big East crushed — it’s the last major obstacle to complete domination of college basketball by the football schools.

It would be very shortsighted for any Big East team other than UConn to go to the Big12.

The only thing that makes sense is an ACC-Big East merger when the major football schools leave the ACC.

"There are additional expansion options beyond UConn, some of which don’t play football. The primary candidate outside the football realm is West Coast Conference basketball power Gonzaga, which would give the Big 12 a school in all four time zones and a coast-to-coast presence. St. John’s, in Yormark’s hometown of New York, also has been floated as a possibility. Yormark has been clear that basketball is key, adding that basketball is “a catalyst for a lot of things moving forward,” including “international expansion.” Teams that advance in the NCAA basketball tournament also earn more money for their conferences—each round means more cash in both the school’s and conference’s pockets. The Zags have made eight straight Sweet 16s and 24 straight NCAA tournament appearances."

It's been discussed before, but mostly stemming from an anonymous twitter account or speculative opinion articles. This is another Pat Forde article with sources explicitly naming St. John's. Very interesting.

International expansion?
Wait til Yormark finds out that the rest of the world doesn't know wtf a "student athlete" is.
