St. John's Big 12 rumor/Pitino & Prime

St. John’s will win the NCAA tournament before their name ever gets brought up for a Big 12 invite.

At the start of the next tv deal big 12 teams (the version with UT and OU but with BYU, houston UC, and BYU) will make $31m annually. St. John’s makes about $4.5m (although the money will increase upon a new deal coming up). No way adding St. John’s or Gtown or UConn or Gonzaga adds enough value to justify an invite. If they did they would have already been invited by now. Keep in mind the big 12 could have invited utah, asu, au, and Colorado when usc and UCLA announcer their departure. They deemed those schools not worth the money. 10, 100, 1000 games at MSG is not going to change anything.

Btw, UConn would jump at an invite to any power 5 conference. Big 12, ACC, and the Big 10 already told them to pound sand. So for better or worse (worse) we’re stuck with them.

One thing to consider is while football drives the boat some conferences might feel that more than 12 is tough to manage from that perspective. That could be a reason why a super conference might look at a gtown or nova instead of a Washington state or Arizona state.

I would think sju would be quite a ways down that list but hey, perhaps NYC still matters in that capacity.

First, we know for a fact that the Big 12 has eyed several basketball schools, one of them being Gonzaga, over the past few months. That's public knowledge. These moves tend to be announced during the off-season and one poster (from the Zags board) mentioned that this will be announced after the Final Four. I don't know if that poster is credible (he has at least been a member since 2007), but the timing makes logical sense.

So, why didn't it happen years ago? Yormark was hired as Big 12 commissioner in the summer, therefore Big 12 decisions prior to that are irrelevant. If the Big 12 wants to maintain their basketball power, then they could do that by matching/exceeding the number of teams that will soon be in the SEC and B1G (keeps public perception high when more teams are in March Madness). Further, playing their conference tournament at MSG and taking the most valuable basketball brands from the Big East / Gonzaga would not necessarily dilute their football (at least initially- long-term it could create another old Big East scenario... but we know these moves typically aren't planned for decades in the future).

Oh, and let's look some more into their new commissioner:

In 2005, then Nets owner Bruce Ratner hired Yormark to help transform the Nets into a world-class organization and a more popular, modern, and contemporary brand. Yormark helped manage the franchise's transition from New Jersey to Brooklyn, and led the marketing and operations functions of Barclays Center, which opened in 2012. He spent 14 years with the Nets organization as CEO of Brooklyn Sports Entertainment. He negotiated several marquee deals for the Barclays Center, including with the New York Islanders, UFC, NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament, ACC men's basketball tournament, and the Atlantic 10 men's basketball tournament. Under Yormark’s leadership, the Barclays Center placed annually in the top ten of all entertainment venues world-wide for ticket sales.[3]

Hmm a big basketball guy who negotiated Barclays Center deals with several conferences and even the NCAA Tournament. You honestly don't think there's a chance he'd try to do something similar with MSG?

Whether this rumor has any legs is absolutely debatable, but it shouldn't be totally dismissed when there are plenty of reasons to think there could be something there.

Fwiw, another person hearing UConn and "St. somebody from the East" talking with the Big 12 (at the 47:00 mark). Clearly talking about St. John's even though he's unfamiliar with the school.

and the host speculates that he means St Bonaventure. More proof that we have been nationally irrelevant for the past 20 years.

Yep, was thinking the same thing. A team with a losing record from the 1 bid A10 is still more relevant than St. John's, even though we beat that same UConn team he mentioned a few weeks ago. Playing in March really is everything for the average viewer, and the Bonnies have done that recently.

Not that I want to go to the big 12. Although mediocre, St Johns brings the NY media and MSG to the table.

This is a totally cannabis fueled thread. Have fun guys.

The Big EAST may be on his list, too.

Yormark spent more than a decade with the Brooklyn Nets, then with Roc Nation Sports. He’s lived in that part of the country. He knows the value of the Big EAST and he understands the value of basketball in the northeast. When the Big 12 ventured outside its footprint in October for a basketball media blitz for the first time under his watch, where did it go? New York City.

We are back at 4 basketball only schools that are in discussions with joining. 1 out west, 3 in the east.

Gonzaga, Villanova, UConn, and Seton Hall?

Seton Hall is no longer an option. Huskies have come back to the table. The third is a big market school with a great history that has underperformed in recent years.

Assuming any of this is true, then clearly he's referring to either St. John's or Georgetown. If anything happens we should find out within the next month.

If something as far fetched as this or any other required decision to be made involving the schools sport programs who would handle the negotiations for SJU? There is no one.
Jack Kaiser is gone unfortunately.
