St. John’s (2020-21)

Random thought - Sometimes little things spawn opportunity.

Julian is under recruited and opts for prep school to improve his game and attract more offers. SJU has a roster spot and Van suggests CMA take a look at him. Bingo!

Posh has started on every team he has played on since buddy ball. He gets injured in his third year of high school and gets less recruiting attention. Van sees he has recovered, gotten into great shape and engages CMA to put the press on him early,

Well arguably our two best players became available to a struggling, rebuilding program. Sometimes a little luck and right circumstances can turn things for the better. In these two instances the stars lined up, staff pounced & these pieces seem the building blocks we needed to truly compete.

If Champagnie is consistently close to what he was last night he becomes a game changer. Very confident approach and body language even after he missed his first couple of shots. The ball going in when open is one thing but he took the ball to the hole smoothly a couple of times and made a nice baseline jumper off the dribble. One game is one game, good or bad, but he certainly looked like a much improved player off a good freshman year.

Definitely a step quicker and apparently upped the ante on his conditioning in off season. Smooth, easy going but highly competitive and lets game come to him. With so many kids displaying “me first” attitudes, JC is a breath of fresh air.

This entire team is a breath of fresh air, especially after watching the kids under the last 2 coaches, many of whom had that "me first" mentality that you mention.

Champ's ability to shoot really well mid range will draw defenses closer to him and open up space down low for easy buckets. He really can seemingly shoot from anywhere. They gave him the space last night and he kept saying "Ok, I'll take that".

Agree Paultz, luck played a part. Also the staff not giving up om players. Posh got hurt and everyone forgot how dominant he was before the injury. Julian has exceeded all expectations. Van recruiting him and Coach Anderson coaching him may be the best thing that has happened to this young man. Last night's game against BC showed how good he can actually be.

When Julian graduated from Loughlin, he was not considered one of the better players in NYC. At this point, only his brother at Pitt,, Kofi at Illinois, and Bouknight at UCONN are playing as well.

Posh is the same, who from the class of '20 in NYC is playing at the level he is? I believe that this shows this staff's player evaluation and coaching is very good. This should definitely have an influence on NYC kids in the future,

Wonder how Kyle Jr is enjoying the product and style of play staff is developing and promoting. Seems a nice match for a Uber athlete and competitive player like him. :)

Somewhat random, but anyone else see a little of Zendon Hamilton’s game in Isaih Moore? I actually think that Moore appears to have more and a higher level of skills, as Zendon always had a hard time holding the ball and putting it in the basket. Still, as Zendon got a taste of NBA life (at least for a little bit), It’s not at all meant as a negative comparison. Maybe I’m just seeing a very long and lanky kid with a relatively strong motor — which, other than Tariq, we haven’t seen in a while.,

I do see some similarities, but I feel much more comfortable with Moore putting the ball on the floor, and with Moore taking a midrange jumper. Of course the game has changed a lot since Z played, when big men were almost always just low post players. Having said all that, if we get anywhere near the production out of Moore as we got out of Z, I'll be very very happy.

We are developing some nice depth. Going to be tough to defend us down the stretch, in crunch situations, Champ, Posh, Cole, Williams, etc. A lot of options to go to. Looking more promising each game.

Some resemblance, mostly physically so far; have to see a little more of his game. BTW, Moore has had a hard time holding onto the ball at times too.

People forget how good a plyer Zen was (tho he could not live up to the hype coming out of HS). He nearly averaged a double double over 4 years here.

Watching Champ made me think that we have not seen anyone as smooth in STJ red since the late Malik Sealy.

Zendon had a herky-jerky motion but he could finish around the basket or get fouled trying.
Still waiting to see if Moore can do that. I like him but it seems he has gotten stuffed a lot.

He needs to stop always going up immediately, and start utilizing pump and head fakes when bodies of similar stature are around him.

Earlington should coach him.

Agree...that and also switching hands if he can. At this level, you can't just go straight up with the ball immediately when it's telegraphed. If no one is around then fine, but he does get stuffed a lot and seems to lose ball easily. He has very nice touch though.

I would rather learn from a win than a loss and one of the things I learned watching the game last night is that we have to get some bigs to set some picks to get the ball in-bounds against pressure. Very happy with the scoring, which was a bit of a concern coming in, and how well we are turning teams over, and thrilled with the 3-0 start. This is and easy fix in 5 minutes of practice.
