St. John’s (2020-21)

The player described as "our best player by far"
Who is that?

Anderson has said that his teams play better second half of season. You could argue that is true for all teams but I think in this case it has to do with conditioning for one thing and the complicated nature of playing a lot of players instead of just a core of 5 or 6. Plus we are integrating a lot of new players and possibly the starting PG is a freshman. I think a lot of things would have to fall our way to have early success. Not impossible but it sounds like both Roberts and Cole may be a bit behind due to health issues.
It was quoted somewhere in these threads that JC is our best player by far in practices.

No question CMA is a very good coach, and something we aren't accustomed to at St. John's, even in the LC coaching days were teams that roared into the post season by getting better end to end. It's not unreasonable to expect based on what we saw last season that a CMA team will improve during the season. This year we won't have to luxury of a soft OOC 13 game schedule, so we may as well just enjoy the season with no expectations, and hope to be pleasantly surprised if they can put together a very solid year.

I think our team will be greater than the sum of it's parts, thanks to CMA and staff.

Seems like most are penciling us in with a win AT Texas Tech who have a lot of talent, a very good coach and are pre season nationally ranked. That seems pretty optimistic to me.
Would you please stop with the rational thinking, you're really reeking havoc with our delusional fan base.
Think it would also work if you spelled it wreaking.

Reeking havoc = emitting the stench of havoc

I remember how some on this board dismissed Earlington as not even being a Big East caliber player....no one knows the future...but I think this team is going to surprise us...great additions to team this year and a solid core coming back...and the best part is the league picking us 9th! SJU is a great school...has a great coach....great AD....great Alumni...and great Fans...Really think NY bball is going to be exciting this year! GO ST. JOHNS!

one thing that I believe plays in our favor and shouldn't be overlooked is our depth. With COVID likely to cause some players to miss games, it helps to have 10+ guys that can play and that should give us an edge on some nights when the opposing team may be missing one or more key players, all things being equal.

Based on last year, I completely agree. But we haven't even seen a number of the parts yet. And I don't care how good a kid is in high school, at a JC or in practice, we don't know what we got until we see the kids on the court. Excited about the season, but not the cock-eyed optimistic some(not you) on this board are. Incremental improvement and NIT bid and I'll consider the season a success. Anything more, and I'll consider it a roaring success.

Monte, what I want to see is if we can make home court truly our and make it a b* for these other teams when they come here.
Would like to see say 8-2 or atleast 7-3 at home, and close to 500 on the road, maybe 4-6.
That's 11-9 in the b.e. Go atleast 6-1 in the ooc part, that's 17-10. That i guess is nit bound.
If we play great at home and make it ours then why can't we win 2 and even losing Saturday night we'd probably make it to the ncaa tournament.

I'd say it's all up to how well we protect home court.

Not saying it's impossible just not likely. To pencil it in as a win is what I find unrealistic.
Let's be realistic. The player described as "our best player by far" is not considered by coaches to be one of the top ten players in the league pre-season. I'd love to be pleasantly surprised, but let's just be reasonable and say the most likely positive outcome of the OOC schedule would be 6-1. If we stumble and lose one of the other winnable games, 5-2 with a tough 20 game BE schedule won't leave much room for error in terms of the possibility of an NIT or NCAA post-season. For us this season, the OOC is critical to our chances for the postseason in that 5 games above .500 (6-1) would give us a fair chance to moderately improve (to 8-12 in conference from 5-13) and still finish above .500 overall. I like what CMA has achieved so far, so I will lean towards 6-1. 7-0 would be a great start, but at this point there are just a lot of question marks, even with a much deeper team.

Last season not counting the BET, 42% of our games were OOC. 11-2 OOC enabled us to finish above .500 at 16-15. This season, only 26% of our games are OOC. We will need to do very well OOC and much better in conference to have a similar record as last year. Won't be easy, but its doable.
I think if some players exceed their expectations then an NIT birth with a finish around 7th would be a good year. Anything above that would be great.

Furthermore hopefully the future core of this team Posh/Champagnie//Cole/Williams/Wsu stays together and they add in the incoming frosh and maybe another impact player or 2 for next year and you may have something. That is why I would like to see recruiting pick up a little for next year.

Home court advantage won’t be a factor this season with few or no fans in the stands. And that obviously goes for all BE teams.

I think there is quiet confidence about this group. Remember, they were not out of a lot of games last year. I like the conditions this year for a big run due to:

1) shortened offseason. This will play out in a dramatic way as most teams will take longer to get in shape. They won’t have the luxury of rotating 10-12 guys in there.

2) Our organized chaotic way of playing will show itself due to reason 1 above. We won’t see teams hit mid season form until mid-late conference. They won’t gel as quick, lending themselves to disorganization. That plays into our hands.

3) shortened season means our guys will stay fresher for longer. We’ll hopefully be hitting our stride bu mid conference, and the wear and tear will not be as heavy as a factor as usual.

I think it will be a big year!

Btw SJU was picked 9th last year. They finished 5-13 tied for 8th with Georgetown 1 game ahead of DePaul. Because Hoyas swept SJU for BE Tourney seeding purposes SJU was 9th.

I just hope this doesn't mean that they added 3 inches to everyone else's height too.

If you believe what Donny Marshall said about Champ during one of the broadcasts last year, then they def added a few inches to his height as well.

Yes. Gavalas' mom is highly educated, so I'll assume he won't pull the team GPA down. Plus his sister was a D-1 track athlete, so maybe he'll provide some garbage time speed if it's in the genes.

Assume closed scrimages that we've seen the last few years won't happen this year?
