Respectfully, I didn’t say that. I said that the posters (I agree there are only a few) who attack staff and players personally and Who attack posters likewise. I’ve said that coaches are fair play as it relates to performance. It’s wrong to personally attack staff and posters.

I think we agree Dink.

You can agree that the Mullin experiment is all but over barring a miracle run or massive coaching changes and also feel for his family if something's going on or whatever coach is going through hardships. Sadly I think some posters are going to accuse Mullin critics (based on basketball results) of wishing ill on his family or attacking him personally to push their agenda. It's like politics. Personal matters in one's life and results of being a coach are two separate things, let's not conflate the two. Like I said, I called for an NCAA berth at a minimum and hope that still happens, but our staff except Matt are clearly in over their heads. That's the opinion I'm entitled to supported by plenty of evidence. If we did not schedule "cupcake city" as Dick Vitale called it, we very likely would've won 15-17 games IMO and not even been in the conversation for NCAA's let's be real. Our super weak OOC schedule masked our issues for a while. Big East play exposed us. Matt is a good recruiter but he cannot overcome negative recruiting against us which is still too easy. He also needs way more help with another recruiter. I will root for this team to the end...let's also keep coaches and their families in our prayers.

Agree with all that. Unfortunately The same posters who are apt to personally attack the staff and players are also apt to personally attack other posters.
I beg to differ.

Regardless, no one with the exception of possibly a couple posters has actually personally attacked any coach or player. Critiquing the staff on the merits of their coaching isn't in any way a personal attack.

With that being said, the staff has a chance to get some fans back into their corner with some wins in tournament play (conference and NCAA's).
To be clear I will defend Dinkins personally on almost every level because I know and like him. He is a big fan, and a great Dad and great guy.

I dont agree with every assertion of his regarding the team but dont have. He largely stays in bounds and except for his italian temper doesnt get too angry in dialogue. :)

I think that barring the resignation of Mullin and his assistant coaches we can expect to see him for 2 more years. Hopefully, there will be a postseason reassessment by Cragg and company and a review of recruitment and strategic designs by the staff. Got to have a plan going forward and be held accountable.

Agree Knight.
Retaining CM but reassessing the Staff’s structure, capabilities, and recruiting strategies and implement needed changes would be appropriate and best position the program for sustained future success.

This collapse should seal Mullin’s fate. The guy has failed to deliver in every way imagineable and it’s time for a new direction with a young hard working coach who won’t stop till this program is on top!

What young coach and what guarantee that we're not a stepping stone for a better gig?

So lets say we don’t make NCAA tournament and Cragg and Mullin meet. Mullin is told he has to make changes to his staff by bringing in someone with experience. Mullin says no. Then what happens? He won’t be fired because he is owed $4 million. The opposite side is he says yes. Mullin could then bring on anyone he wants as he has full contill. Now we stuck for atleast one more year with him. He needs to go. Go ask Bob Hurley what should do. He knows NJ and NY.

I would think insubordination is grounds for dismissal.

Any young coach who is hungry for success and willing to work hard for it Rawdog! Any young coach who would make sure his players understood the fundamentals of the game and ran an actual offensive set from time to time. There’s a reason why an “NBA style offense” is reserved for pro teams. Before you jump to the NBA style let’s get a few guys who know how to throw a 2 handed chest pass or make some free throws consistently.

Could go on and on but this collapse has magnified all of the deficiencies brought about by Mullin not being up to the task.

We have to step back from the brink, put things into perspective, realize that unless Chris resigns he’s our coach for the next 2 years, and encourage Mike Cragg and Chris to figure out what we need to produce better and more consistent results.
IMO, Chris Mullin bleeds red and white and can, with the necessary changes implemented, be a highly successful coach at St. John’s.

Oats or Hurley are easy choices and no-brainers. Not sure if they'd come, just saying best candidates. And I'd think most of us realize we'd be a stepping stone for almost anyone. If we are a stepping stone it will likely mean we had real success before they move on. Every Big East job except Villanova and G'Town is a stepping stone job. Look what happened to Mack, Stevens, Holtmann, etc. We will almost always be a feeder for the football conferences since they can pay much more than we can unfortunately. I'm totally fine with an Oats or Hurley staying for 5-6 years getting us successful consistently and then moving on. Obviously I hope they'd stay for 30 years but that only happens with blue bloods usually.

IF (I said IF) SJ make the tournament after what seems like a century, how could CM be fired? Did we become UCLA all of a sudden?

The most important thing a coach needs to do is recruit. What makes you believe that after 4 years, a switch will be flipped and recruiting will become anything like a priority?

Would be a fantastic IF, but even if it happens have our standards fallen so much that 1 tourney appearance every 4 years is enough? I don’t think so

I agree. Hopefully, that will flow from changes in the Staff’s structure, I.e., a new recruiter and x/o coach, with Chris on board with and fully engaged in the new mission statement.

Wouldn't be fired ever maybe unless he refuses to make any changes to staff...only leaves if he resigns. You have to be nuanced...it's not just making the tourney (if we do)...this year the bubble is historically weak and our conference is relatively weak. It was a wide open conference this year with some new coaches and tons of new players. Mullin has never finished within 1 game of .500 in conference play and is 32 games below .500 in his time here. There has also been a complete lack of development if not regression. There's a reason it's so hard for Matt to recruit...every other team easily negatively recruits us and all they have to do is show the results. Our OOC schedule was cupcake city and it inflated our win total probably by 3-4 games I'd guess. In other words, without a weak OOC we likely aren't even in the conversation for NCAA's.

The big holes are the lack of depth and the complete absence of a real big man. That falls on coaching...if you can't go D1 then try JUCO...if you can't get JUCO bigs then try D2...but we settled for more transfers who had to sit. If Bowling Green can find serviceable bigs, so can we. I'm not comparing us to Duke...only similar programs or way worse. Other than the personnel holes, it's clear we don't have any discipline on offense or defense and the players look clueless half the time. We played many teams without real NCAA hopes and they played like their hair was on fire. I'd argue that falls on coaching too. Matt's the only one getting real results IMO.

Well it seems from the gang on line on the forum who are in the know something bigger than wins and losses is going on. I hope if it involves Chris, his family, the staff and team that all will be OK. That is what is important. I will be there Wednesday night hoping we win like I have in person for over 35 years! GO SJU!

Most everyone on this site is a die-hard Johnny fan who comes at things from their own perspective (glass half full or glass half empty, patient or impatient).
The number of posters who go out of bounds by personally insulting players or staff (as opposed to critiquing performance) is small.
Many (maybe most) on here took the view that this year was a make or break year. Some lambasted the staff for not bringing in Rice or another AC and for not bringing in the obviously needed grad transfer big, the last of which has certainly proven true.
Others took the view (and I was one) that Chris has the right to pick his team and live or die with the results as the buck always stops at the top. The bottom line is, and I agree with Mike Zaun here, criticism of performance/results as opposed to personal insults is totally legitimate and is part of what a fan forum exists for.
I hope we somehow manage to pull a deus ex machina out of this BE tourney, but no one should feel guilty about legitimate criticism of a sustained lack of results.

That’s a great point, almost everyone agreed this year was make or break. A lot is hanging in the balance but it’s not looking promising.
