Sonoma State

I know its just an exhibition....but is anyone else really not all that impressed so far? Our main half-court offense is one guy take a couple dribbles and then pulling up for a 15-18 footer.

Don't forget we are still missing Branch, Sanchez, Gift and Bourgault right now. I don't think anybody should be impressed with a first exhibition game, even if we were at full strength.

Sampson's range has really improved since I saw him last year.
For only 6-6, Jones will really get a lot of time inside this year.
He's got some Lamont Middleton in his game.

Not watching the game (twitching with ESPN3 withdrawals right now), but Jones only has one board. Obekpa has for in half the minutes. It's weird that such a strong kid has no record of rebounding at any level (six per game in high school, five per game at IMG and one board in 14 minutes tonight).

 Where is Felix?

He may not be playing because he could also be a redshirt candidate.

That would stun me.
This team is in desperate need of guards.

I just don't see a need to redshirt him. Let him play. I know the staff likely has a plan but not sure how redshirting Balsmou helps us. So he uses a year of eligibility actually helping the team.

I agree, but I bet that is the reason we've yet to see him tonight.

Keeping it close! Love it. Especially when our best player rolled his ankle yesterday and is out and our top three-point threat has been off.

Sounds like some of your guys aren't in there, either.

Hope we can finish strong and carry this on to the regular season!

THink they're shorting Obekpa two blocks - I have him with 9, not 7. Think it's the two little interior blocks in the first half.

Quick observations:

Obekpa is the real deal. I had him with 9 blocks (they only gave him 7)

Jakarr is the real deal. Better shooter than I expected, better handle as well.

Jones COULD be a star, but he WILL be a STUD. MUCH quicker than I expected given his bulk and build. Confident on his midrange. Even showed the ability to make decent entry pass (bit of a lost art).

If Sanchez REALLY is as good or better than the other 3 frontcourt newcomers, this is going to be a SPECIAL team by mid-season.

Also liked the improvement in Greene. Still love Amir's all around game. Sir Dom is a year older Sir Dom. A solid 4-year guy. D'lo still pressing, tho. Needs to let the game come to him - he's got plenty of help this year - no need to carry the weight of the world.

Still tough to judge the team - Gift, Sanchez, Marco, Felix and Branch not playing - no telling what this team is like at full strength later this season. I mean, those five could easily be a successful D-1 Starting Five....

SJU won by 15 or 17 points. Jones had a monster jam on an alley oop and almost had another monster jam on an attempted put back but got the rim. Obekpa was after everything that went up in his area. I agree, it seems he had 9 blocks. In one sequence he had 3 in a row on attempted putbacks. Garrett looked more confident and benefitted from playing the second half of last season. It seemed it took him a while to catch up last year after sitting out the first semester, but he was in sinc tonite. Sir Dom looked for his shot more tonite and they were very aggressive in the man to man defense. Sampson looked real good. Sampson, Jones, and Obekpa really played above the rim. They can leap.
Nice mid range jumper for Sampson. Greene looked good, confident and had good looks on his three's. D'Angelo didn't start and didn't score much and got into foul trouble and sat most of the second half. Gift and Hooper were in sweats and never got in the game. Anyone know why?

I came away very impressed with our individual talent. As for playing as a cohesive unit, we have a ways to go. MInd you, we were without 3 players tonight that I think will be very important to us.

Not sure what was up with D'Angelo. He didn't start, and seemed uninterested when he was out there. Low energy. Just chalk it up up to a bad day I guess.

Phil looked noticeably better. Confident with his jumper, and I loved the step back between the legs. He didn't have that last year. Also, Phil always plays hard, never have to worry about him going through the motions.

Amir and Dom both looked more comfortable. Dom's handle got better, and although he probably will never provide consistent offense, he does all the little things. He's a glue guy. Amir I think actually should look for his offense a little more. He's developing into a solid shooter.

Sampson shot without hesitation and looked good. If he continues to bury mid-range jumpers, defenders will press up on him and he needs to work on getting to the rim. He had a nice spin move in the 2nd half. It could be a go-to move. His game does resemble Mo in many ways. Love him pushing the ball.

Jones is a pleasant surprise. For us to get this kid so late in the game is amazing. He's not as raw as I thought. Nice jumper, and also made some nice passes. Overall has a solid feel for the game. Can't wait to see more as he improves.

Obekpa lived up to the billing. He has so much to learn but just love the hunger to block shots.

Overall, we played sloppy. Defense was poor at times. All things I expect improvement in. Also not sure what to make of the man to man. Didn't play any zone. Strange.

Agree on all points...not a game to make too many judgments...but I was impressed with many of the guys

Obekpa looked good with those nasty rejections. we'll see how he blocks against better competition. Greene's jumper looked cleaner. Harrison looks like he is doing too much causing his foul trouble.
