So after tonight should Lavin...

a few weeks ago i was fully in support of Lavin and I posted it here but after coming out in the Big East and crapping the bed and then playing how we did tonight, I now say we go to the NCAA's next year or we fire him. Getting good players is nice but you need to be able to coach them. Lavin is a very below average X's and O's coach as we have seen and he will need to show improvement in order to get my support. This isnt UCLA and he isnt gonna bring in McDonalds AA's to mask his deficiency which is very glaring at the worst moments...

Agree

My worry is that letting him go after next year would have an adverse effect on recruiting at a time when we will need to reload. That is why I think the decision is now.

I agree. It won't happen, but it should.
A different coach might be able to really get something out of this team next year.
Lavin will under achieve. Whether it's missing the tournament or losing in the first round, we are leaving money on the table by letting him coach this team of seniors and juniors next year.
And it gives the new guy plenty of time to pickup the recruitment of the 2015 kids. Remember, kids like Lavin, but they really like playing time. And well still have a lot of that to offer.

Team won first round NIT last year................. without Harrison. How are we getting better?

I had a severe change of heart after tonight's game. This tweet by this guy sums up what I'm thinking right now.

@MikeDudaNY: You won 3 more games in a much weaker conference. You were out coached and out hustled all season. Tired of the excuses #sjubb #FireLavin

1-year extension if I were in charge.

Let him know that performances like tonight are no longer tolerated, but don't completely handicap him WRT recruiting.

Not firing him, because I don't have a viable alternative in mind.

As a '85 grad and long time season ticket holder, I was a Lavin supporter through thick and thin. I went tonight and in a seat upgrade from Sec 3 because not many people were there, I sat behind our great radio team. The press row was very interesting to sit behind. Lots of eye rolls and snickers throughout.
The team mailed it in. They were sleepwalking. No effort, they did not care. Lavin looked lost again. They, coaches included, collectively rolled over. We had 1,000 people for a NIT game in a tourney where the road was paved to have us win it all. We would have played all home games throughout. Instead we bombed in game 1. If I am top recruit, what am I coming to? Why would I come?
Our team is collectively too erratic, too many ups and downs. No coaching leadership. Enough.
Its time to pull the plug on this.

You'd probably have to do what you stated you wouldn't do. I could be wrong, but I doubt he signs a 1-year extension.

Lavin is now officially damaged goods in the world of D1 coaching. If he isn't "willing" to sign a 1-year extension, then he can go back to TV.

That's what he'd probably do. 'Cause I don't see him penning a 1-year extension.

This is tricky. With critical 15 recruiting coming up, you need to think this through a bit. It's easy to say, one year or don't extend him, but what are consequences? This coming from someone who is not a fan of Steve. Lol Btw, will SJU name a new President in my lifetime?

Did you see they recently stated that they had over a 100 candidates under consideration...wow...what focus

It's very, tricky. That is why I stated it'll have to be more than one year. It'll probably have to be, at least, three years for him to sign it. I could be wrong, but just stating what I believe.

I believe the new prez will be named in the spring.

This is honestly ridiculous. Tonight's game was Lavin's fault!? Should he be fired because of how the season ended? The thought of Lavin being fired in itself is a joke. There are legitimate expectations for St. John's, something we haven't had in over a decade. He has been here for 4 years (1 of which he had cancer) and you guys expect us to be competing for national championships. This guy has us landing recruits we could only dream about just a few years ago, the team's win total has increased every year. Sometimes you have to look at the players and realize they just aren't as good as we thought they would be. period. We have a very bright future, if we are in this position next year I can see calling for Lavs head but this isn't the year to do it IMO.

I never said fired, I said do not extend him this off season and see what he does next season, I doubt we buy him out of two seasons anyway.
If no NCAA tourny next year, then yeah fire him. I don`t care about their record, just get us into the ncaa, that`s why he is here right?
To get us into the damn NCAA, it will be his 4th year with his recruits.
So taking over a mess that Norm left will be no excuse, and cancer that he had a few years ago will be no excuse.

No excuses Lavin, do the freaking job you were brought here to do and deliver us an NCAA or you should go byebye after next year.

If the Lavin defenders get upset by that, then to damn bad. Next year will be his 5th year, GET IT DONE OR GO BYEBYE.

To leave Lavin hanging going into next season would be problematic
The 2015 recruiting class will set the tone for the following 3-4 years
I would think that prospects would be turned off to St John's not knowing whether or not the coach recruiting them will be here for the long haul
I am as disappointed as everyone else about tonight's debacle
The team just didn't show up to play
And, while it's no excuse, I have seen this many times before in the NIT
Kids (and yes, they are still kids) who think they should have been in the NCAA's mail it in playing in the NIT

Yeah Mark, well what about the Providence game (the most important game of the season.), WTF happened there Mark? Guess they just didn`t show up last Thursday huh?
Guess we just didn`t show up against Xavier too huh?

JUST STOPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPPP.

if you are going to extend him you have to do it for more than a year. 4 years with 2 years guaranteed or something on top of his 2 years remaining

1 year extension is a waste of time and if he had a great year next year but didn't recruit for 2015 it would be easy for him to walk and take a job opening. You need to lock it in right both ways if you are going to do it right

Yep, the guarantee period is the key element.

Btw, im reading things in the media about Crean at Indiana. Anyone here have insight about that situation.
If they let him go then St. Johns has got to do and spend whatever it takes to get the guy. He would recruit well from day one and would hve these guys in the elite-8 next year

Then, have them in the CBI (or, sitting on the couch) the following year. :ngrin:

That would be a dream at this point. We have a figurehead/spokesperson/recruiter in Lavin, we do not have a head basketball coach. We have assistants who clearly don't speak their mind, or were overrated coming in, and a legend in coaching who writes pages of notes that are either irrelevant, misunderstood, or just swept under the rug. We have one actual star player in the making (Jordan) and a cast of athletes that would probably gel better as a volleyball team. I think Harrison would excel in a real offense game plan where his role is defined. The rest of the team has various skills but needed a real basketball coach to make progress. NCAA's in 2015 seems unrealistic at this point unless there is a major change.
