Slow down...Breathe; Its Only January

Everyone is throwing numbers out there. "If we beat so and so on the road and sweep everyone but Nova at home, then we will have x amount of wins in the conference." I know we are better than we looked at Gtown and Xavier, but until I see a W in the conference, I am not counting on anything. The team had a win in the NIT last year, adds a highly coveted HS recruit, a grown man among boys with alleged NBA talent, gets back their best offense player, and shows no improvement so far. Go figure. I can't make any sense out of this.

New head strategist. New defensive scheme. New point guard. New center. Way more players making it hard to develop chemistry and define roles for guys that were used to playing 30+ mpg and having to score and play outside of their strengths. We've lost two tough road games to Xavier and Georgetown. The panic on this site is amusing to me. It reminds of all the Lavin recruiting bashers right before Jordan signed.

You are right. Where is my head at. The team is trying to work in a new point guard and although older and experienced, another first year Division One player via junior college. They also rely on a sophomore still getting used to the college game. There is no way people should expect a big year out of this team. Let's be reasonable. This mix can't work. Except imagine if I wrote this in 1999. The freshman point guard is Erick Barkley. The JC transfer is Bootsy Thornton. The soph is Ron Artest. One senior, Ty Grant, got a lot of minutes. As did soph Reggie Jessie and junior Lavor Postell. And they had a new head coach. That team went 28 and 9 and was a bucket short of the final four. The difference is that the 1998-99 team had guys who knew how to play the game. This team has guys still struggling with fundamentals.

Great reply, I am amused by the posters on here who keep predicting great wins and miraculous turnarounds and then when they don't happen post about people's irrational expectations. We should be a better team then we are now, no debate.

I agree with you Logen however using the Barkley crew is not a great example to contrast chemistry, since those guys had played together for years in HS/AAU and had great chemistry and thrived with very little coaching. According to the players at the time, they didn't even practice offense. Jarvis basically just sent them out there and they did what they'd been doing together for years. For all his flaws, Jarvis was not guilty of over-coaching.

Good point on the Barkley team, agree they had a foundation this group didn't.

I don't remember Jarvis just letting them play. Did you forget the chubby Jarvis Junior holding up the cards indicating the set plays on offense. I will give you that the team was balanced with a lot of unselfish passers who played with their heads up and cut and moved the ball - just about the only guy who loved to score more than pass was Bootsy, and he was the perfect garbage man to hang around the hoop, keep moving, and often found the ball in his hands for an easy hoop. But the team didn't freelance. And as much as the name Jarvis sickens people, the man could coach Xs and Os.

Like most things, I am lost right now.

Don't know if this has been posted, . Kenpom Has an article (kenpom.com) about our talent. He says we are not that talented and we are missing the most important talent being able to make shots.

Oh, so all we need are two 1st round and one second round ACTUAL NBA draft picks as well as a pair of the most skilled and gutsiest Redmen of all-time? That seems like a fair comparison...I mean, most of those guys only started playing together in nursery school. Nobody on this roster is Ron Artest. Nobody on this roster is Erick Barkley. Nobody may even be Lavor Postell. How nasty would this team be if you just subbed out Jordan/Sanchez for Barkley and Grant.

The point is simple. The reason this team has no signature wins and struggles against mid majors has nothing to do with fitting in new players and dealing with one new assistant. I t has to do with their deficiencies on the court. Shooting, rebounding, recognizing and guarding the dangerous 3 ball shooters on the other team. They play together 10 more years, and they will still have shooting and rebounding deficiencies. Plus, did Bootsy play AAU ball with Barkley? Not that I recall. They meshed on day one. Sometimes, every player on this team looks like they are in their own little world. Lack of teamwork is troubling. Year 3 for Harrison Greene, and Dom. 1.5 years playing with Sampson and Obekpa. Didn't Sanchez practice with this team last year?

I agree with most of what you said, but this statement is not true. Regardless though, there is a big difference between adding a guy to a core group that have been playing together forever, and the situation with this year's team.

You'll be fine by February, so says Lavin wood. If not, there is always pitchers and catchers to look forward to. :cheer:

Not if you're a Mets fan. It's just a warning of the beatings that are coming soon..

I believe that Barkley, Artest, Jessie, Gray, Glover and Grant all played on the same AAU team. I believe Elton Brand was on that AAU team also and he is the only one who didn't come to St. Johns.

That's correct. According to their staff and late czar, the best team Riverside ever had. I saw a ton of their games and agree.

WOW imagine if Brand had picked us instead of duke!! I still think about how things would be if Darius Miles had come to play here with Omar Cook.

Didnt they win 90 games in a row, or something like that ?
