Slow down...Breathe; Its Only January

StJohn's will finish this season with a record approximating 17wins -14 losses overall and 7wins and 11losses in the Big East.

Yes indeed, with the athletes which posters posted about on this site I believe that StJohn's will be poised this March to make a run at the final four of the NIT.

What if what alot of posters said on here is the truth, and Lavin lost the locker roon (I never said it, but other did.)

What if SJU goes 6-12 in the B.E. do we accept that too?

I`m anxious to see the replies, I wouldn`t be surprised if everyone said that they`d accept it

My gut tells me SJU will lose only two more games all season and finish first in the Big East. Unfortunately, that means only 2 teams from the Big East will get NCAA bids.

I don't think we *have* to win against Villanova. But we *must* keep it very close, a la the Syracuse game. And there will be almost no margin of error after that for the rest of the season.
Will be interesting to see Nova vs Seton Hall tonite.

We are in theory 2 games behind where we should be. Figure PSU and 1 of the BE road games. That turns into a MUST win game on Saturday. Figure you get 7 or 8 wins at home in BE play then you need 4 on the road.

I'm not big on must-wins, but this is pretty close. We have no marquee wins to date, and Nova at home is our best chance the rest of the season. I think we are only one game back of where we should be (Penn State) for gaining a berth in the tournament. I don't think starting 0-3 or falling to 9-6 makes this game a must-win...just the marquee matchup.

I think your gut is better than Otis' gut.

God bless your optimism Marillac! Villanova is playing the best ball of any Big East team and is better than the Hoyas so a win would be a big upset for us. If we win the team can turn the corner. If we get spanked like we did against the Hoyas I think the fan base becomes more apathetic than they were and people start asking why a team without injuries needed to activate a red shirt, why are walk ons starting, why are we never ready for an opponent, and why all the negative outlook for his team by Lavin, the great recruiter, who had so little confidence in his top 100 recruits that he would diminish their abilities as a team to say they may not gel until February? It is bad enough when we, the fans, go negative with the ability of the team but when our coach confirms it for us with his sound bites, then we all assume loser mentalities from coaches to players to fans.

Um have you read the board since Saturday. I think I can count on one hand how many posters would 'accept' a 6-12 Big East season.

You always post about athletes and talent. Do you really think there is anyone on this board that thinks we have a skilled team? Rankings are projections and half the kids in the top 100 are there because of potential--in other words, athleticism. You take a kid like Dom Pointer because if he ever develops a decent amount of skill, he becomes unstoppable.

You guys are unreasonable. Take a terrific athlete that is lacking in skill, switch the coach responsible for x's and o's three straight years, change the roster around completely, change the system three years in a row, and then complain that the kid doesn't play with the skill and IQ of Kellen Dunham and that the team in doomed in the first week of January. Maybe we are, but we haven't even played a single freaking conference home game yet. Whitesell was hired 5-6 months ago. The kids probably have 3-4 weeks before everything clicks and they can put together 40 solid minutes. They just have to hang tough and ride out the periods of good ball to pickup some wins until that point.

74-71 St. John's.

A win vs. Villanova could set off a run of wins. Next are: @ DePaul, Vs Providence, Vs. Dartmouth, Vs. Seton Hall which are all winnable.
After the SHU we could be 14-5, 4-2 That`s pretty decent.
A loss vs. Villanova in a hard fought battle the same as the Syracuse game will show me that they still are trying for Lavin and themselves and very well couldwin those 4 next games.
A Spanking at the hands of Villanova and I won`t be asking any questions because I won`t give a damn and I`ll say byebye atleast until Lavin is gone and we bring in the right coach.

A blowout in back-to-back games??? Hey whoever stays on board after that is better then me, but we did that with Jarvis and Norm but nah I`m not dealing with that with Lavin here, just can`t.
So to me this is the biggest game of the year for two reason. It will tell me where the kids heads is at, and will Lavin still be toying with the lineups.
Another thing, if Villanova spanks SJU then then no one should complain when attendance is down at MSG.

I`m sure most are sick by now of my negative crap on here, so I won`t post again until after the game, can`t wait to see that starting lineup.

Everyone is throwing numbers out there. "If we beat so and so on the road and sweep everyone but Nova at home, then we will have x amount of wins in the conference." I know we are better than we looked at Gtown and Xavier, but until I see a W in the conference, I am not counting on anything. The team had a win in the NIT last year, adds a highly coveted HS recruit, a grown man among boys with alleged NBA talent, gets back their best offense player, and shows no improvement so far. Go figure. I can't make any sense out of this.

New head strategist. New defensive scheme. New point guard. New center. Way more players making it hard to develop chemistry and define roles for guys that were used to playing 30+ mpg and having to score and play outside of their strengths. We've lost two tough road games to Xavier and Georgetown. The panic on this site is amusing to me. It reminds of all the Lavin recruiting bashers right before Jordan signed.

So, if you "don't accept" it, what do you do when it happens?

My recommendation would be to write to Father Joseph L. Levesque, C.M.
It will help if you tell him Class of 72's cousin had him for Religion at St. John's Prep in 1968.
He will remember him if you tell him he was the only student he failed that year because he questioned virgin birth myths.
That may get his attention but when I complained to him this week about Lavin he responded by asking "Is he not the Coach at UCLA? He coaches here now?
I responded by saying, NO he does not coach here, he just recruits here and leaves the coaching to Rico Hines, former advisor to Nobody in particular.

This is hilarious I can't stop laughing

You are right. Where is my head at. The team is trying to work in a new point guard and although older and experienced, another first year Division One player via junior college. They also rely on a sophomore still getting used to the college game. There is no way people should expect a big year out of this team. Let's be reasonable. This mix can't work. Except imagine if I wrote this in 1999. The freshman point guard is Erick Barkley. The JC transfer is Bootsy Thornton. The soph is Ron Artest. One senior, Ty Grant, got a lot of minutes. As did soph Reggie Jessie and junior Lavor Postell. And they had a new head coach. That team went 28 and 9 and was a bucket short of the final four. The difference is that the 1998-99 team had guys who knew how to play the game. This team has guys still struggling with fundamentals.

There is some modest progress. With our 15th win this year we will have surpassed Coach Robert's last 3 year record in our own last three years; and, we need only 4 wins in the conference to outpace our three year conference win record '07 to '09. I think the talent in this group indicates an ability to be producing a better result but it's seemingly getting tougher for anyone to win games in a major conference like ours. A full 40 minutes of playing hot will get us on track.
Let's hope we get an upswing. A win this week would reduce a lot of anxiety.

Great reply, I am amused by the posters on here who keep predicting great wins and miraculous turnarounds and then when they don't happen post about people's irrational expectations. We should be a better team then we are now, no debate.

Did you enjoy the Gtown game like you enjoyed the Xavier game?

My concern is not the record to date, but poor play thus far for the most part. Saturday's game just threw me for a loop, regarding the bizarre nature of staff's approach. I just think we have not been a model of consistency and stability. Hopefully the tinkering with lineup nonsense is over and we put the lineup & rotation to work that maximizes our chances to win. Even if this group of kids can't shoot very well, don't play real smart and rely too much on the "athleticism" factor, it is what it is. I expect staff to recognize their strengths and deficiencies and put a game plan together to maximize chances of success. No one can say the Georgetown debacle was representative of that. Let's get it together Saturday & at least compete. If we get drubbed, I would expect the players will begin to lose their confidence and faith in their coaches.
