Although my fingers have been hovering over the panic button since G'Town's first half, Lets see how the redmen respond on saturday. I'm not into this whole "wait till Februrary" Mantra, But I will say thats just about the only thing Lavin has been consistent on all year. They bring up some good points in the article below.

Slow down. Despite St. John's 0-2 Big East start, breathe; it's only January
By Norman aka Pico

On the heels of the drubbing at Georgetown, the Red Storm are 0-2 with a contest against the imposing Villanova this Saturday at Madison Square Garden, the first home game of the Big East schedule.

There's still time to turn the season around, and these losses may be the low points before the Johnnies start clicking. Or there may be more.

Steve Lavin, after the game on Saturday, said (via ESPN), "I’ve also coached long enough and had teams that oftentimes it was the school of hard knocks - it was sometimes getting worse before it gets better, but eventually it’ll get better. That’s what we’re after."

Reader Andrew pointed out via email that the 2011, senior-laden Johnnies with Norm Roberts' recruits were a clunky 11-8 and losers of five of six after a 25-point demolishing in the Verizon Center to the Hoyas.

Naturally, they housed Duke (4 in Pomeroy's rankings at the time, 3rd in the AP ranking) and went on the reach the NCAA Tournament.

But the growing pains are hard. From after that game, discussing a players-only meeting mentioned by Dwight Hardy, D.J. Kennedy had this to say, via the NY Daily News:

"We can't panic. Everybody's got to keep their heads up. Every time we go on a little losing streak, everybody looks for the panic button. Stay together, learn from this. If we win the next three, it will be a whole different story....It's the Big East....We just happened to get the rough end of the schedule."

From Saturday, courtesy of ESPN again, Steve Lavin talks about that 2011 squad:

"That [Dwight] Hardy group, it was probably early February they really started turning the corner in understanding [sustaining concentration, sustaining the level of execution, sustaining your defensive coverages], it took us a while."

Keep that in mind.

Yes, we can have a conversation about why it's taken so long to create a cohesive brand of basketball, and whether it's a good thing that the team has to land in this kind of doldrum and have to fight its way back into NCAA consideration.

Yes, there is a lot of work to be done.

Yes, this team will carry flaws into any postseason tournament it makes.

But the stark reality is that there is a lot of hoops time left, isn't there?

Yes there is time left even if we lose on Saturday, but there is perception and then there is reality. No one wants to see if the team will recover from starting 0-3 in conference play. Of course if we lose to Villanova, then we will have no other choice.

With the Hardy team it was understandable that it took some time, it was a completely different coaching staff. The core of this team has been together a couple of years, I find it hard to swallow this rationale when they ALL individually and collectively as a team are playing the same way they did as freshmen. I hope with all my irrational rooting heart we see a monumental turn-around as I will be a Johnnies fan forever, but I see no reason to think that turn-around is on the horizon. Like Yogi said, "it is getting late early."

Teams had more practice time this season compared to 2011, we had a trip to europe this season, so this team has had a much greater chance to gel. This is not the 2011 team, and that team had so much more heart.I dont remember there being so much talk about NBA lottery picks with that team. I remember a bunch of diving for the loose ball, making all the tough plays..I see more overall talent on this team for sure, but that team in 2011 played like a team, everyone knew their roles on the team.the go to guys were brownlee and hardy...who are our go to guys??? Harrison and who else? Jakarr fades at times, and isnt consistant..Sanchez I have yet to figure out his game, sometimes he thinks he is a 3 point shooter, sometimes he is at the elbow, sometimes he is on the baseline..I get scared to death when Greene, Dom, Sanchez shoots a 3 ball..

but think about it. The dilemma was similar. Jordan has not firmly established himself as the answer at point, although many of us would debate that - plus there's the lingering question of whether or not he is/was thinking of leaving. It wasn't until Hardy took over the point (with very questionable point guard skills) that the team took off on a run, and even then we ran out of steam, partially due to Brownlee's injury. If this team funds its stride and sets a rotation, we all believe it COULD take off.

Actually, I believe we can win the next three games after Villanova. If we win, we could be 4-2 after 6 games, but 3-3 wouldn't exactly be the end of the season.

I think the 2 are connected. Once we set a rotation, we will hit our stride. 4-2 after 6 games with 3 away games would be a great start. Alot of people would jump off of the "Fire Lavin Bandwagon" lol

If they lose to Nova AND DePaul there will be plenty of guys to come over to your side of the fence. All would agree that a win vs. Nova is a great time to reverse recent fortunes.

Again, I hope I get 643 posts telling me how wrong I was; I'll undoubtedly argue not but at least it will mean we are playing good ball.

I agree with the Subject tag and hope the premise of the article is correct.

I have watched enough of St. John's over the years to know that despite how bad they might look one night, they can always reverse things and go on a run. They've done it before, many times. Unfortunately, they've also done it the other way, where they look like world-beaters one night and then go lose 6 in a row.

Blowout losses suck no doubt. Let's hope this team dives for loose balls, takes charges, plays some D, like the Hardy/Kennedy group. Boy they were fun to root for.

A lot of the season remains.

Lavin's gotta stop with the "bring up Dwight Hardy's name when I've run out of excuses" nonsense he always tries.

On the other hand, if they beat Villanova it will be probably be because the coach played
a legitimate starting five and didn't play tag team substitution patterns. If the players were just playing
poorly I don't think the draconian posts would be so prevalent. When the coach is floundering, that's more serious.
Like any leader in business or the military, when the person at the top begins to act with seeming desperation,
when he appears to have lost control over his subordinates and/or himself, hope and trust yield quickly to
alarm and chaos.
If SJU beats Villanova it will likely mean the coach, perhaps with help from one the assistants, got control of both the players and his own recently self-destructive instincts and "message sending" gambles..

I don't think we *have* to win against Villanova. But we *must* keep it very close, a la the Syracuse game. And there will be almost no margin of error after that for the rest of the season.
Will be interesting to see Nova vs Seton Hall tonite.

We are in theory 2 games behind where we should be. Figure PSU and 1 of the BE road games. That turns into a MUST win game on Saturday. Figure you get 7 or 8 wins at home in BE play then you need 4 on the road.

Although I have high regards for your person and opinions, I disagree. As stated previously, I believe they can afford to get swept by one team, if they sweep 3 teams, and go 11-7 (bubble). I think splitting with Xavier and Georgetown is completely within that scenario. Had they lost to either or both at home, then I'd be alarmed. The only acceptable team to get swept by is Villanova at this point, and even in the above scenario 4 sweeps by us is not out of the question. Xavier and GTown held serve - now when we play them, we have to do the same.

Again its fluid. Based on the way we have played thru 2 BE games you can say we would be among the bottom 3 teams in the conference. Your right we very well might win their home fixtures against those two. But for a team with no signature OOC wins a road win there in just 1 of those games would have been beyond HUGE. I don't think anyway around the fact that we are 2 losses behind where we should be. Assign the losses however you choose.

We can't have our road wins be Hall, DePaul, Providence and one other. Need more.

My thinking is that 12-6 in the Big east is a no brainer bid, and 11-7 puts them on the bubble. I thought 12-6 would be a the high end of expectations for this group before we started the Big East season so I am still not ready to cash my chips on the season and wouldn't unless we lose on the road to DePaul, regardless of how we do vs. Villanova. Come to the Nova game, my positive karma will have an effect on you and the team.

I agree with that last statement- hence no real margin for error if we lose Sat.

That`s where I differ from you Beast. I`m not gonna argue with you, it`s your opinion.
But I could never accept being swept by anyone.

Wheather it`s Duke, Arizona, or any top team.
Yeah it would be more then likely but it doesn`t mean that I have to accept it.

I don't think we as fans accept losing from our team (hell fans on here complain when we WIN).. It's more about 'acceptable' to NCAA committee.
