and Wood

Didn't sign.

Where does the third opening come from?

Just wondering.

I dont think their is a third opening. 2 scholarships left for either Wood, Obekpa, Chandler or perhaps someone we dont know about if Lavin choses to use them

If we can get Obekpa and Chandler, we will take them. We have the ships right now. Wood is verballed and still trying to get the grade. I think it all depends on how it shakes out. To be truthful, all I really want is 1 of the 2 big guys. If we can land both, we'll be a big time team next year. We land one of them, I still think we are a top 6 Big East team this season.

Agreed, I have high expectations for this team even with my mindset being that our class was finished. Adding another big would be the icing on the cake

If as you say with one big we would be top 6 BE but if we land both bigs we will be a big time team WHY PRAY TELL would you state all you really want is one. Are you afraid of too much success?

Absolutely. I'd rather have the two bigs than another wing as well. It's really the only place we don't have a top level starter nor 2nd stringer and are filling in with guys who have some but not all the qualities you'd want.

Don't get me wrong, we need to add a big. And adding two certainly wouldn't be a bad thing.

But don't sleep on Wood. We do have a lot of wings, but not too many who are natural scorers outside of Harrison. Wood is thin, and has his deficiencies, but the guy can put the ball in the net; in transition, from the outside, and in the midrange. And he's athletic as hell.

We saw last year, this team can run with anyone, and with more depth our defense will be more aggressive and improved. But there were nights we simply got shot out of the gym (think the Hall, that second Cincinnati game, and the 'Cuse game). And losing Moe obviously doesn't help. Maro, Felix, and Jamal will all help - but from what I've seen none of them are the complete scorerers that Wood could be.
So while big men are a need, I won't be complaining if Wood is eligible and in a Red Storm uni in the fall. We'll need him. Just my opinion anyway.

On those nights when a designated shooter is needed I thought that's why Bourgault and Hooper (in 13/14) were coming in? I think Phil will also show better shooting ability as he continues to mature and isn't forced to play out of position at PG as much as he was in 11/12. I like Wood's potential from what I've read as well but the roster's almost full and there's not prototypical bigs. I don't consider that a nice to have a couple, more a need to have it you want to reach big time heights.

Austour is right. Two bigs would be fantastic. There is no logjam because we lose God's Gift after this season and Sanchez will be a senior PF. If there's any way we could land both Obekpa and Chandler, we most certainly should. Both different players and excellent in their own right. Have them split the game in the post.

Still the hunt for some outstanding 2012 prospects. This Johnnies class addresses needs of size, shooting, point guard play and team depth!

Great how Lavin keeps SJU fan base going. Even ambiguous tweets let us know we're still rolling. Now let's land Obekpa!

Lavin also tweeted:

Moe Harkless continuing to impress in Chicago Pre Draft Camp! No surprise that Mr Harkless is climbing the Draft Board daily. STJ Lotto Pick

Maybe he knows something about Moe being a lotto pick

With our limited number of schollies and going forward to next year for Lavs to be willing to give out one or two more this year you know they have to be pretty good players and important pieces. Great news.

Per Zags.... "Cancer Recovery Enabled Lavin to Pull Off Recruiting Coup"

I, figured I would place the piece here since it's on Coach Lavin.

http://www.zagsblog.com/2012/06/14/cancer-recovery-enabled-lavin-to-pull-off-recruiting-coup/

Lavin is a recruiter and knows that talent wins ballgames. I think it was a great move by him. Well calculated and allowed him to get this team rebuilt. Now we are rebuilt and can just reload with stud talent as we move forward, whether kids graduated, transfer or leave for the NBA. Very enviable position for Lavin to have now with a full roster, and only a scholarship or two to give out next year to cherry pick.

Lavin is the man....So glad he is here and sees the tremendous potential of the program and all that it can offer...I loved this quote:

“My competitive nature had me itching to coach in games but that had to take a back seat in order to better prioritize the objectives that would move our program froward,” Lavin said. “A full recovery on the health front became the No. 1 priority and then a close second was hauling in a class of seven or eight top prospects.

This great recruiting class was a 'close second' to a full recovery from cancer! God bless this man!

He could just be visiting his parents or something since it not a live period. And he will be back for the Draft tomorrow and Moe. Like Fordham pointed out probably just some visitors this weekend on campus which IS allowed.

Regardless Moose, Lavin dropping a line that this is a big recruiting weekend has to mean something.
