This came out of no where. Offensive numbers seem pretty bad but was a high level defender and a 4 star out of HS. Do we actually have a shot here?
6-foot-4, 210 pound guard. Wow. Maybe Paultzman and Fordham are onto to something with Alvarez, because what a sick line up we would have. Who the hell would want to face our defense?

Anybody got a scouting report on Mathis,  I only watched Rutgers in the tournament this year, really didn't notice him much.  His shooting numbers aren't that great, but I know that doesn't always tell the whole story.  Is he a defensive specialist?  He was a top 150 4-star out of high school.

I watched almost every Rutgers game this year. Montez started the season well but his play fell off during the season and, as a result,  he was getting less and less playing time. He is very athletic, plays good defense and rebounds well for a guard. His shooting is suspect. He is a streak shooter. When he's going well, he can (and has) fill it up but, when he's off, he's better off on the bench.

If it came down to a choice between the two, I'd rather have Greg than Montez

He dropped 25 pts vs Purdue this year and double digits vs Maryland and Illinois this year.  Not sure why the sporadic scoring. It seems capable. Big guard and. Very good defender.  Would be a very good pickup.

If the staff’s expressed need is a shooter, I would take Greg back over gritty defender, but not great outside marksman in Mathis Now get your ass off the fence Greg. :)

Not only can he defend but he can really get to hoop offensively. Outside shooting a little Suspect from what I’ve seen but again, can really defend and drive to hoop offensively

See my post above. I have watched almost every game that Montez has played. I couldn't agree with you more, Paultz. At times, Montez can be explosive but Greg is an overall better player IMO

I want the kid that wants to be here. Greg needs to make a decision.  In addition we need to land somebody to compete with Greg because as of now his head and his heart don’t want to be here and he’s got chronic injury issues. I don’t want to be caught unprepared ala Figueroa so if this kid wants to come, we can take him and still land another shooter/guard type and we have Stef Smith on board already as well as Wusu and Pinzon some very talented young players.

Agreed Mark, but Mathis has had some big games in very good league. He was a 4 star recruit and we all know that developing players is a strength of this staff. If Greg is not coming back replacing him with Mathis would be no drop off defensively and hope staff can develop his offensive game. I would take him in a heartbeat. He’d be a quality replacement and his defensive game, the way he gets up and down the floor and his athleticism really fit our system .

Check his stats. As I mentioned, he got off to a very good start. He had 10 or more points in 5 of his first 6 games, including the 25 against Purdue. He only had one more game with 10 or more points the rest of the regular season (next 15 games). In his last 11 games, he scored 0, 8, 6, 6, 4, 0, 1, 9, 5, 4 and 12 points.

He has good size for a guard, is athletic and can defend. He can be explosive but is not a dependable scorer.  I hope Greg returns if Montez is the alternative.

Cool, thanks for the info.  Sounds like the better option would be Greg.  Although, I've seen other people on twitter say as you have he's a really good defender and would be an upgrade defensively.  Looks like CMA is really prioritizing defensive minded players.  If Greg is out, I wouldn't be upset if this was the replacement, him and Wusu would be a nice rotation at that 3rd guard spot.

Gene, I'm not knocking Montez and don't disagree that Montez has skills and would fit into our system in terms of his athleticism and defensive prowess. All I am saying is that, overall, I think Greg is a better player and would rather have him if he wants to come back. If Greg decides to move on, Montez would be a decent pickup.

On Montez v Greg it is a close call and if the latter is back, Anderson knows what he’s doing. Nice to see options.

Saying goes that the best ability is availability so if GW back problems are chronic would not mind MM at all as he was a starter for almost all games his FR and Soph seasons.

When I read: big guard, athletic, hard nosed defender, but limited offensive game.... I think Sir Dom Pointer.

And then I watched that short video that someone posted above with a couple of Mr. Mathis's highlights... and I say to myself: That's no Sir Dom P.   It is just a reminder of what a ridiculous athlete Pointer was. He has super rare athleticism.  It's too bad Pointer didn't start to improve his shooting until he'd already spent a lot of time G league.
