SJU Portal Targets

Chatter from a few folks I respect that SJU is going to look at Dillon Michell at Cinci now, if he enters portal. A few posters here have also messaged me w same feedback, so I am putting it here. The guy is a great athlete, not a deep shooter, but can rebound. Maybe if the rumor pans out, they would use him across the wing and four spot?
Guys should not go and look at his free throw %s..

He is a high major athlete who can fill a ton of holes for us defensively and on the glass. I would really wonder what that means for a guy like Prey. I would not trade him out for Mitchell but that’s just my opinion. Hopefully we could have both.

He's also the way to solidify your defense. No matter combination in college basketball than Zuby/Mitchell.
Good point as a scouting report details;

Dillon Mitchell is known for his versatile and impactful defense, excelling as a switchable defender capable of guarding both forwards and guards, with athleticism allowing him to cover the court effectively and hustle for rebounds and loose balls.

Here's a more detailed look at Mitchell's defensive strengths:
  • Athleticism and Versatility:
Mitchell possesses elite athleticism, allowing him to jump high, rebound, and move quickly on the court.

  • Switchable Defender:
He can comfortably guard both forwards and guards, making him a valuable asset in various defensive schemes.

  • Hustle and Work Ethic:
Mitchell is known for his willingness to hustle and do the "dirty work" on the defensive end, often diving for loose balls and closing out shooters.

  • Rebounding:
He is a high-level rebounder who can initiate the break.

  • Defensive Playmaking:
Mitchell has shown an ability to make defensive plays and has improved as a defensive playmaker.

  • Examples of Defensive Skills:
    • He can cover the court in trapping schemes, be switchable in the half-court, versatile in ball-screen coverages, and provide shot-blocking from the weakside of the floor.

    • He turns his hips well when defending and has good footwork, getting himself in good position to rebound the ball.

    • He can guard the opposing team's best player.
  • Similarities to Derrick Jones Jr.:
Mitchell displays similarities to Derrick Jones Jr. as a left-handed, highly versatile defender who can jump out of the gym.

The Prey thing makes me nervous because I want him for two more years here. But this also feels like a "national title contender problem" that teams seem to have.

Could there be enough time for all three if Hopkins is more of a 3 on offense, we go slow with his playing time in Nov/Dec (meaning 20-24 minutes instead of 30), and we see some limited minutes of Prey/Mitchell/Zuby?

I dunno. But this is a path to keeping a top 10-15 defense in the country. Mitchell is the type of guy to also clean up defensive mistakes by our backcourt.

Think I’d prefer Dioubate.

If Vince (and maker) never saw the court then there would be enough time for those three in the front court.

He’s an extremely undersized 2. Do see some untapped potential if Rick could unlock that left hand in his personal development workouts. The defense is the bigger question.
Yeah which is why it's a bit puzzling to me. Assuming Sellers comes aboard, 2 is the last position we need another body at, but staff likely feels they need a guy that can play point in a pinch and he's the best option as of now

I’d take either obviously. We need to build some length and defense into this front court.

I just don’t understand why Prey doesn’t play the 5. He’s 6’10 230. Nobody backed him down all year in the post. Pitino has him pressing full court on wings and he looked more than fine.
Your theory of the Europe contract stipulating developing at the 4 makes a lot of sense, along with Rick talking about lack of communicating. you'd think the latter will get resolved this summer if he's here the whole time.

I remember Mitchell's name was kicked around a bit this time last year too. Can he play alongside Hopkins and Zuby/Vince? Would be great defensively, but would clog the lane up offensively.

Seems staff is really targeting depth this year, specifically guys that are very experienced. Would guys like Mitchell and Huff be interested in coming here to play fewer minutes? If so, great. If not, in hindsight it may have been wise to target 4 star HS kids for the backup PG and depth F roles with the hope they would develop into starters by year 2.

Agree but just speaking hypothetically, what lane is more clogged?
Zuby, Scott, RJ, Kadary or
Zuby, Mitchell, Hopkins, Sanon
