I completely agree with you, but it likely stems from the desperation of not wanting to lose what was just experienced for the first time in a quarter century. There should be an online doc which prescribes a few Valium to anyone who can prove they are a long time St. John’s fan during portal season!
We will find a point guard. With the scoring that Sanon and Hopkins add we can afford a past first point guard who can shoot at least as well as Smith. There are plenty of other scorers and guys that can replace Scott out there. There is a lot of competition for players especially with so many new coaches but we have the advantage of advanced scouting. We also have a number of guys still likely to return like Wilcher who definitely can get better, Prey, Glover, Lefty, Ayo and Maker can all improve if they stick around and all have at least a year in the system. We will be fine.
I tend to agree. Wouldn’t be surprised if Hurley gave more assurances to team Demary that he would start at pg.
Staff really liked Thornton, probably their favored portal PG, but knew even if he entered it would be competitive hunt. Disappointing to not have a chance at him, but onward.

In a supplementary sense agree completely. Find some combos and some forwards like Watts from Wash. State.
But you need a primary ball handler.
One down unfortunately w Thornton out of play apparently.
And at the very least, would have occupied some other schools interest
imho no need to panic with our new strengths - they include of course it’s our HC, $ boosters, MSG, we the loyal fan base and our once regal basketball history - we were once in the top 3-5 in all time Ws!

The standards and expectations are much higher this year. We're trying to make third weekend. Each of those teams have legit ball handlers.
In our current portal world, I doubt anyone would be surprised if the Thornton situation ends up the complete opposite of what happened to Vince.
Not saying it will happen, but we have learned to expect anything at this point.
I agree and I am concerned. This team is being set up with a lot of mouths to feed. It will need a PG with size who has a solid handle, is a good distributor, and can shoot some. That's a very specific description, there are a limited quantity of those out there, and there is a lot of competition for them.
If we don't get that then it will either be a smaller true PG or a not-PG (I am not a "combo guard" guy, you're either a point guard or you aren't) with a backup-level PG. Or ball-handling by committee which means no ball handling.
Also not enthusiastic about "we'll find a Euro," that may be fine as a stretch 4 or a shooter but in most instances probably too steep a learning curve to expect a Euro to contribute Year 1 at that position.
I think it will work out in some way, but definitely concerned. The reason Pitino struck fast in the portal with Sanon and Hopkins was because he didn't want to be in the soup later when it's chaos and programs are reaching or overpaying. May wind up there with PG.

SJ fans have a looooong history of disappointments on many fronts. Living in that state for so long it is hard for many to shake the knee jerk reaction that bad luck, misfortune and doom are ingrained.
They haven't fully bought in to the premise that Rick is going to continue to make SJ great again.
