SJU Portal Targets

I certainly hope we can get cliff or another guy with his defensive skill set but if walter clayton is really a potential option for us that has to be priority number 1. We would be so lucky to get him and not have to train a new point guard to learn his system with wilcher playing the 2.

Everyone seems to be forgetting Clayton.
“Clayton will have some pro prospects after his record-setting season as a scorer in the SEC, but he hasn’t decided on his future yet.“

“Nah,” he said. “I’m going to go back home and be with my family probably for a few weeks. And then, I don’t know what’s next.”

That definitely sounds like a guy with all options on the table.

It is so hard to even think about how this all comes together with so many options / opportunities / landmines. And each move can lead to another.

If Luis comes back I think he either has to start or be the first guy off the bench; likely at the 3. Hopkins would be a huge get (if fully healthy) to start at the 4, but if you get Hopkins in at the 4 does Zuby look to leave to start somewhere rather than come off the bench again. I know coach loves his motor and what he brings to the table (most of us do too), but does Zuby really want to be a 10 to 15 minute guy off the bench as a junior when there is so much opportunity to start at another program. Look at Omar going from five minutes a game with us to being a starter and really good piece to a team that made the NCAA tournament. Zuby could absolutely do the same.

A lot of people are lukewarm on Bensley Joseph, but if his reputation is that of a solid ballhandler who is a fierce on the ball defender then he would be a perfect PG in a system where you have three scorers along with a rim defender (hopefully Cliff). But if we can't attract dynamic scorers to fill out the rest of the roster then Joseph is maybe a liability on offense and not a wise roster addition. A guy like him would be great in one situation, but maybe hurt you in another.

I don't envy our coaching staff when trying to pull all of this together. With all players basically being free agents between now and when the portal closes you have to ensure you cater to the guys on the team you want to keep while attracting players that help the system without threatening the guys you want to retain. Rick says Simi is the future of St. John's basketball and he has shown flashes, but another year of 8 to 10 minutes off the bench will surely scare him away. He has to get solid minutes to keep him happy with some coming at the point to develop that side of his game.

Then I think about Taylor who I would love to have back for his leadership, defensive prowess and character, but how does he fit in when you think about some of the names that are being tossed out. Does he just get pushed into a limited role and if he sees that as an real possibility then does he hit the portal after the roster starts filling out?

My head is spinning.

Trilly reported what Clayton made at Florida last year. Gonna go up. But even if it tripled, if we are as willing to $pend as some say, then we should be right in the discussion.
