SJU Portal Targets

I think I do this to torture myself, but we are underrating Watkins a bit. It's interesting to see how disappointed we all were about Omier, but now not getting as hyped about Watkins (or maybe we've all learned to be more cautious than optimistic).

Portal rankings are always pretty stupid, but can give some context.

On3 (a site that refuses to believe the BE exists for some reason):
Omier -- #2, 97.42 grade
Watkins -- #6, 96.90

Kadary and Smith are #22 and #23 with 95s.

247:
Kadary -- #1, 97
Omier -- #5, 97
Watkins -- #10, 96
Smith -- #13, 96

Staff, either way with how this shakes out, truly did an excellent job this portal season.

Not the college basketball way any longer.
Shouldn’t get attached
It is kind of surreal that the sport has moved beyond the student athlete model and the kids get paid, yet the NCAA still clings to inconsistent treatment like this for eligibility, etc.

(Note: I am an adherent of the old, now abandoned, student athlete model, but it is hypocritical, pointless and contrary to current reality that they would have any criteria like this at all at this point).

Never really was, just out in open now but it is like when you find out wrestling is scripted.

Honestly, what is the purpose of even having the NCAA any more? Free movement and paid athletes basically takes away any thing they were trying to prevent. Get rid of them, put together a group of conference commissioners for seeding in the basketball tournament and use a combination of the AP and coaches polls for football playoffs. Then with no NCAA there is more revenue for the schools even after revenue sharing with the athletes

I wonder if it has to do with fit in relation to the current roster. Omier seemed like the perfect fit for the roster. Watkins seems like more of a luxury, not exactly the PF type we were pining for, and certainly will take minutes from our forwards who chose to stick around.

A fair point.

It is definitely a fit thing. You could roll out Omier as your 5 all day.

Watkins is arguably the more talented prospect.

Both of you are probably right. The extra 20lbs on Omier also fits more of the traditional PF mold that people have in mind when thinking of roster construction.

But in terms of Pitino system fit, Watkins is an A+ fit there. The disruptiveness on the press and switching on everyone defensively, plus the ability to hit an open jumper, is really exciting to think about.

The weather

That's pretty boring out here, despite the May Gray/June Gloom but i could enthrall the board with odes to traffic and descriptions of the circuitous routs I take to get from point a to point b. Is that something you might be interested in?

Would the conferences still feel obligated to include the likes of the MEAC, Sunbelt, American East, etc?

Because of the answer is no, which I think it would be, it’s only a matter of time until that same question gets moved down to.. are they obligated to include the Big East?

Within a few years, the power football conferences will leave ncaa and have their own association. They will have taken more football schools into the group before they leave. Such as 4-5 football schools currently in ACC. They will control tv contracts and run their own post season tournaments. Their media income plus nil backing will outstrip all other schools. None of the new association income will be shared with NCAA. Big east will only be able to play all other schools left behind. It’s a money grab. Only an antitrust lawsuit by Big East will stop it. Van Akerman is not the leader who can handle this. She is already allowing the ncaa settlement to burden big east schools with a wholly disproportional share of the settlement costs. Even though football schools benefited far more than big east from past practices. She needs a war time consigliere.
