SJU Portal Targets

I would be careful a wee bit about Smith being the second coming. I have never seen him play but was cautioned by someone who saw about 10 of his games this year that he is a good player, no question, but his stats were somewhat inflated by a terrific 4 game NIT run, particularly in 3 point shooting and assists.
Anyway, he was 10-13 from 3 which drove his % over 40. Those games certainly count obviously but in his previous 33 games shot 33%, which in itself was above his previous 3 year numbers, 28% twice being his previous highs.
Assists wise he had 38 in the 4 games, a terrific number, which drove his game average over 7; in the previous 33 games, he averaged 4.8, which was .5 an assist lower per game than Jenkins, and for Smith, a full assist a game higher than his best previous.
I realize these types of posts attempting to share a possible touch of realism regarding players very few of us have seen play are not really welcome, so please take it fwiw to you. ;)
That’s like 2 posts of yours I have agreed with. Now I am starting to worry.

Deivon Smith
Regular season averages (22 games): 12.6 ppg, 6.6 assists, 5.7 rebounds, 1 steal, 2.5 turnovers, 2 fouls. 45% FG, 34% 3pt, 70% FT.

Regular season averages in games he started (15 games): 15 ppg, 7 rebounds, 8 assists, 1 steal, 3 turnovers, 47% FG, 31% 3pt, 69% FT

Postseason averages (CT and NIT, 6 games): 16 points, 8 rebounds, 9 assists, 1.5 steals, 3 turnovers, 50% FG, 61% 3pt, 61% FT

Definitely valid to question what his 3pt shooting will look like next year. Still think he's a great addition (don't think anyone was questioning that). He's better suited for our uptempo pace compared to Utah's, but on the other side of the token, one can argue he was surrounded by more shooters which gave him space.

So you’re saying he played his best games in the post season against legit competition?

No, I’m saying he had a terrific 4 game NIT that were statistically significantly better than he played in his 100 previous games, hence take it fwiw. You want to rave over guys you never saw play, knock yourself out.

Are you going back to include games from his previous season in that total?

Take out the NIT and Smith averaged 6.7 assists on the season.

Edit: Just looked, over his previous 33 games prior to the NIT (spans over 2 seasons) he averaged 6 assists.
You are correct, my bad, I did not factor in that Smith only played in 28 of Utah’s 37 games, so I am completely off. My apologies…………

I’d sign up for the 22 game stretch at the top and not look back. Obviously he’s capable of more which would be great and not totally unexpected.

Not perfect, had a cluster of clunkers, but far more good-great regular season games and just damn impressive all-in. Glad to have the guy and expect him to ignite our pace most games.

It’s a interesting fact that for eternity or , at least , the last couple of years , every Recruit or Portal transfer we get is deemed to be a terrific player and will lead us to new heights .
Unfortunately , good Players they may be , they haven’t played a game yet .
And , it won’t be until the games start in November that our posters here will begin to Edit their pre season accolades .
We see it already with our additions so far .
Richmond and Smith will be All BE selections . Scott will be a key contributor and likely starter .
Vince will surprise with his offense . And , so on

It’s like these Players are new Toys at Christmas , making us forget about last Christmas’s Toys . Wilcher , Dunlap , Zuby , RJ
And , if you notice , our 2 new true Freshman , Lefty and Glover barely get a mention .

Just saying . But , it will be interesting to see who among the new group , as well as old, gets to be the next target of comment . Good and bad .

Nature of the beast.

Nuance is not a collective strength of this forum.

Players have strengths and weaknesses.

The key is fit. E.g., Richmond has a strong handle and can create but can’t shoot…Scott can shoot but is not a great at creating. He will need guys like Smith and Richmond to set him up and, in return, his shooting ability spaces the floor for them to create.

Trilly on Mitchell: "Yep - been saying with him there’s no specific timeline. Think he’ll just pop whenever he finds something he likes. Was told it’s a little messy behind the scenes with his people so if Auburn can figure that part out they’ll be in a good spot. Supposed to visit St. John’s later this week."
