SJU Portal Targets

Maybe this is too simplistic, but I'm kind of seeing our targeting through this lens (w/out independent sources)

Jenkins → ____ portal replacement (lead guard)
Soriano → ____ portal replacement (defensive-minded center)
Alleyne → ____ portal replacement (ideal world 3/D guard)
Ledlum → ____ portal replacement (banger down low who can play better defense in space + more reliable 3)
Taylor → ?
Luis → ?

Wilcher Wilcher, but hopefully ready to play 20 mpg
Zuby Zuby, but hopefully ready to play 20 mpg at 4/5 in Ledlum+ role
Dunlap Dunlap, but hopefully ready to play 20 mpg in Mason Miller type role

Davis Jaiden Glover (spot minutes, but at wing)
Conway Lefteris Liotopoulos (spot minutes)
Traore Khaman Maker (spot minutes but at center)
Ayo → no replacement, unless a can't miss player comes around

The Taylor/Luis thing is going to be a very interesting calculation for staff.

Agree. If we landed Omoruyi, Dubar and McDaniel and retain Wilcher, Dunlap, and Ejafor plus the 3 incoming freshmen you have the makings of a team (and the beginning of some potential continuity). If you return Taylor and/or Luis great; if not then you know the other 2-3 pieces you need to add (basically a power forward, a wing, and a combo-type guard)
I don't think those names outside of Omoruyi will eventually match what they land but yes that is the basic plan. I do believe at least one of Taylor/Luis if not both end up staying.

Would expect more from Glover, at least in the Dunlap type sense but would imagine a tad more. Not expecting 20 minutes by any means.

I didn't want to mix-match existing players with new players but that's a rough sense of my expectation as well. Davis' injury makes that look like a more stark drop off than it is. He played 6mpg and Dunlap played 12. So If it's in that middle range + some random games he plays 20, I agree.

3 pt shooting from guards is gravy to me. Obviously would LOVE it but we absolutely need dogs to defend and push the pace first and foremost. We can’t be caught in half court battles 50 possessions a game.

Wilcher has a good looking shot, Brady will be shooting daggers in secondary transition with good guard play, Taylor has proven he can hit set shots off drive and kicks, and Glover and Lefty can shoot.

The only transition we got from defense this year was Luis’ goofy 6’7 one-handed ass going coast to coast. That’s crazy to think about from a Pitino team.

I want two guards to be more annoying and disruptive on defense than Marillac and Mullin’s Revenge discussing Jenkins.
Maybe it’s just me, but I’m tired of using defense to create offense as the primary. How about we use offense to create offense? Three point threats are a key to spreading the floor. Half court sets, moving the ball around, moving without the ball, screens, dribble drives, kick outs, interior cuts, interior passing. Then use great D to create transition baskets as a supplement to our offense. I think that’s what RP does.

Nice synopsis, the only thing that may change is playing Glover at the two. He’s athletic enough and Pitino likes big guards. Plus if Luis stays, he may get more opporrunity there.

I do think this is too simplistic. We aren’t replacing, we are rebuilding.

I don't see a Dingle replacement. He came on huge at the end of the year and was a big piece. A more athletic shooter would be my preference from the portal.

I think RP may move Wilcher to the SG. He seems to love him. I'd love to see the development, but I am skeptical. If so, we still need an Alleyne replacement. If not, Wilcher would be our combo guard and we need a starting SG.

Rick has said combo guard for some time

My very early assumption is:

Portal PG
Wilcher
Portal C
Luis (pending return)
Dunlap/Glover/Portal Wing fighting it out for the 5th starting spot

Bench: Taylor (pending return), Ejafor, Maker, The Greek, the 2 players who don't get the starting wing spot, another portal-er or two.

If he brings in both a PG and a SG who are ahead of Wilcher then he may not start, but I think he will. If Luis leaves that opens up a major need in the starting lineup (scoring and rebounding). I don't see Ejafor starting unless we get wiped out in the competition for a portal C

We need a guard that can create their own space and rise up for a jump shot. Wilcher is not that. I like Wilcher and maybe he can grow into the role but I am not sure we put all of our eggs in his basket. We need another athletic shooter.

Pope or Davis fit that mold. I'm not as down on Davis as others are, but it would be with the caveat that he's off the bench.
