Sincerest welcome to the SJU family!

There is nothing more gratifying to a faithful alum than to welcome a athlete or student that shares the same passion for our school.

Heron goes 6'5 218, and averages about 6 rebounds per game. Also an 80% FT shooter. Simon goes 6'5, 215, and grabbed 7 boards per game. Ponds, while only 6'1, grabbed 5 rebounds per game.

Hard not to be very excited.

Mustafa, welcome!
We already had the best rebounding back court in the country. Figueroa + Williams will be pluses there as well. Dixon, who I think becomes the true wildcard if Heron is cleared, is bigger than Ponds and Lovett.
Sort of like having the tallest dwarfs? Hottest ugly girls?
Sort of kidding. Looking forward to next year especially if Herron eligible. Guards are going to have to rebound considering the one forward that is going to start doesn't rebound. Still against some team this will be a problem.
It wasn’t a problem for Vilanova’s 2009 Final Four team. Their was eerily similar to ours now. The only big they had was Dante Cunningham and they had one legit forward Rashard Anderson I believe. The rest were very talented guards. Scotty Reynolds, Redding etc.

IF Mustapha is eligible to play in 2018-19, his commitment to St. John’s is a game-changer.
It simply is no longer a primary concern that we lack big ‘depth’, while very talented guards / wings shred opposing defenses, and we grab rebounds with tenacious ‘help’ board tactics.
This will be a special high-scoring / high-energy team.
Thank you for committing to St. John’s Mustapha.
I pray your Mom’s health improves.
I bet she loves the idea of you playing closer to home and here’s hoping she sees you play often.
25 wins, baby! See you at the Dance.
Get your puppies set Mustapha...and then a sweet kiss off the glass (Rafferty)

For what it’s worth, I took a look at the applicable criteria for family hardship waivers.
See link below. Not meant to be discussion on Heron’s individual case (as certain points would likely involve speculation involving personal circumstances, e.g., nature of the illness; student-athlete’s responsibilities), but rather posting as an informational point as I’m sure many are curious as to the relevant factors. As long as an application involves a true issue and is made in good faith, it is hard to imagine the NCAA denying it — but the NCAA doesn’t appear to always follow a consitent, logical and fair path.

Thanks MB. I think I’ve scanned that piece, but I’ll peruse it again.
Yes, the NCAA has been woefully inconsistent with transfer rules, particularly the hardship waiver—which at one time was a veritable ‘free lunch’ but lately has been rarely granted.
Just guessing here, but we do know that timing is everything, and it may be that in the current mix of colllege hoops, a player’s ‘right to transfer’—so long restricted by coaches and colleges, may be given a much longer ‘leash’.
The NCAA is about to vote on (and likely permit) players to transfer and be immediately available to play if their GPAs are above 3.0, as well as allowing transfers if a coach leaves—the effective dates for these still uncertain.
Also, I bet the Heron family scoped things out with both the NCAA and even Auburn prior to his decision to leave the Tigers.
Que sera sera.

I know much of what we think is self serving, but I really wonder if its in the best interest of Heron to play this season if family obligations require him to be attentive to his mom's illness.

I know Rysheed Jordan's mom was ill and sometimes I wonder how much his criminal actions were influenced by a really bad family situation and if any of it could have been averted. All I do know for certain he ruined a chance to make money playing professionally somewhere, and instead is in a prison cell.

I hope whatever determination the NCAA makes, and however that impacts Heron, is in his best interests and not necessarily ours.

Totally agree, Beast.
Mustapha's mother and the family's needs must prevail over ours.
Whatever is best for them.
Curious, does the rule allow a player time off to be with his family and not 'count' toward his years of playing eligibility?
Kind of a moot issue with a player of his caliber--but i wonder.

Reports indicate his mom wants him to attend school and be happy by playing the game he loves. If he didn't play he would still have the same train ride from Grand Central to Waterbury. Playing or not playing doesn't shorten the 2 1/2 hr ride.

Sometimes thats a lot easier emotionally to take your mind off of things.

I’m saddened by the circumstances that brought Mr Heron to Queens and hope we can support him in any way he needs, but I’m happy he chose our family. Time to go hunting in the Big East again

Mike can make some good money being the redmen.com designated driver after our 2 msg games next year for the Long Island contingent. Will be cheaper for me than sitting in penn station waiting for the freaking Huntington train stuffing myself with shake shack

Indyredmen97, seems like we heard very little from you this past year. Hope we hear more from you this coming season.

You weren't looking forward to a starting backcourt of Lovett and Ponds? You weren't looking forward to any of the tourney teams of the Lavin era? You weren't looking forward to seeing a top 3 recruiting class on the court even if you knew they'd be overmatched? The only team in the last 8 years I wasn't looking forward to watching was Mullin's first.
