[quote="MBaldi" post=287735]For what it’s worth, I took a look at the applicable criteria for family hardship waivers.
See link below. Not meant to be discussion on Heron’s individual case (as certain points would likely involve speculation involving personal circumstances, e.g., nature of the illness; student-athlete’s responsibilities), but rather posting as an informational point as I’m sure many are curious as to the relevant factors. As long as an application involves a true issue and is made in good faith, it is hard to imagine the NCAA denying it — but the NCAA doesn’t appear to always follow a consitent, logical and fair path.

Thanks MB. I think I’ve scanned that piece, but I’ll peruse it again.
Yes, the NCAA has been woefully inconsistent with transfer rules, particularly the hardship waiver—which at one time was a veritable ‘free lunch’ but lately has been rarely granted.
Just guessing here, but we do know that timing is everything, and it may be that in the current mix of colllege hoops, a player’s ‘right to transfer’—so long restricted by coaches and colleges, may be given a much longer ‘leash’.
The NCAA is about to vote on (and likely permit) players to transfer and be immediately available to play if their GPAs are above 3.0, as well as allowing transfers if a coach leaves—the effective dates for these still uncertain.
Also, I bet the Heron family scoped things out with both the NCAA and even Auburn prior to his decision to leave the Tigers.
Que sera sera.
