Simple Question…. If Anderson is retained, where does everyone stand?

Pitino would be the only coach I'd be upset if we won't go after... Otherwise, I'd keep Anderson, just not to eat the $.. I don't believe any other coach we'd replace him with would move the needle in the short term to get notably better results, increase fan interest and $ support. So, as much as I think he needs to go, I'd live with him if not Pitino.

With this, I dont think they will go after Pitino as I really don't think there is enough people involved who can influence or make decision who have real vision to change, make bold moves, take some calculated risks...
Not sure I follow the logic on this one. The longer you keep Anderson the bigger the hole becomes and the longer it takes to dig out of it. In 3 years from now instead of being in year 3 of a new coach building the program the way he wants it you'll be in year 1, two years behind. Why would you just punt on one or two seasons when you don't have to?

If they keep Anderson for year 5 then there's no reason to think they won't keep him for year 6 too.

I think anyone else we'd likely replace him with will get similar mediocre results..(standings, recruiting, fan interest). School is not going to invest to support any new coach to attract better recruits, attract more fans, So, why pay a buyout?

Mug, anyone other than an elite coach will make no difference. Guaranteed we'll be looking for a new coach in 4-5 years because the he'll be no different. Coach K would because he's an elite coach. I'll take rat face if he gets us a NC, even back to the elite 8.
Bottom line, just get SJU to matter again like they freaking used to. That's what I want so damn bad.
Just to matter again.

If that's the attitude the school is going to take then might as well move to the MAAC. I understand unsexy names like Matt Langel could be just as mediocre as CMA and keep us in this purgatory but they also could end up being our version of Steve Pikiell.

I think true fans will always root for St. John's.
The question is how many will continue to provide financial support to the program what influence will any big donors have in the decision.

If Anderson is retained I don't see any changes in the staff makeup. Sorry but you all have to stop using "get the right assistant" excuse for a coach's inadequacies. We used it with Lavin, Mullin and now Anderson.
That's not to say that with very talented players even an assistant can win games. Look at Texas!

That's not our case. We have one very good player coming in but we don't know who's leaving. We're not in the race for many players who are program changers.
Will Posh radically improve over this mediocre year where he was once thought of as an All Big East player?
Who will man the center position if Soriano leaves?
How well will this staff play the transfer market?

There are two absolute truths about this team:
1. They will not be invited to the NCAA or NIT.
2. This staff got 4 years to make post season noise and failed miserably.

Yeah lets keep on gambling, like the last 7 coaches.

I don't get how keeping Anderson, a guy who has proven he won't succeed here, would be a better result than trying to strike gold with a young coach who could end up being a star. If the young guy fails we're in the same position we are in now with CMA so what's the downside?

I just don't trust these people to hire the right guy, we just do it over and over, and over. That's why no more hope and pray, and sick of hoping that this is the guy that can turn it around, then 4-5 years we get smacked in the face, yeah the jokes on you sju, we suck again.
Oh well time for another search.
I did hope and prays for 20+ years, I'm done with that. I want a sure thing now.

I think we're in complete agreement on the Pitino thing. Obviously he's the only right choice that might consider coming here. That's the problem though, short of some sort of miracle no other "sure things" would consider this job as it stands right now. With that being considered, I think you have to roll the dice and hope to find the next rising star that will turn this program around and leave for a true blue blood after 6 or so years. Even if it doesn't work out it can't be much worse than the current situation.

There's one thing you're forgetting, we'll buy out cma at 8mill, then hire a up and comer who is a maybe for 2 mill?
Spending 10 mill in the off season is alot of money for a maybe. Then the extra 2mill per for the next 4 year?
You better hope that he's the one.

Isn't my money. If the new guy isn't the one and we slip further into the DePaul realm then I guess I'll find a new hobby

Well said Otis and thank you.

I've been an SJU fan for just a bit shy of 50 years and, as a self-adopted son, I will never, ever stop rooting for the Red and White. It doesn't mean I am not pissed and disappointed along with everyone else. PS - I'll never leave the site unless it is shut down or Paul asks me to do so as I have too many friends here.
Well said, ohiofan. Feel the same, but I've got an additional 10 years on you. (OMG, that's 60 years!)

I'm 40 years into this crazy obsession and there's no sense in giving it up now -- although this may be the first season I've found our troubles bordering on laughable. I didn't make a donation to the Red-White Club this year (for a couple reasons not related to the coach) and will wait to see how this plays out before making a decision on next year.

with your fantasy football winnings since joining our redmen.com fantasy football league you should be buying us a new arena

I won't stop watching, but I need to see Posh, Wusu, Soriano, Storr, Pinzon, Lendeborg, and Gardner in uniform next season to come close to canceling out negative feelings about possibly more of the same coaching.

The risk is there that you really hamstring the next coach with an empty roster if you retain CMA and we have another .500-ish season. I don't think we get many early commits next season.

Will always root for this st John’s basketball team. That being said. It’s too soon yet for this question I think even though we only have a handful of games left.

Do we run the table during the regular season finish? Do we run the big east tourney? If we finish with a flurry and coach stays I’m sure even those who want him out can’t say much if we do that.

Me personally I was happy with the hire. But there is a limit to not meeting expectations etc. During the terrible play for the extended period this year even coach Anderson supporters starting feeling like enough is enough myself included. I have never been apathetic toward losses until this year which is saying a lot. So anyway. Let’s see how we really finish up. Then I think we can give more accurate responses to this.
