Sima Transferring

If you watched the bench last night, you'll know that there is no way this turns into a mutiny. Kids seem happy and really get along; tight knit group. This surprises me, for sure, but if there was going to be anyone mid-year I had to figure it would be him.

I actually told a fellow poster after last night to expect Sima to transfer. He is not a fit with a guard oriented offense which requires a fast tempo and even wants the guards to rebound .I also suspect some of our posts may have provided incentive

If true there will be times he will be missed this season because of foul trouble or injury but on the whole this is a sign the program is on the rise. Sima practices with Clark, sees the improvement in Owens and knows Brown and possibly another big is coming in next year. He can get more playing time somewhere else and Matt can bring in another recruit.

FWIW this only puts STJ at the limit of 13 schollies for next year, they were "over" before Sima decided to leave. Of course Paultz advises that Darien will be gone next year so that gives the staff one ride to give.

What benefit does he have of transferring mid-year? Will he be eligible halfway through next season? If so I can sort of understand him jumping ship.

Obviously don't know details but not a good sign of character that the moment things start looking down you bounce. Would prefer a kid who gets motivated by pitfalls rather than looking to leave. Nonetheless he is young and wish him luck.

Yes, exactly right. Would be eligible second semester next season.[/quote. But the net result would be loosing a year of PT as opposed to transferring at the end of the year. W someone as raw as Sima that would have made more sense.

Exactly, he now loses the second semester of this year and the first semester of next year, his junior year. So he winds up losing a little less than half a year both seasons unless he decided to sit out all of next year along we this half year. He would get two full seasons that way instead of a year and a half.

It is better for us that Sima decided to transfer now (as opposed to the end of the season). IMO, this year is a developmental year anyway, so not much is lost this year. Matt can now target graduate seniors to help us next year, when I expect us to be very competitive, while simultaneously recruiting 2018 players for Sima’s roster spot. Alternatively, Matt can focus on recruiting JUCO players to help us up front next year. Either way, it probably gives us a 4 month head start, which I assume will help a bit.

I'm sure others will transfer our. I could see Ali leaving as a graduate transfer. Maybe that was his intention when he came back to avoid sitting out a year.

He's a true junior, so I believe he would have to sit out next year anyway, if he leaves.

A graduate transfer who is a powerful rebounding center with moderate offensive skill is a must get for success next year. Turn a loss into a gain.

Unless he graduate this year, which is admittedly unlikely.

A bit surprising from afar, but not losing sleep over this one. Don't see a significant difference in what Sima would have provided in his limited minutes this year, and what Frued, Amar etc will provide in his absence. IMO Matt will bring someone in next year who will provide at lease as much as we would have gotten out of Sima. He may have developed in to a decent 4 year player, but he should easily replaceable. Onward and upward.

Sad to see this happen, I thought he had a ton of potential. He was great in the game against Syracuse last year. I guess he was never the same after breaking his hand. Wish him luck.

To me Tariq Owens is the key going forward. I just checked and he is listed as being 6'11". He's so thin I just assumed he was smaller. He should get in touch with our old friend Adonis DeLarosa for some diet tips! But if he keeps stepping up his performance, we'll be OK.

Any chance Sima has physical issues going on. Was watching him last night and he did not look like he was able to get around.

Given our lack of size, I can see this costing us at least a couple of games in conference play. Sure hope Zach Brown is getting it done academically. We're going to need him big time.

Watching Owens catch and finish last night IMO put him vastly ahead of what Sima can do on offense around the hoop. Defensively Owens had 4 blocks and 4 rebounds in 31 mins and 10 pts. If Sima was unhappy with playing time, though, there is no question he could have worked his butt off and proved he deserved more.

While Alibegovic has limited skills, 8 boards in 18 minutes is a lot better than Sima's 1 in 12 mins. Amar's stat line last night, despite his dreamy blue eyes, shows he is willing to follow coach's instructions and be of value under the hoop. In fact, I like his positive attitude on this roster and he is a catalyst for an infectious team spirit that is refreshing to watch.

While I am disappointed I am not surprised. Sima has been playing listless uninspiring basketball from the exhibition game. I thought he was a candidate for transfer at the end of the season because, as I stated in a previous thread, Sima seemed deflated after we secured Zach Brown. He started acting like a jilted boyfriend when his girlfriend told him they should see others while still dating.
Last night he looked miserable on the bench. When he informed Mully yesterday he wanted out Mully wasted no time making him a sub and giving more minutes to two kids who wanted to play and who have played harder than him. In retrospect, Sima may not have regressed under Mullin but just did not give 100% to being the best he could be. When you play with two great guards that could have made you a focus on offense, Sima decided to become a black hole and Lovett and Ponds could no longer have confidence giving him the ball with the frequency they involve Owens. Other than blocking shots Sima was a weak defender regularly outmanuvered by smaller centers and easily beaten by quick forwards. In short, he was the main problem with our front line. Best of luck wherever you land.
Hopefully Yakwe learns from this and it sparks a fire in his belly because he too has been dragging ass most of the season. If Marvin Clark is kicking his ass in practice he should use that as motivation to improve his game instead of worrying about next year. Thankfully both Mullin and Mitch have had to deal with their own teenagers and I am sure that they are providing parental counseling to the younger players like Yakwe and Ponds.
Again, I am not surprised and fully expected a grad transfer to augment the front line next year. Leaving at midyear is a sign of the kid's immaturity and overblown expectations as he would have needed at least 4 full years and more to become a possibility for the pros in the States. I think he has Europe on his mind as his future and, again, best of luck.

I liked him even though he definitely regressed this year. I wish him well

I really hope Owens can get another 20 pounds of muscle by next year. How good would Jones or Livingston look right now :)

For me the downside is once we get to big east play and start playing more physical teams that we could use him assuming he started playing better. If it costs us one game this year thats one game too much since we need all the wins we can get for recruiting

It is what it is though. Not really anyones fault. If we are going to play uptempo and run and shoot 3's then maybe an Owens type of player is better suited for what Mullin wants to play

There definitely was something that was impacting Sima's game. As someone said the stat that screams at you is the blocked shots. Last year he was one of the best in the country and this year he has five blocks in ten games. He did work hard on his free throw shooting which should help him wherever he transfers too. He seems like a good kid and teammate and hopefully if he is healthy he can turn into a decent big man. He should definitely look to transfer somewhere that has had success with big guys.

We definitely lose a little this year with fouls but prefer Owens because he runs the court better.

It is what it is he did not fit Wish him the best
