@Seton Hall, Tue., Jan. 16, 8:30p, FS-1

Thing that pissed me off about last night is that seton hall roster talent wise is just decent, nothing mind blowing, but they showed up ready to compete and outworked us into a blowout. Whether Rick was on the sidelines or not, that’s a bummer. That hasn’t happened to us really since the Michigan game, and due to our improvement I didn’t think it would happen again.

But it just goes to show that if you don’t show up with your A game in the Big East, you will pay for it. That’s why I gotta stop counting the DePaul/GTown games as wins. Nothings an easy win until you go out and make it so

Onto the next I guess
It’s more then just not showing up, the team was completely out strategized, and the Hall was well prepared for everything we threw at them. Saying we didn’t show up gives the staff an out for the team being poorly prepared.

The Seton Hall staff deserves allot of credit for exposing our players weaknesses and our offense and defensive weaknesses especially our ineffective match up zone.

Here we go. Our resident snowflakes are running around like chicken little.

I am sure Pitino will be in contact during the game. Even SJU has moved past communicating via cups attached to a string.

Holy smokes! Relax. You can pee standing up again.
Turns out the anxiety was justified sadly. This is old SJ and old Zaun stuff. Let’s please wash this away Sat or we’re in deep trouble.

Some Points:
1. Rick does make a difference. As does Dingle.
2. Glenn Taylor needs to be more patient and less cavalier with the ball.
3. Wilcher needs some work and development.
4. It was Dylan's "grudge match" because he wasn't good enough to play for a Pitino system and despite his lucky shooting night, he looks out of shape. Now that he got that out of his system, when Rick is back and the game is at UBS it will be a radically different result in a few weeks.
5. Zuby needs more minutes regularly - was a stud last night.
6. Soriano had an off-game but still should have stuck with him more and had more bigs in at once to play with Zuby.
7. Turnovers are killing us. We need to stop making silly passes. If we find ourselves getting in the mud also, we should switch to true Zone for some games not this matchup or man to man when we are so out of rhythm. We were missing so many people all over the place that just chucked up 3s.
8. Rebounding has to improve.
Pretty weak to call Wusu's night lucky and he looks out of shape. His shooting, rebounding and passing absolutely killed us last night. He outplayed every player on our roster.

Give credit where it is due.

16 points, 10 rebounds and 5 assists. I'd say that's a damn good stat line plus he hit a huge three that killed the little bit of momentum we had in the latter part of the second half.

I knew Soriano was not going to be a factor 5 minutes into the game. Lumbered up and down the court and missing easy inside shots. He was constantly out of position on defense and was easily drawn out to the top of the key where he is useless.

The question remains.....is the staff trying to correct this or is he doing it regardless of strategy.

Taylor remains an enigma. It seems unless he is wide open, he never looks for a shot.

Luis was benched because he tried to play hero ball and defensive lapses.

Mas basically threw in the towel in the second half and played our bench because it was obvious absent Pitino, some key players tried to freelance.

The Hall's defense was great and unrelenting while we relented after starting 0-10 from the field.

Short and simple they have to beat Marquette. This is not a 50 game season w wiggle room or “we peak in February” theories. Yes this is tough patch of season, but Dance teams recover from beatings and hold serve at home v quality opponents.
Not really a theory. If this team & our coach are completely healthy by February. We will be just fine IMO. Whether we beat Marquette or not this weekend.

Sure I would love to see Jenkins play a tremendously disciplined game & Soriano plays like he has been 95% of this season & our defense locks down Marquette for 40 minutes & two of Alyyne/Dingle/Taylor/Luis give us 10-14 ppg & Zuby is Zuby.

Would be nice to ROCK the Garden!

We are healthy. The only player missing last night was out backup shooting guard.

yea but Alleyne could really shoot the rock at Virginia Tech in like 2019 or whatever
Yes, because he was a player is a primary focus of the offense on the VaTech team.
Here, not so much. But Wusu was too much for him to handle last night because Wusu is aggressive and fearless. Witness his TEN REBOUNDS.

0-10….. I thought coach brought in shooters?

I don’t get the concept of thus being a transitional year. Many have pointed out that Pitinos second year at programs were better then his first and while perhaps true, that was based on him bringing in outstanding young talent and developing it. When you rely on the transfer portal to build a team, then you practically lose your entire team the following year you are starting all over again.

Coach must do better in the area if HS recruitment and develop such talent. Based on what will remain next year from what we have now, and what us recruited so far, unless we bring in some studs in the transfer portal can you really feel confident about next years results?
I've always thought next year could be worse, regardless.

Now, if he can get some good, lateral transfers (meaning from major conference teams) with more than one year of eligibility remaining, he may have something by year 3.

Richmond from Seton Hall is a great example of that. Third year with the Pirates, as a transfer from Syracuse. I just wish I had the patience for it.

Maybe Pitino has up-coached these players to where we bought in to their feaux-quality. I hope not. We lost by 15 points last night, and that did not really reflect the total beating we got.

Pitino has to work with this team to not just throw the ball into Soriano and think their job is done. Soriano has to throw the ball back out and not dribble in traffic. Never dribble when double-teamed. He needs to limit his time past the foul stripe, especially defensively.

Jenkins has to share the sugar, with less dribbling and less shooting.

Dingle needs to wake up and start scoring. Get open and shoot.

Taylor needs to play more, and to have a role, both offensively and defensively.

Wilcher needs to have his PT scripted until he gets comfortable.

Our guys need to set screens (other than Soriano). Less dribbling and more crisp passing. Read the damn court.

Luis need to play more using his head. He is an incredibly talented player, but he is a member of a team. He is not Pete Maravich.

Ledlum has been pretty steady and productive, of late.

Zuby has been a happy surprise. But please don't shoot from the outside.

Dunlap has been good, but has a lot to learn.

Traore and Conway have been fine; they are what is expected of them.

I'm not impressed with Alleyne's play. Defensive and offensive has been play marginal.

Why are you all overrating Wusu? Wow- he played a good game against us because its a grudge match against us at his now home court. His shots- he was left wide open because of defense lapses. We also had no rebounding to speak of. He runs the court looking way out of shape for his position. Please- do not give this player more than his due. He is going to be locked up next time around. He would not make it in a Pitino system period. Our system works, our players have to just step up. Wusu is an average college player that has his moments when motivated, nothing more.

All this attribution of this loss being a result of a flawed roster of mid-major players and a mid-major coach at the helm last night is maddening. For example, how is anyone qualified to question CRP's assessment of the talent on his team, when he says that Jenkins (and his other target Clayton) could have started for him on his successful Louisville teams? And were other high majors like Tennessee and Rick Barnes also wrong when they successfully recruited Ledlum? There are countless examples of players coming from non P-5 conference teams and performing well. While this team is far from perfect, it is not made up of a cast of misfits as some are painting out to be after last night's loss.
I for one do not believe the team is made up of a cast of misfits, and I do not believe they lost last night because of Masiello. I think there are some very good basketball players on the team, guys who can be significant role players on top 25 teams and perhaps even more in the case of Soriano and possibly Luis under the right circumstances. I also do not get the polarized hate for Jenkins, but I leave that for another post.

I think labeling the roster as "flawed" is incorrect and misleading. "Limited" might be a better word. I think overall there is a ceiling to potential success with this particular group of players because, simply, they are not as talented as the teams who are generally considered legitimate contenders for deep March Madness runs. Can this team win big games against top teams? Of course they can. The current team is a good team, sometimes very good when playing well, with good players, and a great coach. We did not see that team last night, but we saw it in the prior six Big East games, and I will credit those six games over last night's outlier. We can even go 10-8 or so in the Big East with some good fortune. But everyone on this forum to my knowledge - I know I do - wants more than that. We want a great team, a top 15 team, a team we expect to finish in the top 4 of the Big East and make a deep post-season run. We are not there with this team. Is that because the roster is "flawed"? I suppose if you interpret the word literally, but I don't see it that way. That is why I mentioned a transitional year in an earlier post. I pin my hopes that the glorious promised land, assuming Pitino stays healthy and this energetic and engaged, is a couple of years off, but for the first time since 2000, literally 24 years ago, it does not seem impossible.

Me when my source of escape while at work (this site) is all negative vibes after a terrible blowout loss

He torched us and was great last night. Admit it and move on.
