@Seton Hall, Tue., Jan. 16, 8:30p, FS-1

Ugly game and first truly ugly game since our 2nd preseason game. Coming after Creighton loss coach sick and maybe a few others coming down. Hey every team throws a stinker or two. This is our first true stinker of regular season . Plus hall should be ranked by now anyway . Win sat we see back on track

Whether Pitino was there or not they still lose this game and badly. Perhaps not by as big a score but by a good margin just the same. Forget the lack of hustle , energy and all that, the Hall had an answer for everything we threw at them. When we went to our porous 2-3 match up zone, they picked it apart by flashing a player to the middle, drawing Joel away from the basket and finishing with a dunk. The same goes for our full court pressure .

What many may have a hard time hearing here is that this team with overall superior talent, was not just outplayed but severely out coached in this particular game, and those posters who know the game saw that. It’s not like the Hall had a great shooting night or anything like that, they were just far better prepared.

I think it helps when the game is over early. We got absolutely ran out of of the gym. When we were down 28 it didn’t even feel that close.

Their guards are just way better. Once Alleyne checked out with 2 fouls the game was over. He’s a 5th year senior…let the kid play! He finished with three fouls too 😂
He got cooked multiple times before he picked up the second foul

I was super angry last night when I went to sleep. Now, it is just an "L" to me and it doesn't matter if it was by 2 or 22. My point is, on to the next game with hopes that this game was an ugly outlier.

We were 8-14 from the line. The Hall was 26 for 32. This was not a home whistle job. We foul way too much. The Hall was shooting free throws with 12 minutes to go in each half.

The way we defend is fundamentally flawed, far too much reaching. When you get a reputation as a team that leads the conference in fouling, you can’t expect to get the whistle in situations where you need it, such as the end of the Creighton game.

If we don’t address the way we defend, free throws will cost us more winnable games.

Not much more to be said. The reality is this is a team primarily of mid-major transfers and the results will therefore fluctuate, apparently quite wildly. Nice wins like X-Butler-Nova give delusions of sweet 16 grandeur, games like last night have us questioning whether the team will win another game. One game Luis is an NBA lottery pick, the next we have concerns the coaches are tired of him and he is an incredibly selfish player and can’t or won’t play defense. The best I can personally do is to try to keep an even, rational, intellectual approach and remember that this was supposed to be a transitional year and enjoy the high points. Easier said than done.

The most telling issue for me is the fouling. It is indicative of a fatal crack in the foundation of the team: that they are simply not quick enough to guard high end D1 guards and swing forwards, especially on the perimeter. Our defenders routinely lose 1v1 battles on the wing, and there is generally no weak side help rolling over in time. It leads to easy buckets, or even when the other team misses, our helping bigs are in reactionary mode as opposed to rebounding mode. Plus, we can’t shoot! Again, this is not rocket science; we have mid-major transfers playing against the 4 and 5 star NBA-aspiring cogs of top 25 programs like UConn and Creighton. I love Rick and I like where the program is going. I find this team enjoyable to root for and games like last night kill me. But we need better players.
I don’t get the concept of thus being a transitional year. Many have pointed out that Pitinos second year at programs were better then his first and while perhaps true, that was based on him bringing in outstanding young talent and developing it. When you rely on the transfer portal to build a team, then you practically lose your entire team the following year you are starting all over again.

Coach must do better in the area if HS recruitment and develop such talent. Based on what will remain next year from what we have now, and what us recruited so far, unless we bring in some studs in the transfer portal can you really feel confident about next years results?

Same, except I was not even that angry because the flow of the game was preparing me for a loss.

There are days when one team brings “A” effort and all their plays work perfectly while the other side does not show effort and bungles everything, you get games like this.

I was more upset after Creighton.

Now, beat Marquette.

We’re the best team in the world when we win, we’re the worst team ever in the universe when we lose by more than 10 to a good team or at all to a team “we should beat.”

I saw people on Twitter (and here) say this was the most embarrassing loss in our history like certain BE tournament shellackings never happened. Or the Robert Morris game. Or, anytime we lost to a mid-major team.

Once I saw we didn’t have Pitino or Dingle, to me, the writing was on the wall. It doesn’t excuse the WAY they lost. Like, they gave up. That sucks.

They lost a game. We’re not the bestest team ever, we’re not the worst team ever. I’d say we’re somewhere in-between, probably more toward better than worse. Let’s see how they respond before we start kicking dirt on their season.

The truth is Soriano got exposed on the defensive end. And he wasn’t scoring enough of rebounding to make it a wash.
Dingle might be more important than we realized.

yes. UConn and Creighton every opportunity to win those games.

last night I think was more in disbelief How non competitive

I knew we were in big trouble when they popped the current tourney seeds up just before the game and we were "in" at a "10" and SH was shown as an "11". I said to myself, "not a good sign." Then we missed the first 10 FGs and I KNEW the game was going to be a "L".

Safe to say after last night, we are not as bad as we looked and SH is not as good as they looked.
Time to take out frustrations on Marquette this Saturday.

As much as we all love Joel and won't dance without a big year from him, he needs to be told two things : do not drift out of the paint to double guys on offense and concentrate on rebounding the ball, which he has not been doing the past few games. And he needs to sit when he drifts away from doing those things.
As others have pointed out the team needs to stop playing defense with their hands and fouling so much. And Taylor needs to play more, he does so many things well even if he doesn't score enough.
Just hoping we don't lose any more players to sickness for the Marquette game. Last night was a good old fashioned beatdown and best way for players and fans to forget it is to come back and beat Marquette who has proven to be quite beatable this year.

I was impressed v UConn and Creighton when they made runs we had answers. Rick is big part if that, but dam broke last night & all of that is not on Mas. Let’s see if this group has mental toughness to move on prepare and pay attention to detail.

One area noted by other posters is this squad is very foul prone putting us at a disadvantage too early leading to far too many FTs.

I never thought Joel was a super star, just a good center and far better than guys we had there in recent history. I think he will get out of funk, but bigger concern who are the guys who will step up.

Jenkins has his warts, shoots a ton, but he has made big shots. To reduce his volume, yes, he needs to find guys in right spots to make plays, but not sure who that is. Dingle has really disappointed. Luis legend may have morphed into a guy w a lot of natural ability who lacks the concentration and discipline to be consistent at both ends v highlight reel fodder. Praying he buys in v auditioning for pro $ somewhere.

Beat Marquette!

There will be a game (maybe this Saturday against Marquette) where everything falls perfectly into place for SJU for a full game.

And many will inject the power of the “hot take” and go over overboard in the other direction.

These are the ebbs and flows of a long season. The wins will come. This team has had a tough schedule to start the season. No Georgetown or DePaul yet to fatten up the record.

Also, who would have thought that UConn would go on a dominating run after SJU beat them at Storrs last season.

- when you shoot as shitty as we do, expect the conference to double and triple Soriano in the post. He was visibly frustrated with some of his early misses

- tournament teams protect their home court. Enough with the talking, come out Saturday and show us

- too much one on one from Luis. You cant have that early in the game when other players are open. He got his rest which is fine.

- we reach waaaay too much and its starting to cost us

Getting beat from start to finish sucks. We as fans need to realize it’s not an issue that just St. John’s has and in fact happens often to good teams in college basketball all the time!

This year
Seton Hall - Road losses of 20, 18, & 13

CU- road loss by 21, Neutral loss by 15

MQ- road losses of 15 & 11

Nova- road loss by 13, Home loss by 13

X- road loss by 15, Home loss by 12

Prov- road loss by 21, Home loss by 20

But- road losses of 20, 16 & 14

Not that it should make us feel better about last night's shellacking, but four top 25 ranked teams (Baylor, TCU, Wisconsin & Utah State) lost road games to unranked teams last night.

Shaheen can coach, first that St. Peter's team and now with this team. They are not superstars but play the game the right way. Gritty, tough and get after you. Effort wins games.

CRP will have us doing that too. Either later this year or in the future. But you have to sit guys who are not giving you effort.

I disagree that this was our only regular season stinker. Michigan was and so was Boston College.
