@Seton Hall, Sun. Jan. 22, 12 Noon, FS1/570AM

Relatively cheap tickets are available on ticketmaster. I think I'm gonna try to make the trek to Newark with my brother.

When they are playing at a high level they really get after you defensively, especially on the perimeter. Carrington and Desi are a lot to handle. In addition to our bigs with Delgado, our guards need to be ready for one of the most physical games they've seen this year.

Agree with the suggestion to speed this game up. Not because they aren't deep (they aren't, but neither are we) but because worry they'll beat us up in half-court and faster pace could help take Delgado out of game. Quick shots from them likely preferable as well as Delgado has almost twice as many o-boards as anyone on our team (over 4 per game), so the less he has time to position himself the better.

Tough game.

I think it comes down to which two teams show up. As for Seton Hall, they had a team meeting after the beat down they got from Villanova. Now how this helps who knows? As for SJU coming off a win vs Depaul isn't that remarkable but it can be used as kind of building bock nonetheless. Bottom line for me is this: both teams see the other as a way to right the ship lets see who can take advantage hopefully it's us. WE ARE?

Would also add they are challenging for us defensively (even more than our usual challenges). Tough to zone because Carrington and Desi shoot the 3 well + difficulty of finding/containing Delgado when shot goes up. On the flip not a team we matchup well with in man because of the size, physicality, and athleticism of those same 3.

Carrington in particular is a destroyer 1 on 1. Should show him different looks but would let Malik get the first crack. Thought he had his best defensive game possibly of his career at home v. SHU last year, frustrated Whitehead for most of the game. That type of effort would be big on Carrington Sunday. Issue that creates is that Ahmed probably has to go Desi, Owens on Delgado, which would leave one of our guards on Sanogo.

Doubt we can swing that, hence the matchup issue. Either we go big with Owens and Yawke, or Ponds is going to have to be ready for perhaps the biggest defensive assignment of his college career to date in Carrington.

Winning this game could be a strong morale booster. I know the difference between a win and a loss on this board will be immense.

I am setting the under/over for Delgado rebounds at 15.

Hoping for the best.....

Don't like the idea of Ponds or Lovett on Sanoga. Wouldn't be surprised if Mullin starts both Owens and Yakwe against their big men. Unfortunately this puts Ahmed on the bench and leaves us without an offensive scorer. Can't just start Yakwe, he'll be eaten alive by Delgado. Seton Hall is desperate for a victory. Going to be a tough road test for the Johnnies.

Last season Yakwe played big minutes in both SH games and performed very well. In the first game the three guards killed us and Delgado had a good game. Second game Whitehead was really cocky but pretty much sucked and we shut down Delgado pretty good with a combination of Yakwe and if I recall correctly, Balamou and got him in foul trouble. Rodriguez had a career game.

And Powell, who shot the ball very well in non-conference play, has been in an awful slump. I've watched a few of their games and he is missing wide open looks. Has lost all confidence. Let's hope that continues at least one more game.

Powell has shot .268 (11 for 41) in his past three games, including a horrific .125 (3 for 25!) from three-point range. So looking at history (e.g., Fab Melo coming back from academic suspension and having his best game of the season in a 95-70 romp, and a moribund Andre Drummond suddenly looking like an All-American with 16 points on 7-11 shooting & 11 rebounds in a 83-69 drubbing), I fully expect Powell put up 20 points on .750 shooting on Saturday.:(

Our strategy should be Hack-an-Angel. He is terrible from the line, but great in the post. We will also have trouble rebounding over him and Ish. Ish is also a good enough on ball defender to shut down one of our big 3. This game is like all our games is going to be if we can hit a lot of threes, because we certainly will be at a major disadvantage in the paint and on the glass.

Agree completely, I was using Ponds/Lovett on Sanogo to say that lineup/matchup combination is essentially not an option.

Interested to see staff's strategy, as this one is not just about who starts but what combination plays long stretches of this game. And that combination in this one may have to be one we've used a lot less over the course of the last month. To your point think we have to go with a lot of Owens and Yawke together and we just haven't done a lot of that lately.

I'd go Ahmed along with the two guards initially. As much as I'd like to see Ellison on Carrington, even if Ellington gets the nod over Ahmed he'd probably have to guard Desi anyway. Would rather have Ahmed on Desi + the extra size he brings up front to help in general. Ponds gets Carrington to start and hopefully Lovett can be very disruptive to Jones with his quickness. When Ellison spells the guards he goes all out on Carrington. Defensive intensity and preventing second chance oppos so critical in this one.

If we start what has become our regular lineup we will need to rebound collectively off the bat or risk getting destroyed on the boards.

SH wins rebounding, second chance points & turnover wars overcoming their mediocre PG tandem.

12 point SJU loss

Carrington oversleeps, misses team bus. Delgado gets called for three fouls in the first 5 mins and is a non-factor. Willard gets teed up and ejected. Mussini has a triple-double (just to tick off Fun) and we win by 25. And then I woke up...

Based on what I read on the Seton Hall forum, I think we'd be better off with Willard being on the sidelines.

Seton Hall fans hate Willard. Holloway would be their coach and the fans would be in over the moon.
