@Seton Hall, Sat., Dec. 31, Noon, FS-1

I'm sorry, but I just don't understand the hate towards Cragg. The man single handedly brought many aspects of the athletic department out of the stone age. How easily we forget how much of a mom & pop shop this whole school was run as prior to him coming on board. The last coaching search was a total disaster that can't fully be blamed on him at all, it was out of his control. Attendance is going to be driven by having a winning program, and we certainly don't have that. But again, Cragg can't play the games on the court.
How was last coaching search out of Cragg’s control? He narrowed down the candidates, interviewed Moser and ultimately hired Mike after Jeff Capel called him to suggest he interview him. Cragg I believe was also involved in Bobby Hurley “feelers” and Tim Cluess consideration. Am I missing something? I am not suggesting Cragg be fired but clarifying the hiring process you noted.

Ok maybe a misunderstanding on my part then. I was under the impression the board/administration had essentially handcuffed Cragg, and he wasn't able to make a decision in the direction he wanted. I thought that's what was partially covered in the whole Mike Francessa/Mike Repole meltdown call.

All of this is easier said than done. Bottom line is that it takes MONEY. SJU does not have much in terms of endowment. We are lucky to have Cragg here, his bloodline of Duke and knowing the importance of a winning program are essential, he is playing the cards dealt to him here in terms of small school, no money, small campus, student body who could care less about college sports.

Admittedly it's not what it once was, but my memory of the debacle of the post Mullin coaching search is that people were speculating on good information that Cragg was somewhat hamstrung in the process by members of the old regime who wanted to go in a different direction and that when Repole was upset on the Francesa show he was saying just that. Can't recall who was most in favor of Moser but once he spurned us after Hurley had already spurned us we were looking at alternatives like the guy from Yale or Hewitt; when Capel suggested CMA and Cragg pulled the trigger a good portion of the board was very happy with the hire. I know I was.

No doubt the team's showing against Nova & Xavier and the obvious lack of strategic direction during timeouts and apparent lack of attention from several of the players to the coach has made many of us who were originally CMA supporters have major doubts. But it's also true as Dave pointed out in his podcast that there is lots of season left and time to turn things around. I take some solace from assistant coach Cleveland telling Minko on the radio post game that the staff bears some fault for the team's poor performance. Hopefully, the staff met with the players for a good give and take session between the Xavier game and the Hall game to get on the same page going forward. One thing is clear; CMA will be coach for the rest of the year and if they make the dance, he will be the coach next year. I am still hoping that happens, but not nearly as confident as I was a week or two ago.

For what's it's worth, at the time, I was in favor of Porter Moser. I recall it was not a popular choice on the board. Too early to tell how his run in Oklahoma will turn out.

I also liked Moser as a choice, remember posting a long article about him and how hard he worked to find players that fit his system. But once he was gone I was happy to get CMA.

I was totally against it. Wasn't sure if he simply caught lightning in a barrel and I found him to be a huge ham. Fast forward a few years, and I think he'd probably have us playing better D. And if you can't be a ham in NYC, where can you really be one?

That said, he didn't really want the job. He either used us from the beginning to get a reworked contract at Loyola, or he came with an open mind and hated what he saw. I think the second one is way worse than the first.

Moser leveraged us for better Loyola contract and then jumped to OU when that job opened soon after. Well played!

It is not about being on a ledge, rather the SJU margin of error is small right now due to absence of quality wins and mediocre OOC schedule. It is what it is and only cure is winning starting Sat. If not, the Dance mountain gets steeper.
Would take a massive turnaround for dance to be realistic with a loss tomorrow. Going to have to sweep more than just DePaul and Georgetown and SHU would be a good place to start
