Sampson will fit right in in the NBA

From ESPN draft analysis
JaKarr Sampson, F, So., St. John's
Sampson has the physical tools NBA scouts look for in a wing -- he's long, explosive and runs the floor well -- but he's still stuck as a tweener at the next level. He has no real jump shot to speak of, especially from beyond the arc, but lacks the physical tools to really play at the four. He has no business declaring for the draft right now, and is a borderline second-round prospect.

I'm sure this isn't news to anyone, but I just looked at a bunch of mock drafts, he isn't going to get drafted. What a shame

Either there is something we don't know about his reason to declare, or this was one of the most uninformed decisions I have seen.

I'm just really happy to be moving on without him. I hope he gets drafted and I will always cheer for him, because he seems like a great kid. He chose St. John's twice, and I won't forget that.

There was a chance he could have been a BEAST for us next season, but realistically it would likely have been more of the same. Lavin gives his guys too long of a leash and too much control over what happens out there. For that reason alone, I'd rather bring in someone that has rebounding and staying around the basket as part of their basketball DNA. A kid like Thomas, who we won't have to worry about drifting on the three point line and trying to take 2-3 guys off the bounce. The sad thing is Lavin would probably let him do that if he wanted, but I suspect that would be as foreign to him as hitting the boards is for Dom.

It seems the kid is content making an nbdl roster or some smaller pro league. While he won't be millionaire it sounds like he just wants to get paid.

Exactly! It is senseless to relentlessly talk about him not being NBA ready. That is probably true, but who cares. What's done is done. I wish him well. It is his decision.

They say that patience is a virtue/ It seems obvious that most of these players, especially those who have AAU people whispering in their ear, do not have patience. The smart move was to leave next year when the draft is weaker and when he had another year under his belt but that doesnt please the "agents and advisors" who want their paycheck yesterday.

Andersen and La Vine both declared yesterday also, 2 more kids that would prob go ahead of Sampson. I hope he signed that deal with an agent in invisible ink

I also think it's a very loooonng shot that his number will be called, but if JR Smith can get his brother a roster spot with the Knicks, albeit only for a New York minute then his comrade Lebron I'm sure will speak highly of his potential and his athleticism during summer games, where no one plays defense. That being said, I do wish the best for Jakarr. After all, he is part of the SJU family for life.

If by probably you mean definitely...I agree.
I wish him well. It would be great for him and us if by some miracle he could get drafted, but realistically I hope he has his mind set on Europe and making (and saving) as much as he can the next ten years. The NBDL willl just take years and dollars away from him.

Does anyone have a handled on European salaries? I do know it varies by country/league. Realistically, is Jakarr going to make more than 200K a year?

I agree, I like Jakarr and wish him well. It just pains me, because I think this was an incredibly poor decision. I am sorry for him.

The worst part about basketball players staying in the USA and playing in the D-league is the fact that most D-league salaries range from only $12,000 to $24,000. Average overseas players can get a $65,000 contract with ease. Depending on the league that players get into in Europe, salaries can start as high as $100,000. Not only is there a big discrepancy between the salaries, but the money made in Europe is typically tax free. The club oftentimes will pay your taxes to the country you are playing in. That American who is playing overseas may also receive credit with the United States government for paying their taxes. Further, most European clubs commonly pay for a player’s living expenses. That includes providing a player with a car and lodging. So the player in Europe can be saved from taxes and the more expensive living expenses.

Sampson just named to the All Met Second Team
And you still think he will get drafted?
If you do, please send me a PM - I have a few acres of swamp land available for sale in New Jersey......

From what I've heard from friends who played abroad is that actually getting a club to honor your full contract is the biggest challenge. Most of them have been severely screwed over at some point.
