Sampson BE Rookie of the week

#4

“@BigEastMBB: Cincinnati G Sean Kilpatrick (27.0 ppg, 5.0 rpg) is 1/21 BIG EAST Player of the Week. St. John's F JaKarr Sampson is Rookie of the Week.”
Sampson averaged 13.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in a 2-0 week, helping St. John’s improve to 3-3 in BIG EAST play. He scored 17 points with four rebounds in a 67-63 win against No. 20 Notre Dame and had 10 points and five boards in a 71-62 victory at DePaul. Sampson leads BIG EAST freshmen in both scoring (13.6 ppg) and rebounding (6.6 rpg) this season.

He consistently scores 12-16 points here over the last handful of BE games after his Nova debut. Super athletic, nice mid range jumper. Only going to get better. Hopefully Branch running the point also means some easy buckets for Jakar.

Carnesecca on Sampson: "He reminds me of Malik Sealy at that age. He has better outside touch, Malik could go to the rim better." #stjbb

Malik was one of the best we ever had! He almost went to Providence with Pitino as I recall (maybe Pitino left at that time)
too bad his life was cut short. As with Sampson, we were fortunate to have Malik Sealy!

He was a man among boys tonite at rutgers jumping over everyone for rebounds
Jak is gonna be a real great player has all the tools will he stay at least 2-3yrs?

Great game for Sampson. Good beginning towards his 5th Freshman of the Week honors.

At this point, based on his athelticism and potential, I'd be thrilled to have him for 2 years but think 3 years is probably too much of a stretch. Especially since he did that extra year at Brewster, age will start to become a factor in him wanting to get to the NBA.

Fantastic year thus far Jakarr. Keep up the great work.

You're right about Providence. I remember a newspaper column quoting a recruiting guru (it may have been Tom Konchalski or someone of his stature) that Malik was "Rick's kid" or words to that effect. Thank God the lure of the NBA was too much for Pitino to resist. And thank God we now have a coach who can recruit with the best of them.

First off, let me congratulate the kid on a GREAT game last night. Although admittedly I'm a selfish St. John's fan, for his own benefit he should stay at least one more year and work on his body. I thought the same of Harkless last year and I believe he is struggling with some of the bigger bodies in the NBA right now. Jakaar's talent level is off the chart, but if he doesn't put on some muscle he will get pushed around at the next level.

I don't think anyone on this roster is NBA ready right now. I think we will have the benefits of Obekpa, Branch, Harrison, and Pointer for four years. If Garrett and Christian Jones stay committed to the program, they will also be 4 year contributors. IMHO only Sampson has a chance to make it at the next level before 4 years of college service. That doesn't mean others won't try :-(

As good as Jakarr is for a freshman, he isn't nba ready. He needs strength, can't shoot behind the arc and needs more to-the-basket moves. Otto porter was fantastic last year and didn't jump to the NBA. I think Jakarr is in the same boat. Needs much more work on his game if he wants to stick in the league more than 2 years.

I agree with you. I'm just afraid that the NBA drafting on "potential", combined with the temptation of quick cash causes kids to leave rather than stay in college and develop their game. I hope Sampson decides to stay another year---for his benefit, as well as the team's.

Enjoy the award Jakarr, extremely well earned. Keep up the hard work and improving on your game. If the NBA comes calling and you are assured of a 1st round selection, so be it. Good for you.

At 5 awards, he is half way to tying the BE record for most Rookie of the Week selections.

In the meantime, let's work on that mid-to-long range jumper, and your Free Throws. Then spend some more time in the weight room.

His jump shot is taken low, in front of his face and doesn't have much of an arc, it's effective, but might present problems on the next level. Plus, as has been said, he needs to work on his free throws and just slow down his one-on-one half court moves.

I'd love to have him back next year and even beyond.

Another one. His award to lose. Not happening.

@BigEastMBB: Providence F Kadeem Batts (25 pts, 9 rebs. vs Cincinnati) is 2/11 Player of the Week; St. John's F JaKarr Sampson is Rookie of the Week.

Congrats Jakarr, but don't think for one minute you are ready for the NBA.

Great for Jakaar , not so good for SJU.

I know what you mean, but this kid isn't ready for the NBA.

Of course this is the new and nice problems we have recruiting such talented kids. We wouldn't want it any other way. Tradeoffs.
Prior to Coach Lavin we had (many not all) recruits just below D league - no offense intended on our players during this era as most played hard and up to their abilities.
